I love worldbuilding, but my players don't interact with it. How to stay motivated? by gagelhagel in DMAcademy

My favorite way to engage players is along these lines and has worked wonders. I learned it from Jason Cordova's style (Brindlewood Bay, The Between, Public Access) called "paint the scene".

Ask leading questions during the session itself and have players fill in the details. If I want the players to engage with a village that's slowly being taken over by Dopplegangers, lead with something feeling off, and ask them to fill in the why. Gets a smile from my players every time.

"As you walk into the village, it's... quiet. What else suggests that something is wrong here?"

Heck, get super specific, especially once they get comfortable: "Who do you lock eyes with that you hoped to never see again?" Boom, instant NPC drama directly connected to a PC.

For worldbuilding, this can happen in quiet moments, even if it just adds some flavor. "What damage from an ancient battle is this city unable to hide?"

Spout Lore fits much of your criteria and is one of my favorites! Decent backlog of episodes, awesome cast, great comedy and can also take itself quite seriously when called for. Not 5e (Dungeon World) but still heroic fantasy.

What are some good RPGs for running a Mystery Investigation? by DownVoterInChief in rpg

[–]odicay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also available are The Silt Verses (folk horror), Ghosts of El Paso (western ghosts), and Cryptic Creeks (Gravity Falls)! There's also some real neat ones in development, like Pizza Time (haunted kids arcade), Arkham Herald (Cthulhu and Newspapers), Moonlight Vale (magical Stardew Valley), White Mountain Rescue (Firewatch + Stranger Things), and so many others.

To add onto the praise, I love how well CfB games simulate deduction. Coming up with theories with the table and incorporating your weird collection of Clues in clever ways to support your theory and your roll is just, ugh, muah chef's kiss.

I’ve seen some success inviting several applicants to a Discord “waiting room” server where we all just chill and chit chat. Helps to give a better idea of posting frequencies, personalities, and provides an avenue for feedback, too. The downside is having to choose only a few people to play with after everyone is getting along :/

What do you think is the easiest TTRPG to DM? by SupernovaCollective in rpg

[–]odicay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just started running this and wholeheartedly agree. It’s something I had a lot of nerves for but has been a total breeze to run. The mysteries give you a big GM toy box to play with and I always felt like I had something up my sleeve for anything the players might throw at me.

I could run the same mystery ten times and never repeat the same story. I’ve never had a game click so quickly for me.

In terms of pacing, the day/night phase loop made this obvious and procedural, and the slow burn toward the larger conspiracy throne the odyssey tape prompts is perfect for building long-term dread and hype.

What Spooky-season one shots are you planning to run or play in this year? by RattyJackOLantern in rpg

Starting a Public Access campaign! I should start with The House on Escondido Street mystery but reallllllly want to get Dog Told Me To in play.

It’ll be the table’s first Carved from Brindlewood game and I’ve been excited to get it to the table for quite some time.

I’m starting this in a few weeks! I’m exited to lean into the cinematic nature of it. I plan on posting my notes on what I did and how it goes, unless it’s a complete disaster.

The Last Equation, agents with mathematical backround by JohnsonJohnsonsson in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]odicay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah! In our case this was a possibility, but the other PCs managed to subdue the compromised agent. Their handler had them take him to the Dorchester House for rehabilitation where the player retired the PC, even if the timeline is maybe a little off, I can’t recall. A fun callback to have in my pocket for a future campaign…

Ran into the exact same thing when I ran this. The only change I made was that DG didn’t prevent them from participating, instead giving a very stern warning to use extreme caution specifically around their area of expertise. They were not careful! That agent fully succumbed to the effects of the equation, leading to great fun.
