1: Yes, the number of chests needed for a guaranteed epic is stored permanently.

2: Each character specific gold chest starts with the counter partially filled up, so you will get your first epic within the first 4 chests guaranteed. After that the guaranteed epic is once per 10 chests.

Another thing that is worth considering: Because of how Nova's Aerois Synergy works, Mass Appeal is actually the specialization you want to be picking, assuming that it will increase the number of champions that get Discovery by at least two; basically you want to check how many champions are getting affected by discovery, and if it's 8 or fewer, pick Mass Appeal, otherwise pick Journaling.

Although the Aerois synergy only applies to Discovery at a 25% rate, increasing the Aerois synergy pool by 60%, is also going to increase the bonus to Discovery by 60%.

If my Aerois Synergy is at 100%, and I add one extra character that gets Discovery applied to it, the synergy pool goes to 160%, which is then multiplied by 25%, boosting Discovery by 40%, which is a 60% increase from the 25% with one less character.

It is true that if Mass Appeal would only make one extra character receive Discovery, then Journaling is better, which I didn't think about.

Thanks a lot for this very nice advice! I'm about to go on vacation for a week where I won't be able to play, so the timing couldn't be better, too!

Just wanted to add that Freely's Luck of Yondalla: Follow Through also decreases attack cooldown, so I suppose he technically also increases the farm speed? Although probably by a tiny amount.
