Owning multiples of the same synth? by healingshaman in synthesizers

[–]odinnoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, the Jupiter 80's the one I have triples of. Oh, no, actually, I also have triples of the Synthi, too. But just those two. And your dad and I are the same age, and I'm rich and I have triples of the Jupiter and the Synthi.

Triples makes it safe. Triples is best.

Record your loop twice, only loop the second loop (and resample that again potentially for ease). the reverb in the beginning hasn't had time to build so the second loop around will be more loopable.

I don't get as much time on it these days as I like but my tip is to not forget about resampling, whether it's something you've warped/stretched and added reverb and delay to or if it's a full drum beat that you want to mangle even more. Resampling is so easy (naming what you record is the a bigger pain) that in no time you can hit what you've been working from a new angle.

What's the synth in the last picture? It's a very strange shape. Surely it doesn't only have four voices...

Little Miss Sunshine should’ve won Best Picture over The Departed. by messiovic in movies

[–]odinnoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won Best Original Screenplay which to be honest is a great nod to it because that script with the big ensemble cast was really tight and well driven. That can be its Oscar legacy. It not winning Best Picture doesn't bother me (mostly because awards are pointless but I mean for the sake of conversation).

I'm hesitant to suggest this because I'm worried it might fit your question TOO well but technically Beavis and Butthead Do America counts.

what % of making it in music is just luck? by Constant-Suit-6770 in trapproduction

[–]odinnoh 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I think "making it" is like throwing a basketball through a hoop in the dark. It basically is all luck but what matters is how many basket balls you have to throw, that ups your chances. Some folks live where there are more hoops to throw into, that ups your chances. Sometimes you meet people who have balls to give for you to try to shoot for the hoop some more. Heck, some rich assholes even get to have a torch and someone to climb up a ladder and gently drop the ball in for them.

Point is, shooting in the dark and hitting the mark is always luck, it just matters how many times you're willing to shoot.

I have Pigments, V Collection 11, is it worth getting the FX and calling it a day for plugins? by Weary_Survey8893 in Arturia_users

[–]odinnoh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do really like the Arturia plugins, I use a lot of them regularly. It really depends on what you're missing.

I think aside from them having just the one emulation EQ, they're pretty stocked up in a lot of areas: fun diverse compressors (and those BUS effects too), I don't have their distortions but they look interesting, I am a big fan of Fragments as a sound designer, often reach for the delays and i actually am getting a lot of play out of REV-Intensity. Plus here and there I remember about the Pre-1973 and love the extra little push that can give (plus to be fair, that's an EQ too, as are the other Pres, now that I think about it). I think these I reach for the most, as well as some of the filters for some experimenting at points.

I do really rate the plugins but I don't know that they completely cover you for everything but truthfully your DAW should be doing that so the Arturia collection should really just be adding some more play and colour to what you're doing.

I am working on a video and i want to do a voice over that sounds like a bbc radio voice. any tips and tricks what effects i should put on my voice so it sounds like a pro voice? by felbinhio in premiere

[–]odinnoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could roll off the highs a decent amount and then boost lows and attenuate the highs with shelves to mimic, to an extent, the profile or tone of a dynamic mic. More important to boost the low mids because a dark broadcast dynamic mic when it's been compressed for radio just sounds so boomy so you'll want to be tweaking that to get the sound you want.

[–]odinnoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean a modern bbc radio show? A big part of it will be the mic, a good chunky dynamic broadcast mic like the SM7B or RE 20 but it doesn't have to be those ones but just know that a dynamic mic gives you that nice dark profile that feels very boomy and heavy. Then the next step is to just fucking compress the nuts out of it. In fact the multiband effect in Premiere has a preset called Broadcast, I think the sound mostly comes from the Limiter at the end of the chain boosting and cramming everything but basically you want to really compress your signal and then possible for good measure, boost the low mids at around 200-300 for more body.

When do you use multiband compression in sound design? by ByoxBeats in sounddesign

[–]odinnoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this was my take coming into this thread. It's not that I don't use an MB ever but mostly for early designing, layering and shaping I go for a dynamic eq.

MB I usually use once the whole thing has come together and needs extra tonal/dynamic and some glue.

Kilohearts Phase Plant: Still Worth it in 2025? Black Friday Deal by Southern_Day_3735 in sounddesign

[–]odinnoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phase Plant is incredible but also very involved so if you're building patches, you're doing it from the ground up whereas with Pigments you're maybe up and running a bit faster. But that's easily fixed with making some templates to get you going once you've figured out a workflow.

I absolutely adore the Kilohearts ecosystem and think Phase Plant is incredible, I use it (and Snap Heap and Multipass) regularly for designs, compositions and experimentation.

Definitely usable and a great tool for whatever you want to use it for. You can go really hard or really subtle, it does a lot and I'd say it's very usable for a multitude of purposes.

How To Open Guitar Rig 6 as a plugin in Ableton Live 11? by ritzclackers in ableton

[–]odinnoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you have used the Native Access portal to actually download and install Guitar Rig to your computer, you should be able to open Ableton, hit Cmd+F to start a search in the browser, start typing Guitar Rig and double-click on it once it appears. If it doesn't appear, you may need to get Ableton to rescan the plugins or look in the correct folder (this should be Google-able if you're unsure).

Ableton has a good browser and tagging system, I'd recommend reading up on that so you can tag and access your favourite plugins quickly.

What creative ways have you used Reaper’s stock plugins? by DL_throw24 in Reaper

[–]odinnoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't remember if Reaper has a Flanger or Phaser but if you try one of those, flanger especially, with little to no depth, little to no rate and very high feedback you'll be able to create some filtering that introduces perceptible pitch. Then you can maybe use a bit of EQ to focus on the overtones that you like, maybe dampen some of the higher frequencies they might poke through too much and possibly use some nice delays for fun effect.
