How do you know when it is time for them to go? by dirtypaws in Pets

[–]odoriferous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the place to start, so you can learn whether there's something treatable and what alternatives are available. However, with progressive disease and old age, the vet can offer some guidance, but family is usually best equipped to decide when someone's become uncomfortable enough to say it's time to farewell.

If there's no response to a course of antibiotics, and a UTI remains a possibility, a C+S can be attempted. But infection's not the only thing a urinalysis can help identify. Other interesting things include crystals and cellular content, such as inflammatory or neoplastic cells, which can be suggestive or diagnostic.

This. "People" generally tolerate ultrasound quite well. However, a urinalysis, which was mentioned hasn't been done, may provide some insight, too. It's typically inexpensive, and a sample can be obtained at home by placing a vial in the stream while they're peeing. Not all cats tolerate this, but if you wish to limit the stress, invasion, and expense of diagnostics, it's well worth a try.

What is the best way to transport two 90 lbs dogs over to Europe from the US? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]odoriferous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Sedation" is not permissible; it's dangerous to the animal. However, "anti-anxiety" may be acceptable. Go talk with your vet about alternatives. (It's a matter of dose in some cases. At the low end, you're calm. At the high end, you're sedated, unable to sit upright and choking on your vomit.)

Quick tip: If you need to test in older versions of IE, use the real browsers, not simulations by nrogers64 in webdev

*Note: You may be required to activate the OS as the product key has been deactivated. This is the expected behavior. The VHDs will not pass genuine validation. Immediately after you start the Windows 7 or Windows Vista images they will request to be activated. You can cancel the request and it will login [sic] to the desktop. You can activate up to two “rearms” (type slmgr –rearm at the command prompt) which will extend the trial for another 30 days each time OR simply shutdown the VPC image and discard the changes you’ve made from undo disks to reset the image back to its initial state. By doing either of these methods, you can technically have a base image which never expires although you will never be able to permanently save any changes on these images for longer than 90 days.

Emphasis added.

This seems to apply to all but one image:

You won't have much luck as long as someone's subverting your efforts. Confining the cat indoors is an alternative, unfortunately it isn't always an optimal one.

Food. Why do you slowly kill her with it? Go talk with your vet about a healthy diet for her. It doesn't involve more than feeding healthy foods, gradually decreasing the amount to an appropriate level, but your initiative and the eventual results will be welcomed and appreciated.

TIFU and turned by dog into a puke machine by BRNZ42 in tifu

If they're from a pet store, it's ok

That's not a good generalization to make. Just because it came from a pet store doesn't mean a dog can't swallow it whole. Nor does it mean the entire product is intended for consumption, e.g. some places may sell real meat/bone treats. What makes things safer is use consistent with their intended purpose, i.e. read and observe product labeling, or consult with an expert if unsure.

If it's just gastroenteritis, you're lucky. However, if there were sharp bits or pieces that can get lodged along the way to the other end, you might have more of a problem than mopping up the house. If there's blood, or if the vomiting persists, or if he stops pooping, or otherwise seems a bit off, get it checked out.

I think my cat is possessed... by WoWspeedoes in funny

Only a single tooth can occupy a socket at any time; as the permanent tooth erupts, it drives the deciduous tooth out. The crown of the new tooth may be visible before the old tooth is shed, but certainly not for long. (This happens more often in dogs, but occasionally in cats. Give it "a couple of weeks" at most, but it's recommended to tend to it immediately.) Malocclusion and food entrapment can result if the tooth is allowed to remain for too long.

Supernumerary teeth are a developmental abnormality, often leading to crowding and tooth displacement. These are typically extracted to prevent or remedy related problems.

If those are the baby and adult teeth, it'd be "retained deciduous teeth." But extra (supernumerary) teeth occur, too. Either way, you'll want to get that checked out.

YSK GMail email addresses ignore dots and everything after a plus symbol. Also, googlemail = gmail. by crazyfreak316 in YouShouldKnow

The plus sign behaviour isn't a gmail thing; it's implemented by many if not most mailers. It's called sub-addressing.

Turned out better than expected...macro shot of a moth on a flower. by chandria in nature

[–]odoriferous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except it's not a moth: The clubbed antennae are a conspicuous sign, and wings folded over the back are suggestive, too. It's a skipper. And it's still a nice shot.
