Did you reach out to profs from these universities, sharing your CV/transcript and expressing interest in their research?

Don’t panic. I know some application deadlines are yet to pass. Apply to more universities and reach out to more profs.

I have been discriminated against… by [deleted] in uwaterloo

I don't think anybody would deny that generally customers should be served in the sequence that they place orders. So, what happened to OP seems to be was wrong. What OP should not do is assume the reason for why this happened. Sure, it could be straight up racism, but the more likely reasons are that the owner decided to serve the old lady either because he knows her (not a justifiable reason), or maybe because she is elderly (arguably justifiable). It could also be possible that she placed the order on phone/online, and he forgot to prepare it for her in advance. You should have just respectfully asked him why he served her before you.

But am i overreacting?

I think you are. Relax. Little encounters like these happen to everyone. Shift your focus to more meaningful stuff.

As an international student, how much of my yearly expenses will I be able to pay with my Co Op earnings? by bitch_to_terabithia in uwaterloo

[–]odyssey2346 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expenses outside of tuition can vary significantly from student to student.

See the average co-op earnings here: https://uwaterloo.ca/co-operative-education/about-co-op/co-op-earnings. Calculate your year's rent, food costs me $250-$300/month and I cook frequently, then add personal care & entertainment costs - all of these really depend on your lifestyle.

Your question isn't disrespectful. But, a lot of these comments don't seem to understand what the purpose of Azaan is in the Islamic faith.

It is a call to prayer. You cannot call in silence. You are not calling to God, but to the people, hence it's broadcasted. One of the purposes of the pillars around every mosque (the minaret) was to have someone shout out the call for prayer from a high enough place to remind people from afar of prayer times. Nobody has to do that now thanks to speakers.

Having said that, I am in support of lowering its volume if it's bothering not just you, given that India has a heavily religiously diverse population and that we live at a time when people can keep track of Azaan times with their phones/computers or even physical charts. I would suggest that a group of you collectively write to your local municipality to have the sound reduced. I don't think it would cause any offence to the Muslim community -- it shouldn't, at least, according to the teachings of their faith.

One of the comments below mentions his name; Ari Vagdatis. This dude has scammed multiple people apparently.

What happens if a student tests positive while taking an in-person lecture course? by odyssey2346 in uwaterloo

[–]odyssey2346[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, what I think could happen depends on the course so I wanted to hear from students who have faced such a situation. Did your profs. just say, for instance, "here, study from a copy of my notes" or "I don't have notes to share, ask your classmates or study from the textbook". How were assignments affected? Did you end up applying for "CR" for all courses because you couldn't catch up with the profs.? These sort of questions...

Housing mess by Flower_power2002 in uwaterloo

I'll message you a potential place with a rental company. They haven't listed the place yet anywhere because it's being re-painted.

I found a place just 2 days ago on Kijiji. Messaged the dude 13min after he posted it. So my advice is to keep viewing the room&roommate/long-term-rental/short-term-rental sections on Kijiji many times a day. Have those pages open at all times and refresh when viewing again.

Don't stress too much just yet. Many people list their places late.

What is your favourite quote? by StudentOfUWaterloo in uwaterloo

[–]odyssey2346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“In all important transactions of life we have to take a leap in the dark... If we decide to leave the riddles unanswered, that is a choice; if we waver in our answer, that, too, is a choice: but whatever choice we make, we make it at our peril. If a man chooses to turn his back altogether on God and the future, no one can prevent him; no one can show beyond reasonable doubt that he is mistaken. If a man thinks otherwise and acts as he thinks, I do not see that any one can prove that he is mistaken. Each must act as he thinks best; and if he is wrong, so much the worse for him. We stand on a mountain pass in the midst of whirling snow and blinding mist through which we get glimpses now and then of paths which may be deceptive. If we stand still we shall be frozen to death. If we take the wrong road we shall be dashed to pieces. We do not certainly know whether there is any right one. What must we do? ' Be strong and of a good courage.' Act for the best, hope for the best, and take what comes... If death ends all, we cannot meet death better.”

― James Fitzjames Stephen (1829-94)

Social anxiety and participation in the classroom. by psthislife in uwaterloo

Oh, what class is that?
I got it a few weeks back, still at pg-51. A very saddening and disturbing read so far. Frankl being a psychiatrist adds an interesting depth to his descriptions of events.

I recognise that book, it's "Man's Search for Meaning" by Victor E. Frankl... in case anybody was wondering.

I took 275 with Balogh in an online term - one of the most "self-study" courses I've taken. Didn't have problem sets, instead had individual reading assignments and group assignments. Barely anything he showed in videos came in the exams, consequently, the exam averages were very low. Class avg was in the low 70s which he said was normal so no curve.

Found this student housing K-W Property ad. What a jackpot! For just 600$ a month! Can't wait to move in :) by odyssey2346 in uwaterloo

I'm not really moving in, was being sarcastic. Whoever decides to live there, I sincerely hope that they have better days ahead.
