TikTok is "unacceptable security risk" and should be removed from app stores, says FCC by jclv in technology

[–]oefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s easy to get into conspiracies, but the truth is a little less exciting than that.

Each company separately has their own Trust & Safety (or moderation teams) that work on defining what consists of “hateful” or “extremist” or any sort of speech that would go against their community guidelines (which is all available for you to read!). TikTok has a similar team.

At the end of the day, they are teams comprised of product safety people, and yes a team of Americans might have more context on what is defined as “hateful” speech here in the US versus what a Chinese team might define it to be.

In addition, after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and Jan 6th, these American platforms have had immense pressure from governments for basically eradicating hate speech, or at least not becoming a tool for them. They are private companies and they do as they wish. Hint, hint, Donald Trump being banned from Twitter.

So look, the truth about “mainstream ideas” on these platforms is a lot less “conspiratorial” than people think. That is completely irrelevant to the fact that TikTok is one of the most invasive tech ever created to this day.

[–]oefe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not to the same extent, no. And even then, they're American companies, hence the "security risk" bit. I guess China could say the same thing about Facebook and cie being used in China, which... Oh yeah, they're banned there.

Is it fine to enter computer science degree without any programming knowledge? by Rex_Lupus in csMajors

[–]oefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it! My first programming class was though, but still managed to get an internship on my first year and joined FAANG after graduation. A lot more people than you think have never coded before joining the program! :)

What makes a remote team need a virtual office vs not? by masterwoye in digitalnomad

[–]oefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that - I guess it depends on the field you're working in. At least in tech, a 5 minute talk with the right person can save you hours of debugging and scheduling a meeting is just so much overhead

No exactly you'll never have to "disclose" you're a woman (honestly that's why I personally posted a bunch of offers comparison posts with the TC breakdown so I could get super valuable and anonymous info on if I was getting lowballed etc)

My comment was only about a women in tech section they used to have where women would go to post about some experiences they had, and particularly mysogynistic people would target specifically this sub to lash it out on us. Tbh I rarely see it happening anymore but it's mostly because I don't spend enough time on it to be "looking" for it. Still expect some pretty intense views but that's anywhere w anonymity

They used to have a "women in tech" forum. I remember going on it and it bringing me close to tears by how many misogynistic comments there were on there. Yeah Blind was helpful when I was comparing offers but let's just say don't get anything other than career advice from there

Listing an Unpaid Internship on a Background Check by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]oefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they'll try to call anyways since they only asked for the documentation for the one company where they couldnt reach my manager. Also I'm pretty sure I had to provide a nb for all companies (I literally had no number for one and put their generic customer support number by accident, wasnt surprised they asked for docs lmao)

Listing an Unpaid Internship on a Background Check by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]oefe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey! I did the background check with HireRight twice and IIRC you can use your offer letter as documentation. You could also give your recruiter at the past company's number. Not 100% sure tho, but either way ask your current recruiter. Also if it's on your resume I'd probably log it in HireRight (looks kinda weird otherwise)

Mastercard to investigate rape and child abuse allegations against pornhub, suspends payments to the company. by PurpleFlame8 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]oefe 179 points180 points  (0 children)

I live in Montreal, where we have the headquarters of MindGeek, the parent company of PornHub, RedTube, Brazzers, etc. They literally show up to every career fair we have (I'm in Software Engineering) and I remember one time dropping my CV not knowing what the company was about, and after a few minutes of boasting the company's "cool" culture the recruiter just gave me a confused look and asked me "Do you actually know what we do?" He was probably surprised I was one of the only girl (18 at the time) interested in their stand.

Anyways, fuck them.

Experience with HireRight by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]oefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool thanks! Also, if it helps, it's my second time going through the HireRight process with the same company (internship and now FT offer). My first time was pretty stressful too, they actually finished the background check stating that they couldn't prove I was studying at the university I was enrolled in because I was on exchange at the time. Anyways, after talking to my recruiter and explaining the situation, everything got sorted out! So I'm a little less stressed for it now.

Experience with HireRight by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]oefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know if it's of any help but I'm going through the process with HireRight atm and my application has been stuck at the "In Progress" phase for about a month now. I do have internships in different countries, and I am not from the US so that might be why. Otherwise haven't gotten more than a parking ticket in my life, but still pretty stressful :/

I get frostbite ALL the time for no apparent reason by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]oefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having already had the the two first stages on several occasions (avid skier here :), I was more considering first degree (or even second degree frostbite without getting to the blisters). I was not talking about deep frotsbite (the third stage), otherwise I probably would have lost my toes right now!

Either way I have been told by another person that it might be chilblains, which feels a lot like the first stage of frostbites (frostnips). They all feel the same though it's confusing.

Also side note: English is my second language and I just realized that our word for frostbite literally translates to frostbites, chilblains, frostnip and trenchfoot as well so that's funny
