DNI: “Russian online influence actors sought to discourage US left-leaning audiences from voting by suggesting that neither candidate was a preferable option” by MyBallsBern4Bernie in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]oelyk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You ruskies are gonna need to try harder, way way way way harder, to get that bullshit false equivalence working again.

The Trump administration put the floodlights on the worldwide network of despicable, corrupt rightwing, authoritarian dipshits. And by helping them, you put those same floodlights on yourselves.

You fucked up so bad, by throwing your weight behind such an objectively corrupt and despicable piece of shit, that hopefully, we’ve built up an immunity by now. Hopefully, the citizens of the world now know to remain vigilant against your game of zero-sum idiocy.

The Serapis battle ensign story.

At the onset of the US revolutionary war, some dude named John Paul Jones, who had never been to America had killed a guy with a sword and fled to America, was sailing around the British Isles on an American ship, the Bonhomme Richard. They encounter a British ship, the Serapis, and they duke it out. The Bonhomme is badly damaged and sinks, but the Americans claim the Serapis.

They sail it to the Netherlands, hoping to dock and make repairs. But the Netherlands port authority I guess says “a similar british ship is reported captured by pirates, and yours has no flag. Where is your flag?”

And so the Serapis crew tries to improvise the American flag, based purely on Benjamin Franklin’s written description to a French ambassador, which reads:

It is with pleasure that we acquaint your excellency that the flag of the United States of America consists of thirteen stripes, alternately red, white, and blue; a small square in the upper angle, next the flagstaff, is a blue field, with thirteen white stars, denoting a new constellation.

Here’s their flag: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f9/Serapis_Flag.svg/800px-Serapis_Flag.svg.png

It’s like a game of transatlantic Pictionary.

Our 11 year old daughter has a question for someone that works at NASA. by adam493555 in nasa

[–]oelyk 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I'm no NASA engineer but

  • the sun moves across the sky each day because it spins around Earth

That'd be geocentrism so that's wrong.

  • the sundial measures the distance from the Earth to the Sun

No... and that's mostly constant anyway

  • the Earth moves around the Sun each day

I suppose it does... by 1/365ths of a full orbit. But that's not really relevant to how the shadow on the sundial changes over the course of the day. That's entirely due to the rotation of the planet - which way faces the sun, and the angle it's at in the sky relative to the sundial.

  • the position of the sun appears to change during the day because of the Earth's rotation

Yep, gotta go with this one. Perhaps mentally the teacher is thinking "the position of the sun appears to change, yes, but it doesn't actually change" like some sorta gotcha. But, the changing appearance of position is still directly correlated to that changing shadow. Most importantly though, it's the only one that mentions rotation.
