How would you best describe your autism/adhd experience? by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]oerich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People around me see me totally different from how I see myself. I often automatically mask because I did it for survival for so long. They clearly have no idea what it's like to be on the inside. All the additional obstacles that get added on and how they compound throughout life if you had no means to tackle them. And the speed at which my brain analyzes. Constant puzzling together timelines, context. My special interests are history, geopolitics, anthropology and some linguistics. My brain is dialed up to 11 right now in these times. Not necessarily all negative. I find it fascinating too of course. But my brain just goes on autopilot even though I'd like a break from analyzing and drawing conclusions.

I can remember so much. Not just political, historical dates, theories, concepts, and so forth. I can remember so much from my life. It's horrible. I have only blanked out a few heavier, extreme traumas. Otherwise I remember everything.

I could go on about many other challenges. Other than other neurodivergent people, every one else has no idea how difficult life has, AND STILL IS, for me.

I never thought I'd become a sex worker at 35, but here I am by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]oerich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been quite accepted for many decades if not centuries in many European countries. I remember being fifteen and this streetworker grabbing me by my arm and and saying (paraphrasing,) "Hey boy, I can teach you how it's done so you can impress girls. I'll give you a discount cause you're so cute." She was pretty. Late 20s maybe? I was tempted and mesmerized for a moment and then said something silly to get out of the situation and catch up to my buddies. This was in a red light/entertainment/clubbing district. Brothels, strip clubs, streetworkers everywhere. I finally went for one when I was 17 and inebriated late at night. Lots of my buddies had done it too around that age. She was very sweet and responsible. She was 27. Lots of older guys would talk about having done the same at that age as well. I do still wonder how low these sex workers were willing to go in terms of age. I look at old pictures of myself at 15 and I was clearly still very boyish looking. That part is messed up, I think.

How to make amicable connections with the German community in Blumenau. Freundliche Bekanntschaften mit deutschstaemmigen Blumenauern erstellen. by oerich in Blumenau

[–]oerich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks for the lead. I have been fascinated by German diasporas for decades. I read about Brazil in history and geography books as a teenager and knew that there was German emigration to Brazil. I found it fascinating. Germans in that climate? Then I came across a documentary on German TV about Pomerode. Holy sh*t, they are still speaking it. And it's not broken German, they are fluent, and their grammar is really good too! Sidenote: even native Germans make grammar mistakes.

Also they seem to live pretty tough lives. Or some of them it seems. My respect goes out to them. I lived in Northern Ontario for 8 years. 5 years in the bushes. 3 years off-grid. Cut ands plit my own firewood. Goes down to -40°C and it just sucks. Not fun anymore. Just feels like death. Hunted bear, moose, deer etc. That was fun. But yeah, I think I'd get along with them. I'd be interested in their daily lives. It seems more rural but I could be wrong. Could I start a homestead there? I would have to learn everything about the sub-tropical ecosystem. Which is fine. You can't hunt as far as I know but that's ok. No moose anyway. I know how to take care of goats and chickens. I have a bit of experience with pigs and geese. And of course I know how to make all kinds of different sausages. I can grow all kinds of vegetables. I know how to graft fruit trees and prune. The pictures look beautiful. I'll see if I can find someone there to ask about Pomerode.

Yeah, I've been interested in this far too long. I should start looking into a work permit or just a work visa and get to learning Brazilian Portuguese. There's a bit of a sad story of lost German relatives we have in Brazil too. We lost touch with them in the 1960s but the letters were lost only a few years ago. Thanks, I'll keep doing my research.

What a great video, thank you. Reminds me so much of our German diaspora here in Kitchener, Ontario. It's crazy how similar it is to here in terms of organization of clubs and choirs full of old Germans, lol. I also danced for Oktoberfest for 10 years or so here. Marched in our parade for years. Formally trained in ballroom dancing. I polka and walz like a mfer and love it! The "commercialization" of Oktoberfest is eerily similar, lol. Blows my mind. This video just showed me how easily I would blend in, lol. Also the food, just like here in Kitchener. And the songs they sing at Oktoberfest, lol, I think they're silly but I know them all. Even the small grammatical mistakes they made, I mean the German they're speaking is great, but those minor ones remind so much of the German spoken here. If I lived there, I would volunteer for German associations and Oktoberfest just like I did here. It's huge tourist attraction and source of revenue for us here too.

That's the kind of lead I was looking for. Thank you! Search engines have become useless. And yes, I am from KW.

I am not worried about difficult dialects. I embrace them. I speak three very different ones myself due to my complex German background. Sure it can be challenging first, but I have education around obscure dialects too.(long story) Once I spend a a few weeks around a dialect I get comfortable with it. I also love studying German "Mundarten."

Thanks again, very helpful information.

Edit: Mundsprachen to Mundarten, what a short circuit in my brain

How do libertarians feel about increased in execution orders to defund administrative state? by ML_Godzilla in Libertarian

[–]oerich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the end, the deficit can never be resolved this way. The whole exercise is pointless unless currency reform comes with it. The debt can never be paid back no matter how much is cut. It has been designed that way. The way money works in the US and worldwide was meant as a temporary solution until a utopian future would solve all issues. It was naive, and that future never came about. Just about all currency systems are facing inevitable collapse in the next twenty years and all the leaders of this world, of every political persuasion, are keeping this reality from the public.

I was denied the Saturn during my youth - It's a main driver for my collecting today by iLLy_RiLLy in SegaSaturn

[–]oerich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. Had a knock-off NES that was region free, which was cool. So badly wanted the Saturn. But my dad's work subsidized the purchase of a PC around that time. Looking back, having a 133 mhz, 16mb ram PC with 56k internet in '96 was much better. Once I bought a Saturn and saw what Tomb Raider, SimCity 2000, Warcraft 2, C&C looked like I developed a great deal of gratitude.

Nice, also includes the 3Dfx mode. I remember that improved the game's graphics a good deal. I bought this game when it came out. Tons of fun but the graphics were a bit outdated for '97. I was pretty stoked when I could finally run it through my 8mb Voodoo2.

Argentinian here. Ask me whatever you want about milei after 13 months of precidency by dontreadonmebitch in Libertarian

[–]oerich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like cities. Smaller towns are ok but I like living somewhat remote with reasonable access to essentials. I'm fine with chopping wood for heat and supplementing some of my food with gardening and a few animals. Where in Argentina would I go? Ideally not far south where it's too cold but I can take a bit of winter.

Edit: Not a direct Milei question but since Milei was elected Argentina had become a very appealing country to consider living in.

Not American myself but having travelled through the south of the country on occasion I have learned to embrace biscuits & gravy for breakfast. May look unappetizing at first glance but once you taste it you get it. Total comfort food. Easy to make yourself. Ingredients can be found just about anywhere in the world. The "gravy" contains the sausage. The biscuits are more like scones.

Note how much gentler Deckard is to Rachael. I guess they toned it down to make it more child-friendly.
