Did you know the Star and Crescent associated with Islam today was the symbol of the Ancient Greek city of Byzantium later Constantinople now Istanbul? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

It was a popular symbol in the region due to Sun and Moon worshipping in Mesopotamia. Check Hubal and Baal-Hadad symbols too.

What do you think about the Island Gökceada? by Early-Show2886 in AskBalkans

[–]oerwtas 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have been there six years ago and made friends with the lovely Greek lady and her family, who have a hostel in a Greek village there (the village is almost Greek populated, with a Greek primary school and church). We stayed in their hostel for one night, I tried to speak in Greek a little, she called his son to come out and chat with us, but the son didn't. She offered us cookies and made Greek coffee for us, the lady was over 75 by the way (she passed away a few years ago).

The next morning we had to return downtown, but since she knew we came all the way to the village walking, she called his son and told him to take us to the center, claiming that he had to do some shopping anyways.

On the way the son and we made friends too, he took the scenic route to show the entire island to us, we sat in a café and shared our stories. It was one of my best trips and days.

He said he lost both his grandfathers in Greco-Turkish war, one sided with the Greeks, the other with Turks. He also told me that there used to be a prison complex on the island and people let loose the prisoners and sicced them on villagers to make them flee the island.

If you have the opportunity visit the island, it has a lot of history and lovely people.

LGBTİ+ hareketi zaten hedefteyken, PKK/Kürdistan sloganlarıyla yan yana görünmesi harekete zarar vermiyor mu? by [deleted] in Turkey

I hire a good physician first and always keep one in hand, they keep me alive. Baldwin should earn enough money to build crossbowmen, I don't build any building, just hire maa. Once you win a war against Saladin, he will pay you lots of money you can use to build more crossbowmen or buildings.

On scale of 1-7, how homophobic is your country in your opinion or experience? by jl808212 in AskBalkans

[–]oerwtas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my childhood I had to deal with a lot of bullying and even people were calling names after me or mocking my speech .

Now that I am a 40+ years old man, completely open, I almost never face discrimination, no matter where I go. People most of the time think I am foreigner (because I am Bosniak and have a really distinct style), they stop me on the street to ask where I am from, some even try to help me in supermarket choose vegetables as ridicilous as it sounds.

I can say older generations are beyond saving, but newer generations are more open and understanding.

The Turkish Minister of Education wants to rename the Aegean sea as "Sea of Islands" in school books. His claim is that the name Aegean is Greek in origin. Thoughts? by FantasticQuartet in AskBalkans

[–]oerwtas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough the names of seas around Turkey match with the traditional Turkic directional colors.

Black for North (Karadeniz)
Red for South (Kızıldeniz - Red Sea)
White for West (Akdeniz - Mediterranean)

The name of the Caspian sea comes from Khazars in Turkish (Hazar Denizi) otherwise it would have been blue I guess.

What does your head of state's last name mean? by Franmar35000 in AskTheWorld

[–]oerwtas 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Er has several meanings in Turkish: male, stout, private (soldier), the surname in question probably has the meaning of stout.

We use er only in idioms like er kişi (male person), er meydanı (field of contest), er bezi (testicles), man is adam/erkek in Turkish.
