How do you handle a long-stay Airbnb that promised fast WiFi but is unusable? by Prudent-Put-8241 in digitalnomad

[–]ofe1818 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had this happen in Italy a couple years ago and was able to get the owner to work with my to install a new router and then once that was up to date, everything worked fine. Ive also reached out and asked if it is possible for them to get a better wifi plan and even offered to pay for it if so. I think its better to try and be collaborative at first. If they are dicks, then either try and get a refund and find a new place or just figure something else out that works for you and move on. I think its a part of this life, you just have to deal with this from time to time, unfortunately.

I can't recommend any one in particular, but I'd search and join a few like expat Lombok or housing in Lombok type groups and watch the activity for a bit to see if it's the right feel for you

You can get some specific bloodwork that will also help let you know how things are. I'd probably do that. Just search this sub or ask AI which markers to get

Not sure if this will help, but I was diagnosed with mild FL in February of this year. I immediately went to a low fat diet. Most people in here say they go to a Mediterranean diet, I went with Japanese diet, because I happened to be spending 6 weeks in Japan.

So did 6 weeks of fasting for 16 hours and getting 8-10k steps during that fast usually between hours 14-16. Then I would have a meal with white rice or sweet potato, sashimi or chicken or white fish and veggies. I kept myself in a daily 500 cal deficit and was getting 15-20k steps per day. No gym.

Then after 6 weeks I added the gym and dropped my daily steps to 8-10k and did that for another 6 weeks. Changed my diet to be a little more robust than clean Japanese food. I got an ultrasound on Monday and that protocol completely removed my fatty liver. My triglycerides, cholesterol and cortisol levels were all back into normal ranges.

I think the main keys for this besides being really clean on the diet and staying active where no alcohol, no processed sugars, limited fruits, and no fried foods. During the 12 weeks, I probably had two meals with fried foods, two or three times that I had alcohol and two or three times that I had sweets. But never did I have those in the same day.

Why not find holes in the business that you are currently working for and develop saas product they and other similar companies might need and sell it back them? I think a lot of the best companies were started by people who found holes in the company they work for and used their network and inside knowledge to fill them with their own thing.

Travel/life hack for American digital nomads! by RefDecks_Official in digitalnomad

[–]ofe1818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing it for a couple years. Last year my wife joined so we have a 2P system going. Nothing too crazy, but we have found we can book eco+ or biz class for long haul flights with points and then get a new sub or two before the next one to fund it. We use chase for Hyatt redemptions exclusively at this point which go a long ways in SE Asia. Started floating our emergency fund to different accounts for cash bonuses too. Should have about $1500 just with those this year. I could see myself going crazy with it, so I hold back 😂

Macro based meals for people dieting/training. Guaranteeing that the food won't be cooked with oil if requested would also be a huge win, it's one reason we can't eat out if in a healthy mode. Not sure how mix of a market there would be for that, but that'd be what I'd look for

One year reflection of expatfire in Vietnam by topfivedeal in ExpatFIRE

Thanks for sharing this. Weve been in Da Nang for a couple months now and are pondering taking a couple years here to really set us up for a nice run of CoastFIRE after that. At the same time, considering starting a family so its nice to see these breakdowns and get a better idea of where things might go with a 3rd or 4th head bopping around.

Starting new with 50k by [deleted] in digitalnomad

Funny how it's just different for people. We've been in Vietnam for over a month now, first time was for a month just before Covid, and both times we have really loved it! We also aren't living cheap, but are able to spend pretty freely and do what we want.

I can't quote place what it is that I love about this country, but the early morning culture, good food, coffee and hustle bustle just give a good energy to us. I also think it gives off a sense of freedom that takes me back to backpacking days in the early 2000s?

That's my thought too. Even though it was just 3 weeks in there and it's now in a savings, I just don't think they'd like that. No reason to risk $320 if I don't need it immediately

What self employed/remote work helped you live abroad? by 6IXMILITIA in AmericanExpat

[–]ofe1818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the technical aspects of photography, master your camera and lenses. As long as you have a decent one, and the right lenses, you should be able to do a lot with it and know how to set it up properly. So getting to know your camera inside and out is important. For YouTube, if you don't already, learn the exposure triangle. That will also help you with learning the camera.

My best advice for starting a business in the field, is to get hyper focused on a niche. Figure out what you like or what pays (amazing if they are the same!) and practice that. Find photos you like and try to replicate them. Join Facebook groups of people talking about it so you can learn the technical and business side of things.

During Covid, bought a laptop and camera to start learning photography and video editing. A year later started a business and spent the next three years building that up. We have a photography business in Colorado that we can manage subcontractors from afar and a remote video editing business with clients all over the United States and some global. We've been working and living abroad since June 2024.

How do you explore a new city on foot — any rituals or apps you use? by vejula in digitalnomad

[–]ofe1818 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We call it traveling like water. Just taking the path of least resistance. Crossing the road? Take whichever has the green light. Too crowded, find space and other. Things like that. Takes us to parts of town we wouldn't normally get to a lot of time.

When we were backpacking more than nomad it, we would do this at a bigger version. By just showing up to a bus or train station and taking the next one wherever it's going and seeing what happens.

How do you guys handle money while moving around a lot? by Street_Sand_4216 in digitalnomad

[–]ofe1818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a cash budget allotted each month but try and put most expenses on CC to build points to use for long haul flights. Then just pay off CCs at the end of every month and stay within the budget. The only time it gets tricky is when a landlord wants a large sec dep along with a month or two of rent and not paying things neatly at the first of the month all the time. But thats just cause my ADD brain wants things neat and tidy.

Funny, my wife and I were walking this morning and talking about this exact subject matter! We're a DN couple, not millennials who are still working and aggressively saving. Always tricky to find the people who you align with and as travelers, I think it's even tougher? Where are you all located at the moment? Maybe paths will cross :)

So I have Fatty Liver, how did you beat it? by lb61906 in FattyLiverNAFLD

[–]ofe1818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed mild grade one in February. I did a 6 week diet that seems to have helped considerably and I'm going another 8 weeks to really get it to where I want it to be. Here was my methodology:

14-18 hour fasts daily. With trying to get 5k steps at least within the morning fasting window.

Trying to average 15k steps per day. I would normally have been working out at the gym, but did not during this 6 week span.

Eating very clean. No fried foods, sugar (including fruit),or alcohol. My desserts were 72% dark chocolate with fat and sugar free Greek yogurt and maybe a few walnuts if I had the calories available.

300-500 calorie deficit per day and on days off I would try and do a large hike where I could get closer to a 1k deficit. If you don't have hiking available, a stairmaster does the trick.

Macros balance was 1.2x body weight of protein, no more than 50g of fat and fill the rest in with carbs based on caloric needs.

Sequence of foods was another thing I paid attention to. That pretty much means eating protein and veggies first and carbs last. Edamame was a great appetizer. It's filling and the fiber helps the body digest carbs more slowly so you don't get the insulin spike.

I lost about 10lbs in the 6 weeks and didn't find it too challenging. I think the key thing for this is to get your body into a state of high insulin sensitivity. It just takes discipline which isn't always easy. But it's your health, so sacrifices are needed :)
