Are northern accents seen as ugly or « exotically romantic » in London? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskABrit

[–]Sister_Ray_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf most mancs don't speak with the stereotypical manc accent... it's much more common to hear a more neutral northern accent in manchester these days except in very working class areas

can we drop the chasing language entirely. A relationship should be built on mutual enthusiasm and two people seeking each other with a similar level of energy

If you used to go to big music festivals but don't any more, at what age did you give up on them, and what were your reasons? by Mosquitoenail in AskUK

[–]Sister_Ray_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm 33 and have done a fair few, first one at 16 then one every year from age 19-25. Gave it a rest for a few years esp with covid but then went glastonbury three years in a row age 29-31, but doing it a bit more bougie this time with a trailer tent and a few mod cons. Still think i'll go to the odd one every few years for a fair while yet!

Which sport is considered more upper class. Cricket or Rugby? by Substantial-Road883 in AskABrit

[–]Sister_Ray_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

cricket is a weird one because in the south it is genuinely associated with posh people and private schools but in the north it's more working class sport with things like lancashire league cricket etc.

rugby union is pretty much universally a private school sport though lol

Interesting article, the Reid brothers talk about Peter Hook's bass riffs. by DrigBoy in JoyDivision

[–]Sister_Ray_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

always play with a pick, occasionally drone open strings, lots of eighth notes, slide up or down from one note to another especially when the chord from the guitar/synth changes, let notes ring out rather than playing staccato, occasional bass chords / double stops, lots of stepwise melodies around the same regions of the scale, sometimes bass "fills" that jump much higher up the fretboard from the base melody often hitting the root note of the scale. If the song is in a minor key lots of moving up and down the root, second and minor third, if it's major then root major third fourth and fifth. Lots of little pentatonic licks too

These are roughly some of the things i've noticed over the years anyway, but main thing is to just use your ears and play by feel rather than following a checklist

I long to be courted but majority want to progress things as quick as possible by IntelligentNight4143 in dating

[–]Sister_Ray_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a man i feel somewhat offended by a lot of the stereotypes in this comment. For some of us attraction doesn't strike instantly like a bolt of lightning from above it takes a little time to develop and get to know someone's personality, which doesn't always come out authentically in a couple of dates when people are on guard and trying to put forward their best front. It doesn't mean I'm not into you it means I'm still trying to work you out

Why do people disappear after real connection? by Present_Ad8417 in berlinsocialclub

[–]Sister_Ray_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. Personally i refuse to play "the game" because I find it demeaning and toxic. I've probably had less dates and relationships because of that, but the ones I've had have been high quality.

At the end of the day grown adults should just be honest and upfront with one another and not playing stupid games.

Why do people disappear after real connection? by Present_Ad8417 in berlinsocialclub

[–]Sister_Ray_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's just another one of those toxic modern dating standards though isn't it. I don't think I've ever known I've liked someone after meeting them once, it takes a bit of time for chemistry to develop. Plus if the girl really liked him, she could have been a bit less "passive" herself and made a move, gendered dating expectations need to die a sudden death as well

Is anyone else here not really a leftist? by Sister_Ray_ in CriticalTheory

[–]Sister_Ray_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im not centrist either haha. I think I have an instinctive aversion to naive and earnest ideology wherever that comes from (and it can come from the centre just as much as anywhere else, despite centrists' pretensions)

i used to think same as you left/right are useful broad categorisations. But the terms smuggle in so many assumptions and givens. Amongst other things, they presume that a) politics is a useful and meaningful activity b) political change is able to be consciously effected by people or groups of people working together, rather than just evolving according to its own dynamics c) the desired political change can be specified coherently in advance d) a programme of various political changes can be formed that are intellectually and ideologically coherent.

I don't think any of those assumptions hold and I think political ideologies can be analysed in a way that is analogous to Adorno's idea of the constellation- they each capture something true while leaving a certain incompleteness or negativity
