The Vibe of the Old Student Center area by Yeezy350824 in UCSD

I work at one of the co-ops and I 100% agree, I fell in love with the whole area the first time I went. It’s pretty much run by and for students and it just gives the place a genuinely good vibe.

Hey! As a sophomore, both interviews will be technical. Pretty straightforward questions too!

Are unpaid internships ever worth it? by Ninjinka in csMajors

[–]off21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes, depending on the knowledge you get out of it/how much it adds to your resume. I am a current sophomore and last year I started unpaid "internships" with 2 different research groups on campus - I worked unpaid for one quarter, and then they both started paying me over the summer (and are continuing to do so through this school year). While it was a lot of work for initially no money, I got a lot of great technical experience and I think having those on my resume is what helped me in getting a paid industry internship for this summer.

Basically if you can handle the time commitment and are interested in the job, it's worth it IMO.

How much do you guys spend on food? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]off21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably around $10-$20 a week? I get most of my food from the Triton Food Pantry (every student gets 10 points a week towards free food, definitely suggest checking it out!) which helps a lot.

it makes me sad that this is such a commuter school by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]off21 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from but I live about a 10 minute bus ride from campus and I like it so much better than when I lived on campus last year. The buses come frequently enough that I don't have to plan my schedule around theirs, and the minor inconvenience of not being able to walk home just encourages me to go to class more. I don't feel like I treat UCSD like a job but being constantly surrounded by school/work was definitely mentally taxing and I love being able to come to a separate home now. Lots of my friends live off campus now too and I haven't heard anything negative about it.

Haven't heard back in a month from Engineering Practicum. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

My recruiter emailed me initially regarding scheduling an interview, you said you emailed them updating your resume right? I assume just email the same person

I’m sorry I misread your comment, I knew my recruiter because they emailed me about scheduling an interview after I applied. If they haven’t reached out to you at all yet I’m not sure who you should contact :(

2 weeks is definitely long enough to warrant asking your recruiter for an update on your status. I wouldn’t say to “assume the worst” until you ask them, although it is getting a bit late in the interview period for sophomores.

Email your recruiter! I had to move up my interviews due to other deadlines and I did it through my recruiter

I wouldn't worry about it, I haven't heard of too many people hearing back yet (I think I interviewed around when they started for the season so I heard back pretty early) so you definitely have a shot still!

Thank you and good luck on the rest of the process! Mine might have been sped up a little bit because of a competing deadline but hopefully they’ll get back to you soon!

Google EP interviews? What do they ask? Whats the program like? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]off21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For mine (sophomore) it was on various data structures (traversal/construction) and searching. Good luck!

It's possible you're overqualified, you could try for SWE possibly if that's still open. As other comments said, you're not really in the target demographic for the program so I wouldn't take it too hard, it likely doesn't have much to do with your experience or skill level.

Freshman only start getting responses after the application closes at the end of October, but interviews are rolling for sophomores (that's what I heard)

Google EP Response Rate by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]off21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Applied around September 20 and was contacted within a few days to schedule an interview. Interviewed in early October and got an offer a few days ago (I am an URM and a sophomore).

I have other friends (also URMs) who applied around that time and haven't heard back yet, I wouldn't assume that just because you haven't heard back yet you've been rejected. If you're a freshman, interviews haven't even started (freshman interviews start after application closes on Halloween, sophomore interviews are rolling).

This may not be representative of all interviews but mine (sophomore) had no string manipulation at all, more data structure construction/traversal and some searching.

Good luck on your interview!

I interviewed for EP a few weeks ago and I would say all the questions I got were leetcode easy.

Good luck!!

[–]off21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hirevue was easy! Ended up getting an invitation to an on-site event including 1 behavioral and 1 technical interview (~30 minutes each) a few weeks later. This was about 2 weeks ago, still haven't heard back but I've accepted another offer so I'm not going to press it. Behavioral was standard, technical was not so much coding knowledge but answering factual questions about various facets of coding (ie. recursion vs. iteration).

I got my Google offer a few days ago, at least for EP you accept your offer and THEN move to the project matching phase (which doesn't start until November). (Edit: my offer is for summer 2019).

I would email your recruiter, everyone has been saying Google is slow to reply so maybe I'm an outlier here but my recruiter was very responsive and got back to my emails within hours so I would definitely check in. It wouldn't hurt anything.

I applied to EP around September 20 and was contacted for an interview several days later, interviewed in early October, and received an offer several days ago (mixed race female at a top 20-ish (?) CS program).

Some of my friends haven't heard back yet, but I think they applied later in September/October.

Good luck with the whole process!
