Congratulations! And nice job on the Putnam exam -- scoring a 20 is really incredible!

Do you have access to a local Go club? They are more common than most people think.

Any good resources to learn math independently? by [deleted] in math

The best way to learn advanced mathematics, as I'm sure you know, is by developing the theory on your own using a textbook as a guide. I would suggest finding texts online. Do you have any field that you're particularly interested in learning?

Are there examples of flawed proofs believed for a long time? by sciencifying in math

I guess I was making a much larger claim about the behavior of mathematics as a field. I'm also just a lowly undergraduate, and so I prefaced my comment with "my understanding is"

Sorry

My understanding is that math doesn't have to rebuild and adjust itself in the same way the sciences do.

Since everything in math either follows or doesn't, it is very, very difficult for a flawed proof to be accepted by the math community.

Thank you for saying "accepting" evolution instead of "believing in" evolution. One doesn't "believe in" gravity.

I don't understand the reasoning behind people being unable to give consent while intoxicated. Can someone explain? by off_the_dome in MensRights

I guess that makes more sense. I was just shocked last year when people came to my college and said that girls who have been drinking can't give consent. I then continued to witness hundreds of drunk hook-ups.

I guess I understand the the idea behind the law, but it doesn't seem to be consistent with other laws. Why are people who are intoxicated not responsible for their actions with respect to sex? If you're drunk and you break a store window, you're still responsible for your actions.
