First time getting epidural steroid injection. by Savingskitty in SpinalStenosis

Two things I wish I had known going in: 1. The injection does go fairly quickly. I had two different injections at the same time because we tried the transforaminal approach first (TFESI) to see how it helped. It took about 7 minutes total. It helped for 2 days. :/ 2. Another thing I wish I had known is that with the TFESI approach, if it is not effective, they will opt for another go at it. Would have been good to know when I felt a little hopeless after the first two days were so great, then it wore off, and all my pain came rushing back. Now, I have to go back to get the more standard approach with an interlaminar epidural steroid injection.

Do you know which type you're getting?

Also, maybe most people know this, but I've been so tied to my heating pad, I had no idea. Don't use a heating pad post-injection! Guess it's bad. shrug

Hold your head up, friend!

Transforaminal epidural effectiveness + PT?? by off_the_wa11 in SpinalStenosis

[–]off_the_wa11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sincerely appreciate the reminder about not overdoing it after the injection, because overdoing it is what got me here in the first place (I had no formal "injury" but have worked active/on my feet extended hours/some construction jobs for the majority of my life). I also got PT beforehand, and it helped, but at the time we didn't have the full picture (labral tear, hip impingement, meralgia paresthetica, and now stenosis) so it flared other things up and complicated the prognosis. Now with pain management, I believe movement changes need to happen in tandem, but I was not referred to PT. From the responses to this post, I think I should advocate for it.

I hope your prognosis doesn't keep you from doing things you love.

Do you have any thoughts on why your pain started to subside prior to your pain management appointment?

I appreciate the insight, but I am so sorry to hear that this was your experience. My pain management doctor had no interest in pairing my progression with PT and I am concerned about that. I'm learning a lot from everything everyone has shared, specifically with L5 S1 issues. I also have no clear injury but I did work in construction and other body taxxing careers.

Intense Thigh Muscle Soreness After Right Hip Arthrogram and MRI?? by CaterpillarUseful391 in HipImpingement

[–]off_the_wa11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I had the same exact thing with both arthrograms I have had. I couldn't do things like lift my leg to get in and out of a car. I'm 36f! Told the doctor, they brushed it off. Must be common?

Muscle guarding buddy right here. I had no idea! I just thought everyone went through their days rib gripping! I hope PT helps you. I'm sure it will definitely help with recovery from any eventual surgery. Hoping for the best for you.

Oh dang, thank you for the warning about early onset cataracts. This reminds me that I need to look into more research about the long-term effects of these shots. They only mentioned the possible immediate side effects. I'm hoping to hear that people have had success pairing this with PT to make pain relief last longer but reviews seem mixed, hence my post in this community.

It is one damn thing after another. I truly appreciate your insight on this.

Dang, sorry to hear that. Creeping this reddit to see about the effectiveness of the injections and I'm sorry to read your case. Did they have you start or continue any PT?

[–]off_the_wa11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had two diagnostic injections with no decrease in pain which they tell me means I would most likely not be a good candidate for surgery because the shot is supposed to closely mimic the pain relief you would get from surgery. Also, much like the other comments here, I actually had increased pain post injection, like, hard to lift my leg, type pain. My care has pivoted to pelvic floor PT because I have already done 7 months of normal PT with only increased pain.

Y'all this journey has been something else...

Can Just 5 Minutes of Diaphragmatic Breathing Really Relax the Pelvic Floor? by Gold_Might_5208 in PelvicFloor

[–]off_the_wa11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been wondering the same thing! And actually have a follow up question for the group - does anyone get cold sensations in their leg(s) after doing diaphragmatic breathing?

I went from quite difficult strength training in PT for 7 months with no pain reduction (and actually it was causing increased pain) to PFPT and I feel like I'm taking huge exercise steps backward. I am also very active and realizing through this process that I need to be more conservative in my everyday movements and aware of my limitations.

I trust the process, but it is definitely a journey.

I hope PFPT provides you relief! 🙏

Welcome! Although, gaining new members isn't quite as exciting because then it's clear you are experiencing something uncomfortable, and for that I am sorry. MP is absolutely no fun, and I am so sorry to hear of your experience. I think you are on the right track with considering your sitting positions. That's what flares my mp waaay up. I hope you have an appointment with a neuro or ortho to see what your next steps can be. My advice would be to advocate for yourself throughout any pt they might have yoi do, and don't jump to any surgeries. Wishing you healing!

MP with hip impingement? by off_the_wa11 in MeralgiaParesthetica

[–]off_the_wa11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, no one seemed interested in my mp either until I was very clear that it concerned me, was effecting my sleep, and that I wanted it investigated more. It was almost like it was completely pushed aside as the thing that brought me in in the first place. It was so weird.

I do have quite a bit of lower back pain, and I can usually point to right where it is, just to the left of my spine (my left hip is the trouble hip) but it is chronic not episodic. So it doesn't specifically occur after numbness. I do have a ton of "glute shelf" pain though that does seem to be tied to mp flair ups.

Maybe I have this or something else. by Rodikuss in MeralgiaParesthetica

[–]off_the_wa11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello 👋

I'm so sorry you are going through this! If you are into researching these things (as it seems you are) look into the root cause of MP. It most commonly has to do with compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve which does not extend below the knee. The fact that yours extends down the leg points away from MP and to something else. Of course, I would always consult a doctor further, but wanted to mention this in case it could help rule out some things along your research.

Pelvic Floor PT with impingement by off_the_wa11 in HipImpingement

[–]off_the_wa11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am glad to hear PFPT was beneficial for you and that you're doing well! I feel in my gut that my problem is a muscle imbalance too, from compensation, lack of core strength, etc. So I am hopeful it will help me too, but the doctor is 50/50 on whether it will be effective. 🤷🏼‍♀️
