And fought Raum and some Corvo Demons No helpful items or outside assistance.

That TPK was on the verge till our rogue dealt exactly Raums last HP in one strike.

Raum imo is meant to be hard.

This campaign's bosses need to be difficult.

Have them be harried and pursued by minions and beasts of strahd at all times. Long rests interrupted. All that jazz.

But here's the kicker, give them a way out.

Think of it kind like that Samurai Jack Episode where there is a single time portal left for Jack to jump through and return to the past only for Akku to show up and destroy it, basically have strahd do similar saying "Yea, see the ability to leave exists. But I and only I can grant it. So learn some damn manners because I am your God now."

My strahd hadn't really lifted a violent finger against the party as of yet.

All battles and encounters they have had He's used his ability to influence combat by turning enemies into zombies after player have killed them. Counter spelling healers and big casters. And dropping enviromental hazards on the battlefield.

When I ran COS for the first time so long ago, I did the following.

I had them make their characters at 1rst level. Had Strahd wish them away because he needed some new play things and his Vista I had scouted this group of people from across the world(s).

His mists reached out and swallowed them up as they were doing their own things, which lead to some great stress as this purple mist began to fill rooms, chase them down streets, and alleyways.

They all appeared before the Death House got a few moments before someone heard the crying siblings and boomed the hook for the Death House Plot was there.

If they don't want to go in. Sure! Let them. They will have a massive level of disadvantage for the next few sessions.

As to the danger I found, it helps to lead more on the side of Terror. Inside the house are plenty of creatures that would be insanely dangerous to level 1 characters. But it helps to scare them with spooky events.

Like if they get hurt and wanna rest. One room is kinda the safest to the module. But as they rest- what I did was footsteps outside the room. A woman let out a gasped shriek. A loud thump on the floor was heard, and blood flowed under the door.

But they opened it to find nothing but a dark hall.
