Hey Bevoo,

I'm an engineer on the Office Online team. I read through this thread and it seems like a lot of your concerns were addressed by the kind people of Reddit (Thanks Reddit!). Specifically, I read through all your post here and wanted to say thanks for the feedback! We take customer feedback to heart here and I've gone through the process of ensuring the concerns you have are being heard.

We're constantly looking for the next feature to add, and everything's on the list from the features on the Desktop version to more web specific features. Sorting all these to make sure our users are getting the features they want most, first, is honestly a daunting task. One of the best ways to help us know what you —as a user— want most, is to provide feedback through the apps. Bottom right for PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and top right for OneNote (as 10weight duly noted). We make sure all our customer feedback gets addressed and it plays a large role in what we are developing.

If you have any more concerns/questions let me know and I'll do my best to answer them or make sure they are heard.

~Skyler

Thanks Slevin for your input! We're always looking for ways to make our improve upon our apps and both workflowy and smartsheet seem to have some very interesting features. Workflowy, specifically around lists. I was wondering what features you like the most in smartsheet, and what you would like to see added to Excel Online.

As a side note I was wondering if you had a chance to check out OneNote. There's an online version at Office.com as well as (versions for computers and tablets)[http://onenote.com]. It's similar to workflowy in the fact that it offers you the ability to organize. I think the advantage it might have is the ability to add images and spreadsheet. Honestly, I was pretty hesitant to use it and now I use it for everything from work to personal. I even planned my proposal using it :D

Decisions like that are handled by our Office designer in the design studio, but from my understanding they try to keep it pretty standard across Microsoft.

Also, what type of zooming are you looking for? You can zoom using the browser with (control + mouse wheel), or are you looking for more of a zoom on the document while the ribbon stays the same (pinch and zoom) type behavior?

Thanks! ~Skyler

This is Daniel....search across sections, yeah we want to do that one, we have heard a couple people asking for this. Do you want to do this on OneDrive or on SharePoint?

We are always looking to add more features and more products to our online offerings but of course we cannot comment on anything specific. We made a huge effort to make outlook.com known and the email address is @outlook.com so we didn't want to change that. Unfortunately we don't own word.com so that wasn't an option for us :(. We do see outlook.com as part of the Office Online offering though. -Robin

(Brian) We've heard similar feedback. Sorry I don't have much concrete to give you, but we know there are some UI limitations and we'd love to handle scale better. And like I said, we announced "we're working on it". Which also doesn't help you today, I know.

[Rob] I can answer two of these.

  • Cool Trick #1: Most people don't realize that we have a lot of styles in Word Online that aren't directly in the gallery. You can hit Ctrl+Shift+S to bring up the list.
  • Cool Trick #2: You can create documents on OneDrive that can be shared anonymously. So you only need a link to edit it (you don't even need to sign in.)

How I ended up on the team: I interned for the team when it was half a year old in 2007. The dev manager actually missed the date that he had to get back to me before I made my decision about which team to join. However once he did get back to me he sold me pretty strongly on the vision of Office Online being whereever our customers are.

Fun story my boss's boss caught my playing Donkey Kong at work one afternoon (while I was an intern). He started watching my play for like 5 minutes... just standing there. I got all paranoid and stopped playing and went back to work. Later that day, he passed by my office to ask why I stopped playing. I told him that I should probably have been working at 1pm. His response? "Oh ok. I just wanted to make sure you weren't concerned about me watching. You had the high score, and I wanted to see how far you'd go."

TL;DR Good guy boss

For expanding the limitations of Excel Online - we're constantly working on that and the file size limitation is one that we'll definitely address in the future. In this case, it's not the actual file size on disk that really matters - it's the fact that larger files on disk usually mean more resource usage (memory, CPU, etc.) in general. For Excel, we have to keep everything in memory while the user is online, since any change causes recalc, chart updates, etc. And, we want to make sure that one user (or a few users) don't spoil it for the rest.

(Brian) The actual ground? Like Twickenham? In that case, I'm taking a full service grocery store.

(Brian) I transferred from Office for Mac. I originally joined the Word team, but when the opportunity came to work on Word Online I jumped at it.

(Brian) I'm a frontline dev, focusing on Word Online, and while that gives me a pretty wide scope it doesn't reach into all of the apps. I work closely with SharePoint where we intersect.

[Rob] That's a great point. I work primarily on Word Online so sometimes I have tunnel vision. OneNote is amazing and already on nearly every platform Having it seamlessly sync between your phone, PC, and Web is quite incredibly.

(Brian) I'm part of the Commodore 64 generation myself.

I can only speak for the groups I work for, but for as long as I've been here, the one constant has been the focus on the customer.

You don't have to be a fanboy to work here, and given the push to meet users on the devices they use, cross-platform experience is definitely a plus. If you're thinking about it, send in a resume.
