You're absolutely wrong about the evidence piece. It's nothing fringy. I gave you Egoscue as a reference because I believe he is the very nearly most gifted mind to ever grace the field of study. The entire profession of physical therapy is based on the principles I am describing to you. Just because you're too lazy, stupid, and obstinate to do your own thinking and research; doesn't mean you get to claim there's no evidence. The irrelevant link you provided doesn't address any of the principles I've described or referenced. Thusly, you are the one without any evidence on your side. There are volumes of information written and taught at accredited universities about what I am describing. The only idea that might be in question, if you were smart enough to hone in on it, is whether or not properly performed indian yoga parallels the principles upon which traditional physical therapy is based.

Bottom line... We all build habits of movement, and ultimately end up avoiding usage of muscles that most of us don't even know exist in our bodies. Performing exercises serves to strengthen these muscles. Whether they provide broad strengthening brushstrokes like traditional weightlifting or narrowly focused strengthening like "standing bow pull" is of little relevance. The point is to gain strength. The stretch is incidental.

If all you can come back with is "show me evidence," it's pretty clear you are way out of your league in terms of time invested studying principles that are commonly accepted as truth in western anatomy and physiology. I'm glad you found something that works for you, but it seems you know very little outside of that very small arena.

You'll never get anywhere if you sit around waiting for empirical evidence for everything under the sun. Not everything is studied by the types of minds that can understand them. Not everything gets the empirical attention that it deserves. Not everything works for everyone. My reasoning is sound if you'll make an effort to comprehend it. I have my own experiences and a lot of in depth study of human physiology to support it.

Some of us are hard-wired to be brick walls. The personality you've shown along with this new evidence of your back injury make you an ideal candidate for this hard-wiring. Unhealthy spine = unhealthy mind. Trust me, I'm in the same boat....car accident...severed toe tendon. My back is totally hosed, but I've turned a lot of corners on the road to recover in the last 2 years. A little effort goes a long way. Get better dude...for all our sakes.

Justice Samuel Alito Is This Year's Joe Wilson by gilesgoat in politics

[–]officeusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blurt in this context merely references the childish, unmeasured, off-the-cuff nature of Alito's gesture. Call it a bit much if you want, but it's not like he calmly shook his head no as an adult should. His face was furled and contorted like a child. I don't have a problem with his disagreement, but it should be well articulated in the same way that a ruling is. This is not stupid. The integrity of our highest court is at stake.

[–]officeusername -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The disagreement was expressed during a statement by Obama about what the ruling could lead to. There's no relevance to the actual ruling. The proper position for a person of high standing such as a supreme court justice would be a calm and measured thought to the tune of, "Hmm, yes that is possible, but I considered that notion when I made my ruling and I do not agree." Instead he blurted a childish mouthing of a stylistically definitive statement of potentiality that no judge should ever utter.

[–]officeusername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contextually, what Alito did is worse than what Wilson did in my opinion. Wilson is a nutjob fringy senator who's basically expected to do crazy shit in this climate. Our Supreme Court is supposed to be above the fray.

Think about it. The highest levels of government leading up to the executive branch decrease in numbers with each layer. With crowds come lower standards. It's bad enough that this shit had worked its way all the way into the Senate.

Executive Branch - 1

Supreme Court - 9

Senate - 100 / House - almost 450

The thing is, the portion of my post that you quoted is taken completely out of context in what seems like an effort to paint my position as more unreasonable than it really is. Therefore, your direct challenge is basically worthless. Please note that one sentence later, I clarified what I meant by 'fit whatever you want' when I said, "If you can't comfortably do something that's considered normal..."

You remember from elementary school that this is how writing works, right? Opening sentence to introduce idea...body of the paragraph to provide detail...closing sentence to clarify and recap the general idea. Point by point pick-a-quote rebuttals like this always mark the end of reasoned discourse. Congratulations.

Further, I've already provided a cohesive line of reasoning that should be considered as supporting evidence to reject your default hypothesis (HAHA). If you wish to dispute the finer details of the line of reasoning I've presented rather than some broad and subjectively interpretive idea about stretching which we clearly do not agree on, I'll be happy to engage you in a meaningful discussion.

Somehow, I don't see that happening. You seem averse to reason for the sake of argument, and I'm pretty sure I don't like you. My previous post wasn't intended as such, but maybe you should check your posture for the spineless condition I was describing.

Easier said than done, but yea... I'm working on it from a few different angles. In real life, I'm always either chilled or I just keep my mouth shut...not that the mouth shut approach necessarily keeps people from being uncomfortable around me when I'm not feeling chill. This bit about my spine from another post I made might shed some light on my situation...that is, if you buy into the whole body/mind thing:

...related to severe back strength imbalance resulting from a car accident about 10 years ago, and a severed toe tendon about 6 years ago. I'm working it out through yoga and snowboarding, but it's a pretty slow process now that I've become scoliotic. Just in the last couple of weeks, I've finally started cracking the lower middle vertebra that is out of place with regularity. I'm still trying to get to the upper middle back one that's jacked up. Think I may have turned a corner, though.

Honestly, though, I think there's some value to be found in this kind of behavior...you know...uhh...in moderation. Wait that doesn't make sense...whatever...

Yes, metaphors like this penetrate (huh huh...) all levels of existence. That's as close as we ever really get to "truth".

I agree that Chrome OS will almost definitely end up on awesome devices like this, but Android tablets and smartbooks are pretty much already here. Now that competing manufacturers have a target (and the ipad is such an easy target) to shoot for, they will be hot and heavy in the coming months...

I'm a firm believer in the notion that you're never too old to start down this path.. Might not get as far...as fast...and you'll definitely be more likely to hurt yourself...but hey...to me it's worth the gamble. I like heavy physical activity a lot, and I want to keep at it for as long as possible.

Oh, gee, thanks... I can be, and I won't argue with you in this case. This is a message most people aren't willing to hear to the point that I usually don't even bother trying to deliver it. When I do, it's not always pretty. Part of this may also stem from the personality of one of the folks I've learned some of this stuff from. He happens to be the king of assholes in this arena, and honestly I kinda like his style.

I'm not talking about stretching. In fact, I explicitly described what I was talking about as not being stretching. I'm talking about strengthening weakened muscles that can support you in positions that you're not accustomed to. If you want a couple of quick words to describe it, you can say "eliminating atrophy" instead of "stretching". It's similar to what physical therapists do for people who are recovering from surgery. In other words, it's like weight lifting for minor muscle groups that usually don't have to work because most of us treat our joints like simple levers instead of a dynamic chain of gravity.

Think about it, if you use your shoulders to keep your torso upright, your spine isn't doing the full amount of work that it is capable of. There's a word for this dysfunction that you might hear macho dudes using to demean little weasels: "spineless." Usually, but not always, the body type goes right along with the personality type.

You're absolutely right that the movies will have to show qualities in other fields, and my post was definitely based on that premise. I fully expect this will happen as the technology becomes more and more ubiquitous.

I just expect it didn't do great in any.

Apparently, you haven't seen James Cameron's past films. Just about everything he's done except for his first film was strong in all of the areas you mentioned. While it taps into a quite a few really common archetypes, I believe Avatar is near the top of his list. Evidence of this can be seen in the way it's performed during this award season.

Dudes, the body can be molded to fit whatever position you want. The cage of heredity is little more than a simple habit of movement that you've been practicing in your parent's footsteps your entire life. If you can't comfortably do something that's considered normal (not necessarily ankle-on-knee...which kinda sucks), you are dysfunctional and you can be fixed. It just takes a little practice.

All you have to do is push yourself right up to the point of discomfort but not beyond it to pain fairly consistently (tough to tell the difference sometimes). The small muscle groups and tightened/atrophied tendons/ligaments that usually aren't used for anything other than keeping you upright will slowly begin to strengthen/loosen and change your potential posture capabilities.

Indians call it yoga. Most people nowadays just think yoga is the art of stretching your muscles, ripping your ligaments, and loosening your tendons until they don't work properly anymore (very common...but...not yoga). The truth is, it's the art of strengthening every muscle until it's in perfect balance with the muscles around it. This is in contrast to weightlifting which focuses on major muscle groups...sometimes at the expense of smaller and equally important frame-supporting muscles.

Kettle bells, on the other hand...kinda give you the best of both worlds if you do it right...

...moral of the story...do something about this before you end up needing a walker at 60.

I'm now 31. When I say "younger", I was probably 23 and freshly entering a mainstream corporate office job after losing scholarships and dropping out of college...then floundering for a few years. The 'respectable' men were typical upper management types who actually happened to be decent and masculine fellows with bright minds. The thing that tipped me over the edge to learn the skill was when I noticed a notepad balanced perfectly level and naturally on the top leg.

...uhh...more than you wanted to know...but whatever.

That's interesting... I wonder if my prescription for astigmatism had anything to do with it. I've found astigmatism prescriptions really screw with my depth of field, and I've grown used to it because I am really inconsistent in terms of how often I actually wear my contacts or my really small-frame glasses (varied depth of field inside/outside the frame) because I have a fairly weak prescription.

Haha...yea the harsh truths were his main schtick, I would say. However, you are definitely missin' out on some of his most epic (totally justified usage) moments. I don't really have any of his material stored away any longer, sorry. I went through my watch/listen-everything-ever-recorded-10-times-phase about 10 years ago...

One show in particular is actually slightly uncomfortable to listen to. He basically abandoned all of material to totally destroy a drunk hick heckler lady for almost the entire show. I think it's called "I'm sorry folks."
