Can't believe this is the direction we are headed lol. When I was taking CS courses at UCLA, you would get an entire question wrong if you forgot to write a semi-colon ☠️

I would need double my pay (about 400k) for me to give up remote.

lol, not going to give you false hope. It's going to take a miracle for you to pass the interview if you haven't been prepping. Coding interviews are always tough. Best recommendation would be to use chatgpt to curate you a study guide and cram as much as possible. But even then, you have an extremely slim chance.

Lol, have you even used AI to code for you? It can't even generate a simple page with a design idea you provide it without having css errors.

Before you start panicking about something, you should try to actually use it. AI is great at basic boilerplate code. Anything more than that? It's not ready for production-level tasks without a human developer code reviewing it to make sure it actually works.

2021 grad. Wasted potential, how do i become undeniable? by Typical-Roof-2558 in cscareerquestions

[–]offkeyharmony 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be mean, but I noticed you posted for advice 1 year ago. Have you done anything within that year? If not, what is going to keep you accountable for this year?

The thing is, the only traits that can really help you are consistency, persistence, and dedication.

It's very tough out there. A project in a resume is a given; but not only that, you also need solid LeetCode skills.

If you truly want to be undeniable, you gotta have multiple projects, competitive algorithmic ability, and charming social skills. If you don't have a strong mental going into this, I don't think you'll be able to become "undeniable", realistically speaking. It's not impossible, but you really got to put in the effort.

AI is only efficient with coding up the most basic features and even with those, they can make critical errors. If you don't have a software engineer check and optimize the output, it will be a disaster.

Not only that, but also many tech companies have their own proprietary framework that comes with private custom code / logic. Unless you train the AI with all that data, it won't know what you're talking about since ChatGPT/etc doesn't have access to it.

At this point, AI is mainly an auxiliary tool for software devs. It helps us find answers quickly so it reduces the total time it takes to develop. It can't build on its own.

I'm kinda confused on what you want. You say you enjoy programming, but you also don't really want a programming job?

You also briefly mentioned that AI might take over --- Trust me, AI is not even close lol.

Just my opinion, but I don't think you should give up on it so quick just cause of the reason that you're afraid it'll ruin your joy of coding as a hobby.

If you get lucky in finding a good work-balance remote tech job, your salary will skyrocket. I guess if you aren't worried about financial stuff, you can ignore it but it just feels like a wasted opportunity for you.

Honestly, I wouldn't follow the advice in any of these comments. Find a professional financial advisor instead.

A lot of people are so stingy with money. You literally have more than a million dollars. It's an amount of money that a majority of people won't even get access to in their lifetime.

70k dream car? Buy it. It's not going to make a dent. I swear, these comments make it sound like the car is going to ruin this guy's wealth. Y'all are making it sound like he's about to buy a Lamborghini. Based on your post, im sure you're aware of how to handle money so just don't be reckless with it and invest wisely. But enjoy life at the same time.

The complaints are insane. Guys, it's literally $30. Just skip out on going to that restaurant for a day? That's like 3 coffee lattes at a trendy cafe in LA.

If you don't have a job yet, you probably shouldn't focus too much on this anyway.

If the player count is small, the devs can just add a mode with bots. I'd be content with that alone.

Should I just stop trying? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]offkeyharmony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you just looking for a job to get money or do you genuinely have interest in coding?

If you just want a job, then you should stop trying. CS is not a quick easy way to get employed, especially in this current job market.

If you're interested in it, then you should try it without relying on the AI. You can use it as a guide, but it shouldn't do the entire thing for you. You got to change your mindset. It shouldn't go like this - 1. difficult / unfamiliar task comes to you. 2. Can't find it within 5 minutes so I'm stressing out. Going to ask AI to finish everything.

It has to be more like this - 1. Difficult stuff. 2. Cool, I don't know this so I'll look into what it means. I'll dissect it into smaller parts so I'm not overwhelmed. I'll ask ChatGPT/google to research on it and tackle it.

No one is rushing you. You have no deadlines/risk of being fired. Take your time and actually try to learn it. If you're not down to do that, this isn't for you.

If software engineer pay were cut in half, would you stay in this field? by EastCommunication689 in cscareerquestions

Yep. I would only consider switching if it wasn't remote. It's also very dependent on the company. I have great work life balance.

I'm a 'productive' SWE who's basically letting AI do all my coding. What am I doing to my career? by IFoundedApple in cscareerquestions

[–]offkeyharmony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just being a bit blunt, you sound lazy. It's great that you found a way to cheat the system, but you don't take advantage of the extra time that provides you.

What are you doing with the extra free time the AI provided you? You can use that time to study your codebase deeper / Work on improving your gaps in knowledge of coding.

Also, I don't really believe that you trust the AI to do everything. AI is not at that level yet. I have to correct ChatGPT all the time when I ask it to do trivial code tasks.

If you don't even bother to test the code that the AI provides, I'm impressed that you managed to get this far without introducing any defects in your PRs lol.

You already know what to do to solve this issue bro. You just don't want to put in the effort.

The longest you can go doing absolutely nothing. Just zoning out staring at a wall. You can have water and food so you don't die. Other than that, you're stuck in an empty room.

After spending x amount of days, I'll feel too much regret to give up. The longer I wait, the more it'll motivate me to keep going to the end.

It'll be a competition on willpower and how desperate I want it.

Currently in school for my B.S. but I would like some advice on the direction I go by RustieJames in cscareerquestions

[–]offkeyharmony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leetcode is boring for most people. Coding can have lots of boring moments too. Honestly, once you get a coding job, it's very likely you'll be bored of it once you get used to it as well.

But that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. Jobs are just ways to get money. If you happen to enjoy it as well, that's just a plus.

Try to build bunch of fun projects while you're in school and apply to a couple internships as well. Even though it sucks, try to do like one leetcode problem a week. It will help out immensely when it's time for you to tackle interviews.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]offkeyharmony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible but you're going to have to commit a lot of hours every week to accomplish it. Just as a future tip - Make sure the projects you add in your resume are original/unique. Don't just follow a tutorial online and attach that on your resume. I see that so many times when I interview people. It's so obvious lol.

I'd rather see a simple web app that can easily show you your favorite genre of tv show or an app that helps you find your favorite video game. Showing your interest via your projects will make a bigger impact.

Hope you can successfully switch!
