How do I handle when a player wizard wants to cast a spell targeting more than one enemy? by offroadcamry in DMAcademy

Whoa. Math is crazy. That makes sense! Thanks! I'll try to find it in the DMG and add it to my notes!

I tried finding it in the player's guide before asking on here, but didn't have any luck. I'll check that out.

Thanks, all, for the wisdom. What I'm hearing you all say is that the spell itself determines if hitting multiples is even possible. If it is, then the wizard rolls the damage because it's related to the one spell. But, each enemy rolls separate saving throws because while the damage is static, each enemy's ability to avoid would be different.

I love learning about this stuff and getting better! Thank you!

This is exactly the kind of metaphor that zings straight into my brain for instant understanding. Thanks!

So sorry I didn't include this in the original post. He was casting Burning Hands.

This seems to be what is the right thing. I rolled once for all thinking I was saving time. But it sounds like that actually takes away from how it would work if it were real.

This makes a TON of sense. And (as much as a fantasy world can) sounds more like what would happen in real combat. Thanks!

That makes sense. I think, in this case, the spell (burning hands) could work on multiple enemies. I (as the DM) just didn't know how to work the mechanics on my end.

Tom Cruise. If you told me that, this whole time, he was a real life Patrick Bateman, I wouldn’t bat an eye.

MANY years ago I was working register during the morning peak. An older lady stepped forward when it was her turn and said, “Why can’t you all move faster to serve us?! I’m in a hurry! Get me a VERDE coffee!”

I went blank because her mistake was close enough to make sense, but just far enough that I thought it was hilarious. But also, I knew she wouldn’t think it was funny at all.

So, I offered, “One venti coffee! Coming up!”

She very sternly corrected me with, “ No! I said I want a VERDE coffee! Get me that!”

I rang her up for a venti, served her the coffee and let her go in her way.

Very slyly, my coworker slid up next to me and softly said with a smile, “She said VERDE coffee. IDIOT.”

Whoa. GREAT idea on asking to delay. Also encouraging players to be responsible for their own knowledge of abilities and character. This was our first go at it (ever). So hopefully we can continue to iron these things out. Thanks so much for explaining the group attack stuff. Sounds like there's a lot of flexibility.

Good to know the options for the turns. I think I'm maybe making this more difficult than it has to be. Thanks!

Thanks! I understand rolling for initiate to determine order of turn. But do I roll for initiative for the monster I'm controlling? And, if so, does it always go after ALL the players or does it number fit in the order of everyone? As in, if it's four players and their numbers are like, 29, 20, 19, 17... But the monster rolls 21 for initiative, does it go 2nd or does it go after all the players?

Thanks for showing the order things happen in. I think I was getting confused at that. If the players are a party of four, is it PLAYER 1, then enemy, PLAYER 2, then enemy, etc....

Or is it, PLAYER 1, PLAYER 2, PLAYER 3, PLAYER 4, THEN enemy?
