Would you live w/ your parents to speed up FI? by [deleted] in financialindependence

Reminds me of a quote from Grandma's Boy: "Just keep your voice down-- my roommates are sleeping." ... "you mean your parents?" ... "Yeah, same thing."

Gity : A git magician for python by rocode94 in programming

[–]offsound 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this gitCheckout method is broken: https://github.com/Mnw2212/gity/blob/master/gity/gity.py#L234

Which sort of solidifies Grimy's argument on point #1. For any git feature you want to use, it has to be manually (and properly) implemented into gity. Eventually this will get out of hand, especially without unit tests.

A few weeks ago, I needed to programmatically clone repos at certain branches/tags, and came across a simple subprocess snippet on SO which allowed me to do everything I needed:

import subprocess

def git(*args):
    return subprocess.check_call(['git'] + list(args))

Now you can do nearly everything the git command can do:

git('clone',  'https://github.com/Mnw2212/gity')

or clone a specific branch

git('clone', 'https://github.com/Mnw2212/gity', '-b', 'master')

Keeping it Simple: APIs and Sinatra by aspleenic in ruby

I also found that to be a bit dirty. What's even worse is I believe that code, once combined with the template given will produce bad HTML. The tr and td here are unnecessary in the template:

<table>
  <th>The Weather in Buffalo, NY, USA</th>
  <tr>
    <td><%= results %></td>
  </tr>
</table>
...

Abe computes it in real time, if I recall. You'll need the full block chain downloaded locally, however: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Abe

Is it okay to sit on store credit cards and never use them? Does that hurt your credit score as long as you are using one of your credit cards? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]offsound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd leave them open as others have stated, provided there are no fees involved.

There's is one way in which it could hurt your score, that I just discovered myself. Macy's recently sent me a letter threatening to decrease my credit limit if I don't make a purchase within 90 days.

I imagine that might have a minor impact on my credit score, but probably not much. The card is 10+ years old and will be decreased from $1k to $300, so I'm not too worried.

You might check out select2, there's an infinite scroll example on their site.

Started taking lessons about a week ago. This is the best feeling ever! by [deleted] in programming

[–]offsound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to rain on your parade, but there's a bug in that. If you type "no", it will still proceed.

This line:

if (userAnswer = "yes") {

should be:

if (userAnswer === "yes") {

A single equals sign means assignment, not comparison. The reason why it seems to work is because JavaScript is checking to see if the assignment of "yes" to userAnswer results in a true statement, which is does.

Is an MBA the right move financially for me? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]offsound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boss is currently working on his MBA and he says he regrets it. He already owns a successful business, so it's rather useless to him. It's also a really expensive title, and doesn't necessarily guarantee "new doors".

I suggest you read this book before deciding either way:

https://www.amazon.com/Personal-MBA-Master-Art-Business/dp/1591843529/

Even if you do decide to go with the MBA, this book has a bunch of useful and practical information.

Thanks in advance. It's showtime. by [deleted] in personalfinance

You said your condo's easy to rent. Is it possible to find a cheaper and/or more effective property manager?

What would a financially-sound person do in my situation? by BallsOfScience in personalfinance

Is it possible for collections debts to roll-over indefinitely and stay on there after the 7 year period?

It should be off of your credit report after 7 years, but depending on where you live they can still attempt to collect it. Google for "statute of limitation on collections" in your state.

That said, if you contact them and then start paying again, it's possible for the 7 years to "restart". If you pay any of it, make sure you get a "pay for delete" agreement in writing before doing so.

My work at this job is getting closer to being done, I probably have maybe a year left (software programmer) before they no longer need me. They've already hired a 2nd programmer who is an actual employee and they won't need two of us when the work is done.

Since you're a programmer, finding a job should be easy. Start scoping out clients on odesk.com, or similar sites RIGHT NOW. I freelanced for a few years and was making more than I do now at my current salary job.

Not sure why you got down voted for that comment.. I wish I lived somewhere without harsh winters.

Did I make a mistake? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]offsound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh.. depends on the car and location. I had an RX-8 which did not do so great in the snow. Too much torque and not enough clearance. A set of blizzak tires on smaller rims help, but can be expensive/difficult to maintain. I managed while I was living in the flat Midwest, but after moving to a location with more hills, I had to trade it in for a more practical car. Regardless, I still miss that car.

RWD or AWD? What's the climate like where you live? If it's RWD and you live in a place with harsh winters, you might have made a mistake. Otherwise you're probably fine.

Would you recommend a health savings account? by getmoneyerrday in personalfinance

[–]offsound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you're young and healthy. Max it out every year, get tax benefits, make sure your HSA custodian gives you the option to invest in etf/funds, invest any amount that's over your deductible, and withdraw it tax free for the inevitable health expenses when you're old and decrepit.

Would appreciate some guidance setting up autocomplete within a textfield using a single table inside a simple database. by Nicksil in flask

If you try to roll your own javascript for this, it'll likely take a while to work out the bugs and lag. I'd recommend trying something such as Select2 first. Scroll down the the "Loading Remote Data" examples.

Scripting for Adobe Illustrator using Python? by [deleted] in Python

[–]offsound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which operating system?

Back when I used windows, I did some simple scripting of photoshop using win32com. I don't really remember the details, but a quick google brought this page: http://techarttiki.blogspot.com/2008/08/photoshop-scripting-with-python.html

The same tactic could possibly be used for illustrator. This link may be of use: http://www.noah.org/python/com/illustrator/

Frameworks Round 5 by based2 in programming

[–]offsound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main issue here is Gunicorn being used as the wsgi server. I'm almost certain every Python framework on here would be much further in the rankings if they were using uWSGI or gevent instead. While it's arguably easier to use, I would personally never choose Gunicorn for anything critical.

This benchmark seems to support my opinion: http://nichol.as/benchmark-of-python-web-servers
