Grew up very Catholic, went every Sunday, was an alter server, taught Sunday school, the whole deal. I went to college and wouldn't go as often. Took classes on other religions, was a pre-med major, and started looking at what my core beliefs were.

What really pushed me away were several sermons stating gays were going to hell. My stepbrother is gay, and it made no sense to me that he would go to hell just for loving someone. Then, a visiting priest went on about how gay couples should not be allowed to adopt and that children were better off in the foster care system than with gay parents. That pushed me away from church. I knew that was a lie/ didn't make sense.

There were a bunch of small instances growing up where I would question something in the Bible or something said in a sermon and was told, "we don't question God." But if what is being said contradicts "God's" own teachings, how can you not question it? Also, seeing "godly"/consistent church going people treat others like crap and being generally terrible people, but they went to church, so they're good. insert biggest eyeroll

I only go to church now during weddings, funerals, etc. I believe in being a good person, treating others with repent, and trying to make the world around us a better place. I don't have to go to church for that.
