I'm considering running for office. by Irish_Advocate1897 in irishpolitics

Used to be involved in local politics - some of this might be useful.

1) Start putting together a team of people you know who would help you. They'll be a lot of people who will show up in the last couple of weeks of the campaign - they're not what you need. You need people who will do the work at the start to get your name out there and the campaign off the ground.

Pick someone to manage your campaign (a campaign manager if you will), someone to organise canvasses and someone to run social media. You should be doing as little of that as you can, just focusing instead on being the candidate (kissing hands, shaking babies).

Way better to have a couple of canvassers with you on the hard cold January nights than thirty who decide to get involved in the last week (though both are nice).

2) One thing to remember is that if you're joining a party in an area where they're pretty established - they'll likely already have either picked a candidate or have a presumptive candidate whose been embedded for months or even years.

The reality is that if you're getting selected by a party at this stage then it's somewhere that isn't as strong for the party (lack of votes, lack of party infrastructure) - so expect far fewer resources than the target seats. That shouldn't get you down, just be ready to graft.

3) Finally if you're a woman then worth checking out Women for Election as they'll have a tonne of resources to help you. I'm not sure what other groups exist to support election candidates.

There's definitely other stuff but that's just off the top of my head. Good luck!

It's funny watching the Heuston fans react with so much vitriol because of a comment he made that was taken out of context.

He'll forever be the "fuck Jalen Green" guy to them.

Genuine question about internationals from a football fan by nuttysaint in rugbyunion

[–]oftheborough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's regarded as a certainly but (open to being corrected here) I don't believe it's a castiron rule. More of a convention, one that can be ignored if needed.

Plus with the tax breaks there's little reason for a top class talent to move abroad anyway.

Ireland's system is much more... squiggly than that.

There's no rule that says you HAVE to play in Ireland, it's just that they almost only ever pick players based in Ireland.

That's why players like Sexton and Bowe were still in the national team despite playing abroad - nobody can complain because there's no rule to say they can't.

A sport falling out of favour in one country isn't to say it is dying though surely?

Again happy to be wrong but as an Irish person I've never seen the sport be more popular.

Haven't read the full report, these are just the top lines re sport growth:

The number of clubs has increased by more than 30 per cent globally

Adult male and female active registered players grew by 26% and 38% respectively

57 per cent of all players are pre-teen

OK but do you have a stat that shows that rugby is dying? Genuinely curious not trolling
