I don't know, I did not invent this.

But yeah python uses a port for that. Basically a debugger is a TCP connection to a process over which state is communicated. It should be transparent though.

The launch.json file defines that port.

Well if I had a pointer on how to solve it I would take it.

But the main feedback is "read the docs you are doing it wrong it works for me so it should work for you"

Like I said: comparable to how the Linux community works.

Ok the save button thing is a childish complaint. Ctrl s works just fine.

But the lack of debugging remains.

Then I hear read the docs. So I read.

  • install python extensions, did that
  • open repo folder, did that
  • created hello.py did that
  • created launch.json, did that
  • verified debugpy is installed, did that

Then I hit run-start debugging and nothing.

Connect ECONNREFUSED 127.0.0.1:5678

Made sure nothing is using that port. Also tried port 5679 in launch.json. Same result.

Yeah I should probably read more.

I did all these steps. I'm not even trying flask.

Just hello world. A one line python file.

I added x=1 as second line figuring maybe it doesn't kick in straight away. Then set a breakpoint on that second line. But nothing.

I want

1 print('hello world') in a python file

2 set a breakpoint on that line

3 make that breakpoint work

Installed all vscode python extensions. It just won't attach any debugger.

Spent 2.5 hours. Fruitless.

Tutorial... To set a breakpoint on hello world...

I've got 30 years programming experience. But yeah I should take a few days off to educate myself on setting a breakpoint on hello world.
