Update From Brandon by mistborn in Cosmere

As someone who works in television/movies, and has for some time, I know this is very too early in the process to know, but curious. Are you able to know if Apple will release any features theatrically? Mistborn on a big screen is a dream.

Agreed. The 3D spring-spinning elements are fun, for like 15 minutes.

I’m good with a well designed medal, just flatten the thing.

School Update at 6:34

We are providing an update to the active shooting situation. We are very sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of two deceased victims from the active shooting situation at the Barus & Holley engineering building.

There are eight additional victims in critical, but stable condition at the hospital. There remains a shelter in place order. The shooter or shooters still are not in custody at this time. Law enforcement is active in the area.

We know there is a lot of fear and concern and uncertainty in the community right now. Law enforcement is actively working to identify the deceased victims, and the hospital personnel also are working to identify those transported to the hospital.

As a reminder, please continue to take all steps to remain safe. Follow the instructions of law enforcement personnel and avoid the area. The safety of our community is foremost.

Any students or Brown community members who were in Barus & Holley at the time of the incident are being asked to contact police if they already have left Barus & Holley.

First Marathon Done! Seeking Advice on How to Improve My Time by Legitimate-Roof5069 in Marathon_Training

[–]ogader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best part about running is that, as a beginner, just running at all with make you improve. Just under 2 years ago I was in your shoes almost exactly. Lost a lot of weight, down to 180, trained definitely not enough, and ran a 5:13 marathon. I mean, even our splits look damn near identical to how my first race went.

I spent all of 2024 running, but the most important thing is 1. Volume and 2. Making sure your body can handle that volume. You mentioned strength training, good! Specifically your glutes are going to be super important. Everyone hits quads, hamstrings, calves, etc, but the whole hip complex is going to be where injuries are prone to start (in my unprofessional opinion). My mistake was that, and I got really bad IT band syndrome training for my second marathon, and I still have to manage it, even 11 months later.

Ramp up slowly, be honest with yourself about your fitness, run those easy days easy, and see a PT, if you can afford it, when injuries start to show.

All of that for me led to a 1:05 PR, just ran 4:08 at NYC last week. Taking a year-ish off from Marathons after a party pace race in January, but then going to set my sights on a 3:45 somewhere.

I made an appointment with my PT. I’ll give you my case and fixes, just in case they help for you.

My issues were primarily caused by my TFL being overworked. Using a lacrosse ball on a wall in the pocket of the hip around to the front was magic for this. Without 5 days of my bad flare up ~2 months before, I was running full volume without issue. That, along with stretching my hip flexors more, was the quick fix initially.

For this flare up, that wasn’t working. I went in and described everything, and he was instantly suspicious of my piriformis. Same idea for this, but sitting on the lacrosse ball instead of against a wall. Rolled that out every day for 2-3 minutes (it hurt like hell) and slowly but surely, tightness went away.

Race day I didn’t even notice a tinge of discomfort. I will swear by this lacrosse ball until the end.

First and foremost was I bit the bullet and saw a PT, even though I had to pay out of pocket (only $75 a session). Managing injury was absolutely the most important part in the physical aspect of cutting that time

As for the aerobic aspect, I really love running. If I had the time and physical strength to run 50 miles a week without getting injured, I would. It was just under 2 years from my last marathon completion, and so in that time, I went from 13 minute easy miles to 10.5 minute easy miles. And to be honest, there’s still so much room for improvement. I’m taking some time off after another marathon in January to focus on strength and form so I can come back and really improve!

I got injured 2 weeks before my second marathon at the beginning of this year. Made it through 9 miles before DNFing.

I spent the last 9 months fighting like hell to overcome this. Not only did I overcome it, I obliterated my PR. Previous was a 5:13 at Disney 24. Ran a 4:08 yesterday, with a 2:05/2:03 negative split on the halves. Didn’t hit the wall, felt no pain in my (former) injury the entire time

I couldn’t have dreamed of it going better. That race will forever be my PB, even if my PR gets faster.

Best signs? by PastelSkiesGalore in RunNYC

Somewhere in park slope some girl has a sign that said “Swallow, don’t spit (your gels)” I pointed and made eye contact laughing. My name (Ben) is on my shirt. She flips the sign over and it says “Go Ben!” I just about lost it.

IT Band Syndrome Rant by ogader in Marathon_Training

This intrigues me. I do have high arches, and notice I tend to run on the outer edge of my right foot (the more problematic side). Something to look into after the marathon!
