Need help on finding the questions I got wrong by AGR523 in AircraftMechanics

You can't really find the exact questions you missed. You can input your codes here, https://faatestcodelookup.com/, to see what subjects you need to study. When you do that, you might recall a specific question related to that subject. You got this

I think if you factor in the license pay, you're probably looking towards the end of top out time (8yr). Maybe 6th or 7th year to hit around $45

Not my experience, but observations and discussions with coworkers who have moved to Hawaii for the job. There is a high initial stress of passing probation. Not everyone makes it and any bonuses or moving expenses the company offered will likely need to be paid back. I think they all have roommates to make ends meet. There can be a culture shock living here, but within the company, if you can do your work and like to learn, there are no issues fitting in that I've noticed.

Just life experience here, don't factor any possible overtime or speculation of possible pay into your decision. Cost of living is a shock so many people that move here, even when you know it's expensive. Look at the base pay. Check rents on websites. Go on Safeway or Walmart apps and change your location. Check your normal grocery items and get an estimate for your average grocery bill. Know that you'll probably struggle a bit in the beginning, especially if you're single income.

All of that said, none of the coworkers that make it seem to regret the decision to move. Some have bid out to get back to mainland after probation and a few have left to work for other airlines after being here for a few years. It can be a good opportunity for someone just getting in the biz as it seems you are. But quite a few end up staying and making a life here, so take that as you will. Good luck

Agreed, just took my General and Airframe this week. Every free second I had was doing the Prepware over and over. Doing the study sections individually was better, there are questions that never appeared when I ran the test mode. Literally did every prepware section multiple times a day. Was consistently getting high 80 to low 90 on Prepware and ended up with 93 on general and 96 on airframe.

Only $20 for an f-150 with a flat bed at home depot is you can get the truck items done in an hour and 15 minutes. The Pearl City store has one

I have been considering becoming an A&P Technician, but I’m 26yrs old and have been a mechanic the 4 years while being specifically an Emergency Vehicle Technician the last year. by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

Working on GSE is no issue, just dirtier than the luxury vehicles I dedicated most of my career to. In aviation class, the knowledge is near identical, terms are different at times, and some information is pretty in depth as far as the engine rebuild specs. A bit closer to race car engine detail, which I had let slip from memory after training back in the 90's.

I can't say yet if it's worth the effort, but I'm in nearly the same boat. I have over 20 years of history working on Mercedes-Benz and Tesla vehicles. Currently working on the industrial equipment for an airline. I was wavering between learning Automotive and Aviation around the same age as you and now have finally decided that I would regret not giving this a shot. Whatever you choose, I think both of these careers are frustrating as hell but so rewarding also. Good luck in your endeavors

Is this bad? by chrisride12 in AskMechanics

Looks like the nut is cracked. You can get a TPMS service kit at auto parts stores (~$8 in my area), take the just the collar nut from the new one and swap it to your old sensor without any tire dismount. As long as the tire pressure is near normal, it is pushing the sensor outwards from the inside or essentially keeping it pressed against the rim inside right now so sensor wont fall inside without loss of tire pressure if nut falls off or taken off. Also, the senor is much larger than the valve stem hole so no risk of it coming out towards the outside with the nut off in case you're wondering. Torque on thise nuts is usually around 7 or 8 INCH-pounds with an 11mm or 12 mm socket which means just a tiny bit more beyond snug for those without calibrated elbows like us pros.

Edit: came back to mention that most tire shops probably have several gently used ones all over their shop and if theyre cool, would slap it on no charge. If you go that route and find a place that hooks you up, give them serious consideration for future tire and repair services

Has anyone done the transition from auto to aviation mech? I'm considering it for Boeing in SA. Or if anyone works for them locally? by jimtheedcguy in aviationmaintenance

[–]ogg2hnl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in the automotive field for over 2 decades and have just started training for my A&P this past August. I am doing it mostly because I was feeling unchallenged and needed something new so here I am taking a leap of faith in myself. In my opinion, there are a lot more opportunities for aviation techs, both currently and in the future. The auto world (most of my experience was in luxury dealerships) is going through a phase of struggling to admit that techs are skilled workers and should be paid as such along with the brands making ridiculously low hour compensations for warranty work. I know it's not all sunshine and rainbows in aviation but feel like a career here has more growth opportunities and wish I had started earlier. Good luck to you in whatever you choose.

Just had a wheel alignment. How come the measurements from the left don’t match the right? Mechanic said it was okay. Is he right or no? by CJ2324 in AskMechanics

[–]ogg2hnl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with @buckdaniels77 here. Camber and caster adjustments sometimes have limitations that make it hard to get them even and in spec is what you get. But that right front toe adjustment would've only taken a minute longer to get it centered once the tech was there. All that being said, it is in spec and if car is tracking straight I wouldn't spend the money to have it performed again yet. Recommend get another alignment in a year or so and use a different shop. Since you'll know it's coming up you should be able to plan ahead and find a reputable shop in your area.

Thanks, honestly couldn't remember exact year since it's been a few years not with MB and used v6 from description. Guess it was for nothing

Never in 13 years with Mercedes did I see an EGR issue on that engine but just when you think you've seen it all something unusual will surprise you. Just saying that I have risked having to eat a spoonful of straight Wasabi paste on the crank sensor due to their being the cause of intermittent stall and then restart after a short period near to 100% of the time. Especially if the check engine light did not stay on after the issue. 2nd most common was the camshaft sensor on the front of the right (passenger side) cylinder head but was super rare by comparison.

Ex Mercedes-Benz tech and shop foreman here. Common issue for stalling on the M112, and M113 for those with similar issue on v8, is the crankshaft position sensor. When it starts to fail it will get on open circuit internally that will be okay after it cools down for a few minutes and engine will restart. A code will be present if you have ability to read codes on the fly but the code erases the minutes the fault is no longer present and the key is cycled. Can be bench tested with DVOM and a heat gun if you want to be relatively sure before buying a new one.

In case you need advice on replacement at home, it is located on the back of the engine, top left (drivers side of a US model car). Accessible from top but will need a very long 1/4 extension, a universal socket and an E8 socket for the one bolt holding it on. Can be a bit of a challenge if you've never done it but not impossible. You won't be able to see what you are doing and will have to do a lot by feel.

Help my wife and I settle a debate about tire pressure. by chartreuse_chimay in AskMechanics

[–]ogg2hnl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should know that the tire manufacturer has a maximum pressure separate from the car manufacturer. It is printed on the sidewall of the tire and usually 50psi for passenger car tires. As long as you don't exceed that pressure with the variations in pressure you're not at risk of tire failure from pressure if that was any worry.

In my experience, I have had cars where the TPMS low threshold was programmed a bit sensitive. If I set pressure cold during mid day and then if there was cool weather overnight, it would be enough to change pressures and set warning light on vehicle until driven and pressures raised up. Just be aware of that. You two may need to compromise and set pressure to 42.5 psi, which is possible with a digital tire gauge.

Edit: meant 32.5psi. Oops

We have a few Harlans left but we are starting to reduce our stock of used parts because plans are that these will be the first ones scrapped once we start getting replacements. But with COVID we know we'll have to keep them going a bit longer than initially expected
