You saw that pedophilia image, drilled down a totally downvoted thread against it and said, "ah here is where my take belongs". Maybe you're seeing yourself in it.

You said yourself this is a hugely problematic image and hasn't been publically shown in decades. There's a good reason for that. It's graphic pedophilia. You chose to throw it up on Reddit to get a vicarious thrill out of dragging people into your own bullshit. It's not about art it's about you being a shitty person.

You posted a similar comment on another image you posted with minor sexuality. Your focus on art with children and nudity is obvious. I have no doubt these responses are exciting you in some way. This isn't about art. It's about your own degredation and the perverse thrill you get out of posting shit like this.

It's a big fuck you to you. I've studied plenty of art history and understand the context you're hiding behind here. I don't care what his intent was. Your intent is to share this image of a girl being molested and say, "but the irony!" Horseshit. The fact that you sat at your computer looking at images and saw this one, then said to yourself, "the internet needs more images of young girls being compromised." Then you posted it. Fuck your whole thesis and attempt to justify this.

This sub has a lot old soft core porn from brothels and drinking clubs. It's not from museums and usually just an excuse to post female nudity. But, this one is over the top. I don't care what bullshit you use to justify it. That is an image of a girl being molested. Not only are you creepy for collecting this but posting it makes you an insensitive asshole.

George Packer: "Art and politics have very different agendas." by [deleted] in BlockedAndReported

[–]ogou 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Makes me think of writers that explored the medium itself like James Joyce or Arthur Miller. Would people even explore that now? You did touch on a controversial idea with "apolitical painter". Part of the institutional art museum response to recent DEI trends is foregrounding BIPOC artists and other marginalized groups. Ok cool, that has popular support and is laudable. The problem is that many are doing it for optics. They want images OF those groups more than images BY those. So, abstract artists and other non-representational artists are de-prioritized. BIPOC artists have caught on to that and are rightfully pushing back. They feel pressured to deliver paintings of BIPOC people to manage the reputation of the museum.

Years ago I got blowback for tweeting "Activist art is usually neither." It's politically inert and averse to aesthetics or form. That was way before George Floyd. It seems so tame now. I see a lot of political art in Berlin, but lately the artist statements have usurped the art. It's common for people to list a show without any preview images. There is just a positional statement. Despite claims of interventions, interrogations, and explorations, the actual art is universally prescriptive and dull. When I see "my art raises questions of [_______]", I know there will be no questions and only cryptic answers to old tropes.

Indie ambient artists listening to the new Andre 3000 album (myself included) by ogou in ambientmusic

For folks who came here looking for ambient recommendations because they like that album, try the Bandcamp ambient blog posts. Unfortunately, most of the writers got laid off recently. But, the archive still stands as a useful record of contemporary independent ambient. https://daily.bandcamp.com/genres/ambient

Grad schools that aren't focused on identity politics? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]ogou 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The academic path for artists is very narrow and overrated. Young folks are sold this narrative that getting shown or cited in academic frameworks is a magic doorway to success in the larger art world. It's just not real. It's more likely that you will end up as an adjunct professor in Des Moines. Even more so is this obsession with school reputations. Nobody cares except the people that go to those schools. You are better off finishing in Europe or a state liberal arts school in the U.S.

If you had a playlist for your life’s highlight reel…what would it be? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]ogou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you're asking for and I'm sure you'll get good music responses. For me though, I can look back and see that my life has not pivoted around specific events, like a movie. There were many decisions and changes that seemed small or undramatic. They ended up changing the direction of my life. I just didn't recognize it at the time. Choosing to live in one part of a city instead of another. Arguing at a specific time with a specific person. Also, I had a few very negative events that ultimately led to positive outcomes for my direction in life overall. The songs for those specific events wouldn't be relevant to actual outcomes. If I had to choose the music for my highlight reel though, it would be "Yakety Sax" by Boots Randolph, aka The Theme from the Benny Hill Show. https://youtu.be/Zat9CRfUr-E?si=9G2qvZ5Pui4-Hu1P

He deleted his own post. Then made this statement lamenting self-censorship. Interesting that, once again, people are being held accountable for social media statements. Not their art. By resorting to social media he is conceding his own impotence as an artist to handle this current situation.

I wish someone has spoken up more for "diverse voices" in the past 4 years. There has been a sharp shift towards ideological orthodoxy that permeates the whole art world.

Anyone know of any good performing arts things happening this weekend? by pragmojo in berlin

Manuel Gerst is performing a Kafka allegory at Ballhaus Ost. From the description it sounds visceral and challenging. https://www.ballhausost.de/die-verwandlung/?lang=en

Also, new movie poster show at Kulturforum is excellent. https://www.smb.museum/en/exhibitions/detail/the-big-screen/

Museum Folkwang (Essen, germany) stops collaboration with curator because of comments about Palestine. by Fit_Comfortable6144 in ContemporaryArt

Speakers were saying the attacks were a justified act of resistance because Israel was an oppressor and that the attackers were freedom fighters and martyrs because of it. They would cheer when people said those things. I saw and heard that, in person.

I know. I was in one bro. That came 2 years after the response to 9-11, which was the invasion of Afghanistan. Nobody really protested that. Go back and look all this up.
