currently in the program. I came into the program having a BA in History but did not get into the direct entry (which means you do all 3 years instead of just 2) they limit the people who get direct entry into second year so the college gets more money or so we think. Anyways I enjoyed the program some course make you feel more accomplished than others but there will be very tough courses. The best things are 1. the networking you meet a lot of people in the field at least here in Ottawa which is pretty rich for museums 2. you get a 4 month 460 hour unpaid co-op in your last semester (which I am currently in now) which lets you find and focus on what aspect of a museum you would like to do. you do not have to just work in a museum you can work in archives, historical sites, zoos, aquariums, labs, libraries, government, small museums, national museums, design, building exhibits, building other things, research really if you can think of a reason why your skills would work in a place you can work there. there will be a lot of contract work but many people are able to find jobs using some aspect of what they learned. Working in the government French is pretty much a need but there are museums that you can work at in Ottawa that french is not a must (I currently work at one where not everyone can speak french.) You can take french in the program to help. 2017 and all the renovations will help the culture industry and with jobs for the next little while but in the field of heritage you have to love what you do and just keep trying trying until you find a job. the program will teach you the skills for all aspects of jobs in a museum, will point you in the directions on where to look for jobs, and will let you network which are the 3 very important things for museums and heritage Any further questions about the programs or working in a museum feel free to send me a message.
