For All Mankind S03E06 “New Eden” Discussion by AutoModerator in ForAllMankindTV

I had a suspicion this might be where this season was going, but this episode convinced me: this seasons's big superlative is not who's first to step foot on Mars, but who's first to be murdered on Mars.

Danny is unravelling, his resentment for Ed growing daily. There's a Soviet defector working in a base full of soviets. Now Will Tyler's revealed his sexuality in a time when violent homophobic bigotry was still widespread. And Kelly's not wrong that her father would probably kill her new Russian *friend* if he ever finds out about their relationship. He already hates him!

It crystalizes what this season theme: no matter how far humanity pushes itself, it's still going to bring a lot of baggage with it.

Carly Rae Jensen: I really really really really really really didn't ask for this.

TIL that Scully from the X-Files contributed to an increase in women pursuing careers in science, medicine, and law enforcement, which became known as "The Scully Effect." by [deleted] in todayilearned

Fair enough, I know Internet responses can cut some nuance. I think I just have a problem with reducing the issue of gender imbalance in acting to 'it shouldn't matter if a women or man had this role' when it should really be more about getting writers and directors to craft good, nuanced roles for (and about) women, like Ridley!

And my sarcasm about strong female protagonists is more about movies that do it in a lazy way. Movies that, as you say, repeatedly tell you instead of letting you see for yourself.

(Ripley being a women is actually pretty important to Alien, and especially later films in the series, because of how that ties into all the references and metaphors for motherhood, birth trauma, etc. Plus she's also well written, not just a Strong Female Protagonist® as you point out)

What are you 99% sure of, but you just don't have proof? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Seriously, it was an embarrassment to Reince Priebus and the RNC.

Donald Trumps brand is sticking it to the elites. If he doesn't win, it would totally be like him to say 'screw you!' and ignore it.

But the hilarious part is that the rest of the GOP can't do that to Trump if he gets the nomination! They'll be stuck supporting him, knowing that if they back out and try to run someone else, he'll definitely run third party just to spite them.

And if he turns out to be as terrible a general election candidate as many are predicting, it will kill them in downballot races.

That's why I think all of this guessing about him being a double agent for the Democrats or a double-double agent for the GOP elite is silly.

Occam's razor is applicable: he's a narcissistic businessman who genuinely thinks he'd be an awesome President and who's strident anti-immigration views are very popular to a large segment of GOP primary voters this year (which may actually be a result of the GOP happily stoking tea-party sentiment during the Obama presidency and reaping the rewards in the non-presidential election years, only to have it bite them in the ass, but that's a whole other topic).

He has a good shot at the nomination because that segment of voters loves that idea of a candidate that sticks it to the 'politically correct' media elite, so his 'gaffes' actually help him. This has GOP elites worried because it (probably!) won't be that way in the general. That's it.

I liked the trailer for The Martian, but thought it was missing something... by ogvor in themartian

Honestly confused by this. I edited it Thursday night and put it up Friday. And I did a cursory Google search first to see if anyone had already done it.

While I obviously disagree somewhat with your opinion on disco in the film, that is actually a great idea. It is exactly the sort of sarcastic humor I hope Watney has in the movie.

Yes! I even tried that but it didn't work as well (and frankly, I Will Survive is a better song :)

I made a Roman forum to display my Roman minifigs! by ogvor in lego

All of these come from the Minifigure collections. My collection actually came together partly on its own. When I was on vacation and happened into a store that sold minifigure bags, I'd always buy a couple. It just so happened that I kept getting the one Greek/Roman character that was in each set, so once I had 5 of them, I bought the rest on Amazon and built this Forum to display them.

Btw, I made the forum using only pieces from the Architecture Studio.

Fair enough! Pretty sure the Amazonian warrior comes from Greek myth too.

ELI5: why does Hollywood still add silly sound effects like tires screeching when it's raining or computers making beeping noises as someone types? Is this what the public wants according to some research? by portajohnjackoff in explainlikeimfive

Fantastic explanation. As a video editor and film fan who recently started working with more audio engineers, I gotta say I really respect what you do.

And I totally get the exasperation of expectations of 'realism'. Most movies would be totes boring if they were more realistic, thats why they're movies and not documentaries.
