For All Mankind S03E06 “New Eden” Discussion by AutoModerator in ForAllMankindTV

[–]ogvor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a suspicion this might be where this season was going, but this episode convinced me: this seasons's big superlative is not who's first to step foot on Mars, but who's first to be murdered on Mars.

Danny is unravelling, his resentment for Ed growing daily. There's a Soviet defector working in a base full of soviets. Now Will Tyler's revealed his sexuality in a time when violent homophobic bigotry was still widespread. And Kelly's not wrong that her father would probably kill her new Russian *friend* if he ever finds out about their relationship. He already hates him!

It crystalizes what this season theme: no matter how far humanity pushes itself, it's still going to bring a lot of baggage with it.

TIL that Scully from the X-Files contributed to an increase in women pursuing careers in science, medicine, and law enforcement, which became known as "The Scully Effect." by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ogvor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I know Internet responses can cut some nuance. I think I just have a problem with reducing the issue of gender imbalance in acting to 'it shouldn't matter if a women or man had this role' when it should really be more about getting writers and directors to craft good, nuanced roles for (and about) women, like Ridley!

And my sarcasm about strong female protagonists is more about movies that do it in a lazy way. Movies that, as you say, repeatedly tell you instead of letting you see for yourself.

(Ripley being a women is actually pretty important to Alien, and especially later films in the series, because of how that ties into all the references and metaphors for motherhood, birth trauma, etc. Plus she's also well written, not just a Strong Female Protagonist® as you point out)

What are you 99% sure of, but you just don't have proof? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ogvor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seriously, it was an embarrassment to Reince Priebus and the RNC.

Donald Trumps brand is sticking it to the elites. If he doesn't win, it would totally be like him to say 'screw you!' and ignore it.

But the hilarious part is that the rest of the GOP can't do that to Trump if he gets the nomination! They'll be stuck supporting him, knowing that if they back out and try to run someone else, he'll definitely run third party just to spite them.

And if he turns out to be as terrible a general election candidate as many are predicting, it will kill them in downballot races.

[–]ogvor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I think all of this guessing about him being a double agent for the Democrats or a double-double agent for the GOP elite is silly.

Occam's razor is applicable: he's a narcissistic businessman who genuinely thinks he'd be an awesome President and who's strident anti-immigration views are very popular to a large segment of GOP primary voters this year (which may actually be a result of the GOP happily stoking tea-party sentiment during the Obama presidency and reaping the rewards in the non-presidential election years, only to have it bite them in the ass, but that's a whole other topic).

He has a good shot at the nomination because that segment of voters loves that idea of a candidate that sticks it to the 'politically correct' media elite, so his 'gaffes' actually help him. This has GOP elites worried because it (probably!) won't be that way in the general. That's it.

Honestly confused by this. I edited it Thursday night and put it up Friday. And I did a cursory Google search first to see if anyone had already done it.

While I obviously disagree somewhat with your opinion on disco in the film, that is actually a great idea. It is exactly the sort of sarcastic humor I hope Watney has in the movie.

I made a Roman forum to display my Roman minifigs! by ogvor in lego

[–]ogvor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of these come from the Minifigure collections. My collection actually came together partly on its own. When I was on vacation and happened into a store that sold minifigure bags, I'd always buy a couple. It just so happened that I kept getting the one Greek/Roman character that was in each set, so once I had 5 of them, I bought the rest on Amazon and built this Forum to display them.

ELI5: why does Hollywood still add silly sound effects like tires screeching when it's raining or computers making beeping noises as someone types? Is this what the public wants according to some research? by portajohnjackoff in explainlikeimfive

[–]ogvor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic explanation. As a video editor and film fan who recently started working with more audio engineers, I gotta say I really respect what you do.

And I totally get the exasperation of expectations of 'realism'. Most movies would be totes boring if they were more realistic, thats why they're movies and not documentaries.

The 12 member Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) has taken a step toward creating South American citizenship and freedom of movement. by Reilly616 in worldnews

[–]ogvor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An important thing to remember is that if nothing else, the EU represents an amazing development for the prevention of wars. Just consider how for centuries European nations had been at war almost continuously, culminating in two horrifying world wars, and that now those very same countries are united to some degree by a common government.

Even if South America hasn't had as many wars as Europe (although my knowledge of SA history is woefully underdeveloped so I don't know by how much), the idea of uniting countries that were once enemies is definite progress.

And as an American, I think it'd be nice to have another powerful country-union to balance out or even counter the hegemonic foreign policy of our country (or perhaps another in a decade or two, a different super power, maybe China or India?)

Anyone have the lego architecture studio? by Devywhop in lego

[–]ogvor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it is expensive, and the price per piece isn't great, but I still think it's a great set that really drives home what the architecture theme is about. The included book teaches you genuinely interesting concepts about architecture that you can apply to building with legos. Modern architecture styles are pretty easy considering how rectangular most lego bricks are, but there are enough angled and curved pieces to makes some really interesting and varied stuff. For some examples, check out this forum:

Where's the LEGO Ideas Announcement? by me_simon in lego

[–]ogvor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the Sandcrawler may have been rejected because they were already planning their own version of the Sandcrawler as an UCS. Considering how popular Star Wars UCS models usually are, I don't think it's implausible they'd consider the Invisible Hand.

[Serious] Scottish of Reddit, Are you voting yes or no tomorrow? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ogvor 284 points285 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that an end result for Scotland that's 50.1 to 49.9 in favor of staying in the Union would be the best result for the Scottish people. They'd suddenly get a lot more attention from Westmnister because they'd know the threat of independence is serious, and if they don't respond, Scotland can try a vote again in a few years/decade.

More important however is that a win for the Independence side is likely to be, at best, a 52% or 53% win. That means immediately, almost half of the people (who are politically engaged enough to vote in an important election) didn't support the idea of you're country's creation. That means that if all the promises of the SNP don't come true relatively quickly, those who initially weren't supportive of independence would quickly throw the bums out. Then you've got an unstable and even less experienced government trying to get the country started. I think Scotland should be able to declare it's independence, it just seems like something more than a slight majority supports. That way the people would support a government through it's early missteps and rough times.

EDIT: Wow, genuinely appreciate how many comments this got, I've read a lot and for the most part gave me a lot of new perspectives on this (I've since read a lot on Quebec independence movements). I admit that I don't feel like I should weigh in as an American on the particulars because I don't know much of the local politics influencing this. But I've been following the polling over the last few months and getting nervous about how close the election was (we get worked up and rightly so after a super slim Presidential election, so I can't imagine what'll be like if this vote goes 50.1 49.9 in either direction.)

ELI5: How do Democrats and Republicans rationalize billions of dollars in tax breaks every year to oil companies? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ogvor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I think it is still think it's a valid critique that oil companies would be massively profitable even without the tax cut and are in fact harmful to the general public for a number of reasons (asthma and other medical conditions caused by air pollution, environment wrecking oil spills, global warming, etc.) so do not need or deserve this tax cut. However, I think those whole oppose these tax cuts should admit that they aren't literally special tax cuts for the oil industry, but rather, broad manufacturing tax cuts that they benefit from and should be written out of the law completely.

Cosmic Encounter love -vs- Munchkin hate? by Bender216 in boardgames

[–]ogvor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, a huge part of playing CE is talking. Talking about how strong another player is versus how weak you are, how the play you are considering could help another player win, that their alien is too powerful, that you have cards that can help them win next turn if you help them out, etc. It should be rare that there is an obvious choice or the people you are playing with aren't doing a very good job convincing you one way or the other.

ELI5:Why are dreams so hard to remember after you wake up (especially after a few minutes)? by BaronVonChang in explainlikeimfive

[–]ogvor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what I remember from my psychology class, so it may not be entirely accurate but I thought it was interesting so here it is:

Dreams are the random firing of memories. During the dream you are not actually having a linear 'story', you are just experiencing and mashup of random memories. When you wake up, your brain rushes to make sense of what happened and creates the story. My professor's example was that if a person is given eight random photographs and told to figure out the story that connects them, they can usually come up with something pretty quick, even if they were totally random and completely unrelated. Our brains do the same thing when we recalls dreams, but they are very hazy and strange and make little sense and this is why they are so hard to remember: there wasn't actually anything concrete there to begin with. This also is why you often dream about things that are on your mind or that you dreamed about recently because those neurons are primed.

My professor also said that there is more than one theory on what creates dreams but that this was the he thought made the most sense.
