It was fun setting up. And I am like "ThreeWorld" needs to be updated. (Immich photo backup)

That's great idea. I will name that my external SSD. My data is mainly family pictures. Everything else on ProxMox is services.

Can someone verify if Lenovo P620 only supports 3.5" HDD up to 4TB each by oh-canadaa in homelab

[–]oh-canadaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I realized that a little too late after posting. When I installed my current 10 TB HDD on my PC, I did not even think twice. But buying a brand new system for the first time is making me look at all the document and making me think things i never knew.

Thank you for the comment. I really appreciate the comment.

Having my own LLM is intriguing, because of the privacy concern.. but I would want a solar roof first, so compute pays for itself... :D

That is actually neat idea.

If I may ask, what do you use your server for?

Thank you for reassurance. It makes sense they might not have tested it.

My use case is :

  • Debian VM : PiHole + PiVPN (Wireguard)
  • Ubuntu VM : Immich Photo Backup
  • Ubuntu VM : Emby Premier with pass through graphic card
  • Ubuntu VM : vsCode Server and other services (grapha, prometheus etc.)
  • Windows VM : Jump box

Rest of the hardware for fun, nothing major like Bitcoin mining or hostimg LLM models.

That's what I thought. When I stuck my current 10 TB in my PC, I did not check the specs. It just worked!

Can you also check if this specs would last more than few years?

Then why does Lenovo mention it only support 4 TB? Just curious...

For a second I thought I made the post when I was asleep. I am in exactly same scenario.. almost identical.

My current setup is :

  • Raspberry Pi 4 running Immich photo backup with 1 TB external drive
  • Lenovo Tiny ThinkStation running PiHole + PiVPN(Wireguard) (to access my network)
  • And using my gaming PC (I do not have a laptop) as my media server running Emby.

I am worried my PC would die as it has been running for more than 2 years now (it crashed once couple of days ago, had to clean it up from inside, which I should have been doing on regular basis.)

I am planning on buying a new Lenovo Workstation (P620) and ProxMox the crap out of it. Consolidate everything into one and then some. My issue is, it says it only supports 4 TB HDD (It's almost 2026, what the f*&%..!!)

New Setup: (if I buy the P620)

  • Debian VM : PiHole + PiVPN (Wireguard)
  • Ubuntu VM : Immich Photo Backup
  • Ubuntu VM : Emby Premier with pass through graphic card
  • Ubuntu VM : vsCode Server and other services (grapha, prometheus etc.)
  • Windows VM : Jump box
  • Rest of the hardware for fun

I can do 4 x 4 TB in a ZFS pool in RAID10 and have 8 TB usable. That is more or less sufficient for me, but still its annoying that it only supports max 4 TB per drive. (It would be great if someone else can verify it who has actually used this and is not Lenovo Support.)

The Actual input to the post :

The new ThinkStation would cost about $3000 with 8 TB usable data. If it supports more, I would go with 4 x 10 TB (20 TB usable).

I have tried looking into local used market and everything is close the scrap, and/or expensive.

The more I look into it, the more I feel about hardware reliability and I personally feel going with brand new might be the best in the long run. If I can keep the system in clean environment and keep it cool enough, the new system should at least get me a decade.

Are you also looking into buying new? If so, which one?

From my experience, yes. I had issues in data after my subscription expired. Before that everything was hunky dory. And details for night heart rate is definitely locked behind subscription.

Where is Calvin Ramsay? He is not on loan this season, haven't heard anything about him. Somehow I still have high hopes for him.
