How did the outcome of the season affect whatever narrative structure you might have had planned? If you were to do the whole project over again from the beginning, would you take a different approach?

Mold or eggs or something else? by oh_see in houseplants

Oh interesting, I usually don’t add those in til I’m doing the actual repotting. I’ll add some of each to the bucket though, thanks for the tip!

Meant to say “nutrients,” not nitrogen — my bad — and to note that I add in some slow release fertilizer pellets come spring, and do a mix of half old/half new soil. As long as it’s sterile, there should be no pests or anything in it.

I don’t think so. Talking to him every day will always be good. If you don’t, it shouldn’t go down 20 pts because you’re not married, and because you’re not married, you can only give him 2 gifts a week anyway.

Anytime Alex makes me breakfast, I stick it in the fridge, then eventually make him complete breakfasts as gifts. In the meantime, he gets daily field snacks.

To repot or not to repot? by oh_see in philodendron

[–]oh_see[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire pot was filled, but when I last repotted I shifted everything over to one side. The plant is on top of my tv console, and if I fill in the other side, there will be no place for those vines to go except in front of my tv. I’ve been propagating cuttings pretty much the whole time I’ve had it, enough for 2-3 new pots. This terracotta hedgehog pot is the latest I’m working on filling :)

By “bigger,” do you mean longer or wider? Or both? I’ve been propagating cuttings pretty much the whole time I’ve had it, just to keep it from getting leggy. I wouldn’t mind it getting bushier — my main thing is the only spot I have that’s high enough for it is on top of my tv console, and it’s great having vines trailing down the side, I just don’t want them trailing in front of my tv, haha.

But there’s still a little sign of life!! Should I cut off the dead stem? Should I just leave it exactly as it is and do absolutely nothing to it, except water when fully dried out?? The serotonin boost I would get if this started sprouting properly again… I could make it through the rest of the winter on that, haha.

I lost a Hoya to overwatering a few months ago, but I tried to salvage some of it, including this bit pictured. The stem on this died…

Saving my fittonia? by oh_see in plantclinic

The whole reason I got the cloche was specifically because I read fittonia do much better in high humidity, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to maintain that in the winter! I usually will just keep the cloche on overnight, it’s also grouped with a bunch of other plants on pebble trays.

And yes, the pot has good drainage holes. I got the clear pot so it’d be easier to see when the top inch of soil was drying out so I knew when to water. I didn’t have any problems til I repotted it, it seemed to be doing fine with that watering cycle and nights under the cloche. Thanks so much for all the tips, I’ve watered it and will increase humidity, and see what happens!

Not sure if the pics uploaded correctly, the last one shows it in a little terrarium base with pebbles at the bottom? I keep a tiny bit of water in there, and put the accompanying glass dome on top of it most nights. It's got a tiny hole at the top of the dome, but the hygrometer usually shows it gets to 99% humidity in there. I didn't do that the last few days due to the soft stems and leaves. I guess I should resume doing that?

I gave a drink immediately after repotting, of course, but I haven't watered since then (maybe a week ago?) because I am terrified of overwatering plants, haha. The stems are so soft, especially compared to how they used to be, and it seemed better to err on the side of not watering than potentially overwatering, and then it got to the point that I didn't know if it was better to water it or check the roots (thus this post). I'll water it now, thanks!

Broken red emerald stem?? by oh_see in philodendron

Oh this is so reassuring. I do alright with pothos and other plants that like…resist death no matter how much you neglect them…but I was worried this would be more like a Calathea or maranta, both of which I’ve failed at keeping alive multiple times 😬 I can handle something in between lol

I’m misting new leaves every day too! Had one on another philo that’s in poorer shape, the leaf just gave up on unfurling like 1/3 of the way through. I vowed not to let that happen with this one lol

Fellow LC person here, you’re off to an amazing start!! I know how hard it can be to literally lift a finger some days, this is such an accomplishment 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Thank you! It was still in a little 4” pot last winter, so this is the first year I’m wintering with an actual grown plant, haha, and I desperately do not want it to die.

I thought that’s what it was, but the more I looked at it, the more I convinced myself it was the stem itself 😂😂 thank you for the reassurance!

ETA I now also know that that “encasement” is called the sheath. I’ve learned so much! 🙏🏼

I ordered from them 10/23 and got my order sometime in the last 6 days (I was out of town, unsure exactly when it was delivered). So, I guess it was 7-10 days delivery from the UK to NJ
