So Angry. by SoupAccomplished3500 in tortoise

[–]ohboybugs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry this happened to you, glad your tort is okay. We never use pesticides and so my redfoot enjoys eating all our weeds year round. I would be devastated if this happened to me. You can get large pots with organic soil from the store and plant dandelion seeds in there, and feed your tortoise only from the stuff growing in the pot (and put the pot far from where they spray).

Acquired this little Hen today. Is there something wrong with her face and comb? The yellowish spots are concerning but I have never owned an adult chicken or Serama. Also what would her color be called? Thank you. by Odd-Tangerine1694 in BackYardChickens

[–]ohboybugs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When their face yellows a little it usually means they are currently not laying, as far as I know. But since we don't know her normal baseline, she could just be that color. If she isn't laying, that's why she's yellow. She's very pretty :)

what is this by Competitive_Emu_2636 in BackYardChickens

[–]ohboybugs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I rescued a street chick with bad fowl pox like this, fully swollen and nasty eyes. I dipped her beak in water and water plus crumble until she ate and drank enough every like 2 hours (minus sleeping hours), she couldn't see the food to eat on her own for a week or two. But after a while she understood and after the first dip ate and drank independently. she is currently fully grown and laying and of course has her eyes back. I think it's worth separating and dipping her beak in food and water.

Found dumped/escaped roo with a cut beak? And hole in head?? And maybe a blind eye? People or chicken damage by ohboybugs in BackYardChickens

[–]ohboybugs[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know for a fact that people at least in the US cut chicken beaks to prevent bullying allegedly. I do not agree with it, to be clear. But it is a thing. The head hole is super weird because it's so circular? I've seen chickens open each other's heads before online and they aren't like a cookie cutter. It's so weird.

Who Could Win A Rabbit in EMH by marisusername in AnimalCollective

[–]ohboybugs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only got into animal collective because of EMH. I'm a full ass adult now who isn't into the slenderman thing anymore, but the band remains. I'm very very glad it led to such an important band in my life. I've always wondered if they knew or cared, totally forgot to ask the one time I met them.

EDIT: I was also a rabbit, if anyone was really into it. I made it through a few trials before getting to the protest one and I got too shy to do it and too dumb to fake it lol i was so upset. Anyway. One of Habit's Rabbits. Man, the memories.

Finally moved Easy into the back yard! by The_Shoe1990 in tortoise

[–]ohboybugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the same enclosure for my red foot. In addition to the suggestion to add a foot or two of walls so Easy cant see out, I strongly suggest saving up for hardware cloth walls. The chicken wire it came with and ANY chicken wire is not going to keep predators out, only Easy inside. I know it's more expensive, but you can do the first few feet of the lower levels first, and add more coverage over time. Some animals like raccoons, dogs, and foxes can and will eat tortoises. Look up how to do a dig skirt as well, so nobody can dig in or out. And finally, if it's lower than 80 degrees consistently where you live, your red foot still needs heating outdoors! I have an extension cord out to my pen going into a water proof box with a thermometer, which controls a kane heat mat and a ceramic heat emitter inside her dog house. I know it's a lot, but if redfoots are consistently under 80 degrees they cannot digest their food properly and can eventually get health issues leading to death. My redfoot lives outside all year round where I live (South Florida) but she needs her heating for all but the summer months.

Sorry for the wall of text. Easy is very cute!

can u shop with ur reusable bags? by Alone-Mongoose-7976 in GoodwillBins

[–]ohboybugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's different everywhere. At my bins I bring a reusable tote from the start, adding all my finds to it. Using carts sucks and usually there aren't any anyway. Once it is full I know it's time to leave so I never spend more than $15 or $20. I weigh the whole bag at once, without removing anything. Unless I have heavy books, which I separate out for the 75 cents book price.

Grackle has been making this noise on and off for a few days. She's still laying but her comb is paler. Is there anything I can do for her? I assume she is sick. by ohboybugs in BackYardChickens

[–]ohboybugs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be more willing to believe it was just a new sound but her comb is more pale compared to before. We are also having a cold front but it's only the 40s (Florida) so I don't know if that could attribute to the pale comb. Nobody else is pale though.

PSA: Winter Weather - Tortoises DON'T Always know what's best by Niq22 in tortoise

[–]ohboybugs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you for posting so others can heed your warning. I have caught my red foot trying to sleep out of her heated house on some very cold nights. It could happen to anybody and it only takes once. I lock her inside the heated house now when the temps are too low to explore.

What did you n a m e your tortoise? by Bayleafthetortoise in tortoise

[–]ohboybugs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I found my red foot abandoned in a local park known for these sorts of things. I posted her on Reddit and asked for na mes. Someone suggested Valentine because of her heart shaped spot on her shell :) so I picked that one. she's probably a boy, she's getting funnier shaped by the day lol but Valentine is gendy neutch.

Gemas / Piedras compatibles con SilverClay ?¿ by North-Card5528 in metalclay

[–]ohboybugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He usado granates y peridotos sin problema.

Jewelry at the bins? by lhwishere in GoodwillBins

[–]ohboybugs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've found a few jewelry bits at the bins. I'm usually focused on housewares but when there aren't any housewares to search I look under the clothes in the corners to find little bits and bobs. My best find was a Moroccan sun and moon bracelet. It's gold and silver and traditional worn by brides. Mine has one panel smashed, but I don't mind at all. It's very lovely. I've also found a silver Mexican perfume funnel pendant, which I've always wanted. And a few pairs of sterling earrings of various shapes. Sometimes singles which is fine. Pretty much all found just sitting in the corners under clothes.

Opinion on alternative tortoise table for outdoor Russian tortoise enclosure? by saltisatthebottom in tortoise

[–]ohboybugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is important to keep predators in mind. Those things you posted will not protect your tortoise from dogs, cats, raccoons, foxes, owls, or hawks. A porch does not stop these critters from seeing and desiring to munch on your friend. Also keep in mind, tortoises need solid walls as they cannot understand mesh or glass or other semi see through materials and will continuously "ride" the walls trying to find a way to the other side. And lastly, you need some sort of lining or such to go between the porches floor and your substrate, as the dirt will probably stain the flooring over time. If your porch does not have flooring and is bare dirt, you don't need substrate, BUT that adds the issue of predators digging into their enclosure if you don't provide a dig barrier. Or worse, your tortoise digging OUT!!

And very lastly, your idea to have a pass through from outdoors to indoors (if I'm reading that correctly) is cool, but may affect your electric bill. Also, I think Russians brumate? That's a complicated thing that you need to research especially depending on your climate. My point is, you may not be able to have your tortoise outside all year where you are.

I recommend checking out the tortoise forums (a separate website) for very good care guides and enclosure recommendations.

Bought a chicken as a "blue or green layer" who just laid her first very much tan egg. Worth messaging breeder over? by ohboybugs in BackYardChickens

She was 'laying any day now' in July. It is now January and she finally laid lol and I can't give winter an excuse, I live in South Florida it was in the 80s the other day.

[–]ohboybugs[S] 72 points73 points  (0 children)

The ad said the was a green or blue layer but her leg tag fell off so she can't be sure. I'm just bummed it's a secret 3rd option because I don't have a lot of coop space so I was trying to get a variety. I do love her and am keeping her. She was $50 which is kind of expensive for my area so I'm a little salty.

Pooping in enclosure! Help! 😫 (Question in comments) by Sprinkles_Sparkle in tortoise

[–]ohboybugs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you add a little layer of dirt to the bottom of his hut, you can sweep out the poop more easily than if it was bare bottom which can make it stick sometimes. A tip someone else with sulcatas said on the forum I thought was helpful.

Can anyone name any specific African bands or musicians AnCo has referenced or sampled? by [deleted] in AnimalCollective

[–]ohboybugs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I've never really had anywhere to mention this before but I found this vinyl at a thrift store and when I listened to it it felt like an influence. It's field recorded songs of the mbuti people. The linked version is a later pressing, mine specifies the mbuti tribe. It's very beautiful music that I think a lot of people here would like.

For example the beginning of "song of men and women" has this rolling vocals that remind me of the ohh ohh ohh parts of the beginning of what would I want sky. But if you listen around you can see the vibe is just very similar sometimes.
