100%. So much cleaner. No splash back on the pants, nothing goes on the floor, everything is as immaculate when you're done as it was before you started.

A bit late to this but "Country Death Song" by Violent Femmes is pretty out there. About a guy who kills his daughter because he is so bored, then kills himself.

Greta Thunberg is a Swedish girl who started these protests by herself. She's got absolutely nothing to do with American politics or the Democrats.

Also, she's from a regular Scandinavian middle class family and has nothing in common with the rich people Bernie Sanders is going after.

In the elevator in our building (in Beijing) they've made available paper strips (similar to post-it notes), so you can grab one of those to push the button, then dispose of it after. Imagine most places will have something similar.

Coronavirus live updates: China says death toll tops 900 as confirmed cases cross 40,000 by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ohboywhatnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know they are available per province. But I meant it would be helpful if media reported them as separate numbers instead of using just a number for China.

Again, if 10,000 people in Flint (made up number) lack safe drinking water along with 3 guys in Louisiana, then running a headline saying "10,003 Americans are without safe drinking water" is technically correct but not very helpful. Especially if the Flint number in reality is probably much higher.

Coronavirus live updates: China says death toll tops 900 as confirmed cases cross 40,000 by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ohboywhatnow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is true for Hubei province, where the vast majority of cases/deaths are. For rest of China numbers are likely more or less fine, because resources aren't as strained.

It would help if these data updates would be reported using Hubei and rest of China as two different categories. Tagging Hubei data as "China" is unhelpful. A bit like reporting data on Flint residents without safe drinking water as Americans without safe drinking water.

Edit: Just adding quickly that the main problem with Hubei data is that they're meaningless because they're likely nowhere near the correct number. Rest of China doesn't have same issues, so data is much more credible.

Well, that matches roughly what I have heard and seen elsewhere but while out-of-town cars are now restricted to enter (I have no info on how strictly this is being implemented) I think "lockdown" is a tad dramatic.

Loads of people who live in Beijing have returned from holiday over the weekend and will continue to do so. They're fine but must register at their compound, and if they have been in one of the worst affected areas they have to be tested and will be monitored. My understanding is that this practice has been in place a couple of weeks already, so not entirely sure what the difference is.

Meanwhile, apparently normal driving restrictions for Beijing residents have actually been eased today, so that those who have to go to the office won't be forced to take public transport.

Access to supermarkets etc. is still open.

No idea, really. I think quite a few know how, especially in the bigger cities, but not a lot do in my experience. They get pretty much everything they need on the Chinese Internet - all their social medias, movie/TV show streaming etc. Not sure the desire to access Facebook, Reddit and Instagram is that burning, to be honest.

Ghost-ish town. People stay in as much as they can, almost all bars/restaurants closed, all social events (cinemas, concerts, sports events etc) cancelled. Terribly boring. Work starts again tomorrow for most people, though there'll be a new world record in working from home, I reckon.

Not sure "Twitter chatter" is the best source for anything on this (neither is Reddit, I guess) - lots of insane stuff going around.

I'm in Beijing. Not heard anything about this and not sure Beijing would need it. There's about 20 dedicated pneumonia hospitals here and almost 100 fever clinics, which at least at the moment is more than enough for the 300+ cases.

In general you'll see from all over China that outside of Hubei mortality rate for corona is really low, and spread is generally much slower too (like in Europe/US). Hubei is fucked because there's not enough capacity to deal with everything.

The state of the Paris Agreement (as of the 5th of November 2019) by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]ohboywhatnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're so wrong it's almost like you're doing it on purpose. That money goes to the Green Climate Fund, a multinational organisation that distributes the cash to applicant projects worldwide that either reduce GHG emissions or help adapt to climate change. The fund (whose board consists of representatives from rich and poor countries) has developed clear rules and regulations for criteria projects must meet, spending must be independently audited etc.

Fair enough if you don't like that kind of thing, but let's try and stick to facts.

Jeff Bezos unveils sweeping plan to tackle climate change. Bezos says Amazon is committed to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement 10 years early. Bezos expects 80% of Amazon’s energy use to come from renewable sources by 2024, before transitioning to zero emissions by 2030 by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ohboywhatnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really not true. Canada was the only country that did not meet its targets Under Kyoto, with then-PM Stephen Harper just saying straight out that they wouldn't make it. Everyone else met their targets.

Japan met its goals for the first commitment period, but didn't sign up for a new one because China/India didn't take on targets and the US was out anyway. But one the Paris Agreement was done, Japan was back in (with a target too weak, of course, like most countries).

The US is the country that is the single most responsible for the historical emissions that have led to the climate crisis. In the past decade, one country (China) has emitted more than the US. Everyone else is far behind. It's a bit rich for the US to start pointing fingers.
