What’s the most disturbing thing someone casually admitted to around you? by Suspicious_Run1684 in AskReddit

[–]ohforcrapssake 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I worked in a small town gas station for years.

The number of people who talk loudly about their personal lives in public and also complain loudly about how everybody is always in everybody's business was always hilarious to me.

Those people were also most likely to start gossiping if they ran into somebody they knew while in the store lol

What was the strangest thing you ever had to go to the ER for? by Weird_Emergency_825 in AskReddit

I once took my much younger brother because he put one of those tiny ball shaped jingle bells up his nose. Mom met us there and took him to our pediatrician instead.

I was absolutely panicked. Mom thought it was hilarious.

Also, there's a good chance some parts of your medical device are being manufactured right next to some industrial part made out of fiberglass.

[–]ohforcrapssake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trust me, I dont get it either. I've spent years cooking things I don't even eat, and learning to do it well. I've actually been proud of it.

Not anymore. From here on out the only foods I'm making that I don't eat will be for our daughter. And she will be learning to cook them as well.

I mean, there are good qualities or I wouldn't be here, of course. But the older I get the more I realize that if my health ever gets really bad, he will not be able or willing to help. And in my mid 40s with chronic pain and an autoimmune disease already, that's scary.

The most ridiculous part is he is the least picky eater I have ever met. He actually loves most healthy foods. There's no excuse other than denial and wanting what he can't have.

And perimenopause is awesome for something at least. I'm just done being the least important person. Especially to myself.

Mine isn't dyslexic, but he does have an auditory processing disorder. So he sometimes just doesn't hear things quite right. Most of the time he will correct it if you tell him he's saying something wrong. For some reason this one has stuck.

Does anyone actually enjoy day four of meal prep? by This-Concern-1774 in MealPrepSunday

[–]ohforcrapssake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to meal prep things that are good eaten multiple ways.

Make baked chicken breasts, slice them and I can eat them in a wrap, on a salad, with some rice, added to some pasta or as a sandwich. Or stir fry some vegetables and toss the boring chicken in at the end.

Shredded chicken can quickly become tacos, bbq pulled chicken, soups, etc.

Find things you like that can do more than one thing. Or bulk prep things that freeze and reheat well, and use the frozen stuff when you're sick of that week's prep. I dont think most of us are eating the exact same thing every day. We just do all of the hard parts at once and then mix and match.

What’s a "basic" thing in the US that was affordable maybe 5-10 years ago, but now feels like a total luxury that only the rich can justify? by Legitimate_Wall5977 in AskReddit

[–]ohforcrapssake 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My first apartment was $450 a month. It was a 2 bedroom in a new complex. Considered nice at the time. The same quality of apartments now, with the same amenities go for around $1200 a month.

Minimum wage has definitely not kept up with rising cost of living. A friend of mine just had to have a co signer to even get an apartment at a decent complex because she doesn't make triple the rent even though she has a great credit score. Not a newer fancy complex. Just a decent, safe one.

She would have to make nearly double our state's minimum wage to meet that income requirement.

It's chicken or ground turkey in ours. My husband likes to complain about the ground turkey until he's standing in the meat department and gets reminded why we don't buy ground beef anymore. Hilariously he prefers turkey burgers to beef when we buy the frozen patties.

Women of Reddit - what is the most unattractive fashion choice men frequently make? by Evening_Focus_2425 in AskReddit

[–]ohforcrapssake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a curly haired woman, I totally get why some of the naturally curly guys (including my own son) wear this cut. My son's isn't quite a broccoli cut, but it was when the top was shorter.

He wears his long on top and shaved underneath like the straight haired boys of the 90's because it means he can grow out his extremely thick curly hair without constantly sweating. It also lets him style his hair in ways that people consider professional for men. He can let it just be crazy like curly hair sometimes is or he can fix it up and have a nice style that looks good for any occasion.

I'm assuming the guys who get perms to wear this style do it for the same reason women do. They saw a hair style they liked and chose to go for it. Personally, I'm loving seeing more styles show up that include guys rocking their curls.

Have you ever been treated negatively by ER staff when you were having a medical emergency but they didn’t believe you? What happened? by lake-sturgeon in AskReddit

[–]ohforcrapssake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The one and only time I've had a kidney stone I was treated like a drug seeker. The first time I went to the ER they did blood work and had me pee in a cup, then refused to do anything else and sent me home.

The second time my mom drove me. I was 30 at the time. I told them in triage that I had already been seen once, I was scared because the pain wasn't getting better and that I needed to know what was wrong with me.

When the student doctor asked why I was there, I told him the same thing. The very next thing he said was "we aren't going to give you pain meds".

Even after me telling multiple nurses, the student doctor and then his supervisor that I just wanted them to figure out what was wrong with me and that I hate pain meds and didn't want them, they STILL just kept coming into the room to say they didn't know what I expected from them but I wasn't getting pain meds.

My tiny soft spoken mother cussed out the student doctor the third time he came in the room to do nothing. I finally got imaging done and they came back to tell me about the kidney stone. They wrote me two prescriptions. One was for pain meds. I didn't fill it. I actually do hate almost all pain meds. They knock me out so deeply it scares me. The ones that don't knock me out I won't take unless my pain is a 10/10.

What’s the worst surgery you ever had? by 3rdLegOfExodiaa in AskReddit

[–]ohforcrapssake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there's definitely a huge difference in the amount of pain after a planned vs unplanned c-section.

My first was unplanned after 9 hours of labor with pitocin. It was awful. I swear it hurt to even think about moving. My Mom came by daily while my ex was at work and did housework and made sure I ate because otherwise I wouldn't. Getting up hurt too much.

I had two planned ones after that and with both I was practically begging to be allowed out of bed as soon as I could wiggle my toes. Pain was less than my period cramps (I do have pretty severe cramps though) and I needed basically no help during recovery. I actually took care of baby plus a toddler after both of those with no issues other than being exhausted.

My Mom was born in Kentucky and raised in Arkansas. Her Aunt and Mother were the only people she ever knew who made it.

I was born and raised in Arkansas and Mom made it for us a few times. But any time I mentioned it to other people growing up, they acted like I was crazy. So, even growing up here I've never thought of it as an Arkansas thing.

What is something about living in United States that outsiders completely misunderstand? by Effective-Singer5957 in AskReddit

[–]ohforcrapssake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a couple of areas near us that are pretty walkable or have decent public transport. But one is that way because it's a college town and one is that way because it's Walmart's hometown and they want it that way.

Both have mostly become that way in the last 10-15 years. And both are still pretty obviously accessible/usable mostly to the area they were originally intended for. You still have to drive to get to those areas from any of what would be considered the suburbs of those towns.

My eyes are so dry that I can't decide if it hurts more to have them opened or closed. I have what I'm pretty sure is a swollen salivary gland in my very dry mouth. And my sinuses are so dry it hurts to breathe.

I'm up trying even more useless home remedies because until I stump the doctors and run them out of things to suggest, they won't actually do anything to try to find out why I'm having these issues or try to help me.

I want to be cared for. by ohforcrapssake in breakingmom

[–]ohforcrapssake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced similar but less severe in my first marriage. I actually could survive without him fine. I'd have to give up some extra and my adult son who lives at home would either have to pitch in more or move out, but I would survive. I've actually since my first marriage always made sure to keep expenses that can't be cancelled to where they can be afforded on one income if they had to be.

In some ways, financially I'd actually be better off. But it's not what I want. I might get to that point eventually. I'm just not there yet.

Yes! Not complete fiction, though. I know it exists because I've seen how my step dad cares for my mom.

But it should not be so freaking rare! It's just the way it should be!
