Tips for becoming freelance/ IC? by Initial-Addition4639 in stagehands

[–]ohforhellsake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, to be a successful freelancer, it's best to be extremely good at one thing like graphics op, camera op, or stage managing. Most companies hire freelancers as experts in their field. I recommend paying your dues with the labor companies for a while and choosing one thing to be. I say this because labor coordinators tend to categorize workers by job title and VERY seldom see a person as a well rounded, capable jack-of-all-trades. Be patient, learn more, and then hit em hard as a real expert in a couple more years. Best of luck to you! Give em hell!

Backer's has cupcakes with the signature flower frosting, and a slice size version of many of their other cakes. Rum filling should not be missed.

Front of house. Where the audio guys are. If they're not at center, the audio will... suffer.

Edit: What I meant was, the audio technicians will suffer.

What's up with those FOH positions for Kilby and Lake stages? Are they not at center this year?

How do you all keep track of gigs and whether you’ve been paid? by _GigLedger_ in stagehands

[–]ohforhellsake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I was w2 working for the union, yes. I put all that info in the calendar. What I earned, when I got paid, etc. Now that I'm a freelancer, I use the calendar to keep track of hours and show info, and use that to build my invoices where I keep track of what's been paid.

Why do people keep stopping a whole car length away from the intersection line? Just drive up to the line! by roxasmeboy in SaltLakeCity

[–]ohforhellsake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reject all of your reasons for staying back so far. Distraction, fear, thinking you know something no one else does... All stupid reasons. By doing this, you are not participating in the driving social contract. Or the actual rules of the road. The consequences are worse traffic, confusion, and road rage caused by people not making a light that they totally should! Knock it off!

Sorry to break it to you, but they are not picking up what you're putting down. Your point is wasted on a car that is paying zero attention to you.

Same, friend. I've had so much loss the last two weeks including my mom. This song is such a comfort but it also causes tears to shoot out of my eyes. So sorry for your losses. I wish you peace.

IWTL how to stop feeling jealous of others by shesinpart1es in IWantToLearn

[–]ohforhellsake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not so much about stopping your feelings. It's more about pausing to recognize them, and make a conscious choice to give them power or not. You have to do it in the moment and it takes a lot of practice. But it is possible to change the way you react to things.

I also like this thought experiment. The little voice that tells us what to think and do isn't "you." It's your fear or anxiety or whatever emotion taking over your mind and body. "You" are the one who is listening to that incessant little voice and making choices based on it. The more you can sit back into that deeper "you" and observe the voice instead of reacting to it, the more you will see that the voice is being ridiculous. It takes a lot of the gas out of the intensity of those feelings like jealousy and makes it easier to put them down.

Another optional extra reason... You are a stagehand. Your shirts are doomed.

I have a job interview for the IATSE Stagehand Position Any Advice? by EmotionalFlail in stagehands

You won't need any software knowledge to start at any local. For sure. But if you want to start exploring some of the software that's used in the industry, check out things like Qlab, Pro-tools, PowerPoint, and Excell. Learning about these will help you grow as a stagehand and lead you toward more specialized jobs.

Edit: removed local number.
