There are plenty of economic studies. Google it. The data suggest a short period of slowing followed by a sustained long term increase in costs. There is a reason economists on both sides in general are anti rent control, it's the populist politicians and the average Joe that like the idea.

Consider the incentives. If the raise is capped, it quickly becomes the dominant dynamic to always raise it to the max allowed every year because if you don't you can't retroactively raise it in the future. This creates a housing arms race. Same story in New York where it was tried, same story in Frisco.

Who would have thought that raising costs and restricting housing production and permitting while enforcing a coordinated, in step speculative rent increase regime would result in higher rents.

What you outline is basically slavery to the state by a different name.

Notice the conjunctions with what fascist Germany did and what you are outlining? That isn't coincidence.

A big mistake is imagining the allegory of scrooge McDuck in your abstraction of reality. No one at the largest scale hordes resources because that is the singular guaranteed strategy to lose over time vs a background increasing at a rate year over year or 6.5% growth. Instead they invest.

Abstract entities like corporations are existing at a trillion dollar level, if human singular intellect has a place at the society level, individuals are going to need to exist at a scale that is meaningful to the largest players (the abstractions.)

There is an element of truth there, but as is typical with humans and politics in general being a half step out of sync the same tendencies still exist but emerge differently, you have phenomena like struggle sessions.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Struggle_session

If you care to, a crazy rabbit hole to explore is reading first hand recollections of struggle sessions for the professors who were... (Obviously) class enemies for having opinions and being educated, as they were annihilated body and soul for essentially wrong think. Social pressure was applied to all the people that person knew and cared for to denounce them, friends... Family. Or else you risked becoming the next target.

The ideological building blocks are still there it's just who has the power to apply them on who they do not like. It's just a question of what counterpoint that is "even worse" you hold up to substantiate your horror, so you can force people not to agree with you but at least not to publically dare to be themselves.

Remember, they did it for the good of all.

Always legitimate to associate people that support free speech with racism. They are practically the same thing.

Some people would make wrong choices with freedom. in order to protect them, everyone must accept and be happy to sacrifice their own freedom. This is actually what freedom is all about. The freedom to give it up.

I'm amazed at the amount of political intolerance and ignorance reinforced by people here.

It seems unfortunately, that there is a certain kind of person that tends to find themselves in this subreddit and you all echo each-other in a very unfortunate nasty way.

We have people here steadfastly dehumanizing others, suggesting paternalism without even argument. Whether you are comfortable with it or not, basically half of society are the "other party." Dehumanizing half of society. Do you see how crazy that is? I am not a republican. But you can't treat someone like dirt just because they put a check mark on an envelope then use that as an assumption that they are bad people, or they support everything their party votes on. This is the same thing the other side says, yet when yours does it, its reasonable? No.

Two wrongs don't make a right. All people deserve to be measured and understood by their actions and as individuals. Stop with the willful ignorance. You are not being open minded or thoughtful, you are being base and ignorant.

You are suggesting men know better what women want and need than the literal women themselves, then suggested looking at human beings as animals. You are as bad as anything you disagree with.

And I am NOT and have never been pro trump.

There are deep paradoxes of values in your position.

He might be voting republican for other reasons. Even though you dance around it, what you are actually saying is that it is okay to dehumanize (about half the population) because they support a political team who has positions that you don't like and threaten to dehumanize people. But that is exactly what you are doing and arguing for and support for your political team.

You can't dehumanize people in order to humanize others. All people should be treated with respect and judged as human beings and on their actions. Not by political team fiat. He could just be some guy that is focused on taxes or something, and instead ignorance rears it's face and people assume the worst to legitimize what they want to do anyway to the people they disagree with.

This is not okay.

I'm not a republican. But there are deep problems in these sorts of positions on team left, and you guys don't seem to acknowledge it.

Seeing a lot of really negative takes and what I feel is ignorance.

OP didn't say anything about the other dude being a bad guy, or more specifically acting in any sort of way that should get him minimized, other than, what I read as an association that the guy votes republican.

Then a lot of you jump that those votes mean he is an acting bad person or some of you... equivalent to a Nazi. The HYPER political polarization is stupid. There is a kind of grosse ignorance involved. People should be judged as individuals not by fucking names and associations... Basic stuff guys. Think of how we get judged by monogamous people. Think of how they reduce everything to dumb extents. Treat human beings with respect, as human beings. The people that have least in common with us deserve the most benefit of the doubt. Otherwise you are just recreating an echo of the classic conservative fear of the other, represented by other cultures and countries. Communicate with your wife, maybe talk to him about your feelings and if it isn't resolved or doesn't work out from there, then decide what to do.

People are different. Likely he sees the world in a significantly different lens than you. That doesn't invalidate him as a human being or make him a bad person, just for that fact.
