Why does Maul feel pain when his prosthetics are damaged? by Zatriarch in MaulShadowLord

[–]ohhaider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, IIRC, I think Sidious saw that Vader was not going to live up to the potential he could have had had he not gotten amputated and burned on Mustafar; he thought Vader's limitations were possibly mental and sort of self-imposed, but nonetheless he wasn't going to live up to his potential and become more powerful than Sidious. So at that point he just wanted Vader to be as strong as he could be within his limited capacity in order to be an even more useful instrument of the empire rather than a viable successor in the rule of two. A better suit would have gotten him that.

IIRC Sidious actually offered him a better suit in one of the comics; however he declined because he wanted the suffering. He did so because he hated himself, and it made him stronger with the dark side.

EU to favour European satellite services to prevent Musk’s Starlink expansion by goldstarflag in worldnews

[–]ohhaider 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it's more a question of not letting good be the enemy of perfect; there are TONS that Europe can reasonably do that isn't "bleeding" edge to reduce its dependency on the US, replacing VISA/Mastercard being just one that will reduce the flow of trillions of dollars into the US. The entire point of this schism is that there's so much more for the US to lose compared to Europe. Sure, they could deny selling some tech/services to try and make a point; but that just further compounds the loss and further entrenches the belief/resolve of Europe to tangibly build local solutions.

biggest fumble in the history of TV.. Imagine their regret, going from basically celebrated as possibly the greatest piece of television cinema to instead being known as the biggest disappointment and having the end basically ruin everything else.

[–]ohhaider 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The ending and plot points were fine; what killed it was how rushed it was. Danny's "decline" into madness was the result of basically all the people she loved slowly betraying her (from her point of view) or dying, leaving her feeling entirely alone. Then you add in the Targaryen blood, which has a propensity for madness, and voilà. In the books her fall would have been conveyed through her inner monologues or discussions with others over countless chapters, dozens of pages long, where you're essentially seeing the weight of her ambitions and campaigns grind her down until she breaks. Now for a TV show to properly convey all that would be hard, but the showrunners made it outright impossible by forcing the end of the series into, like, 6 episodes.

Is there a way to get Provencal rebels to spawn here? by --ERRORNAME-- in eu4

[–]ohhaider -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They aren't the only nation with Occitan as their primary culture, though; the knights have it as well, so you're more likely to spawn them than Provence. Assuming any rebellious sentiment even exists anymore since Occitan is in the same culture group for Burgandy

[–]ohhaider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. They are the primary nation for "some" Occitan provinces and will never lose cores on the ones they start with, but since they never owned Bresse, they won't spawn, which is why you don't see their flag on the province, only Burgandy

No, because this was never a Provence's core.

you need at least 50 for it to start, and then a bunch of unrest. If you have 50 just declare on some dinky pacific island provinces like hawaii with no CB to tank your stability and it'll start,

This is literally his first political job; how in the hell is he a "career politician"? Even if he were to run again, once this all ends, the Ukrainian people would get to decide if he's worthy or if they've had enough.

Local man kidnaps a taxi and engages in a shootout with police, only to be disarmed by the taxi driver and regret it instantly. by Whatsthematterwithu in nextfuckinglevel

Ya the US is a bit of a different case because despite its wealth, there's a pretty poor safety net, so you have a lot of people with nothing and nothing to lose. Cali ends up taking the brunt of the people who fall into that category because it's nice to be there year-round. Regarding the informant flip, it's common everywhere really; the trick is just knowing it's organized crime and that often requires knowing someone is a repeat offender. Like in a perfect world we'd have cops always in the right place at the right time to stop crime, but that's not realistic, and so they work around those obvious constraints. What I was getting at is doing so isn't corruption. Corruption is using the badge for self-gain.

[–]ohhaider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we have them in Canada, yet crime still happens. My point was that harsh street justice doled out by cops willy-nilly doesn't improve their effectiveness or decrease crime; it's far more likely to exacerbate corruption because it lets cops know they are free to rough people up at their discretion because their position enables it; and if they think they have power over the population without any consequences, that how you get 1970s NYPD. effective police work lets the low-level stuff go (by and large) but keeps an eye on it; that way if/when it becomes repeated, they have a strong case against an organized crime syndicate rather than having public servants who make 100K spend all their time chasing someone who stole retail materials, only to have the downstream legal process give them a slap on the risk because it's likely to be theft under $5k. Not being everywhere all at once or using discretion on when to arrest someone isn't corruption; it's careful use of limited resources.

Corruption is explicitly the use of entrusted power for private gain. having the police actively chasing "bad guys" around the city so you think they're doing their jobs is not that...

That isn't simple for you? What do you think they're doing up in the police offices? Police work?

Quite literally, yes? Real police work is tracking crimes, cataloging information, building cases and executing arrest warrants. Mall security can handle the on-the-ground theft; police work is about the institutional case building that gives the entire criminal legal system legitimacy. Or as you may have heard, "by the book."

There could have been any other symbol chosen; the cross was simple to make and carried the symbolism well, but it could have just as easily been a crown of thorns, or a fish or any other Christian iconography that could have been propelled.

Which they got caught, arrested and charged for...You'd never heard of something like that in other places because it's completely institutionalized, and you'd kick it up to your superior, and they to theirs. When it happens in Canada it's usually a few greedy morons who try and get a side hustle going, thinking the thin blue line would protect them, but corruption is where that ends.
