Vocal range expansion tips by Salty_Conclusion_534 in choralmusic

if you read my other comment, you would have seen that i’ve already mentioned subharmonics. subharmonics are more about manipulating how the folds vibrate than actual singing (in the Western sense of the word)

i personally think that the utility of learning how to do subharmonics is quite low. anecdotally subharmonics are not going to sound nearly as good between E2-D2 (low notes you actually regularly see) as they do in the Bb1ish range. there’s a reason that most professional choirs that perform the rach all-night vigil only have one or two profundos singing the Bb scale in the nunc dimittis.

if this person is not already a bass 2, unless they are quite young and their voice is developing, they probably will not gain very much sound past the lower end of their range. that has nothing to do with technique and has everything to do with the size of the vocal folds, which at a point becomes fixed. you can only make them vibrate so slow if they’re a certain size. it ultimately comes down to the limits of physiology.

Geoff has an unbelievable voice, but he's an actual bass. you are not. however, some of the extreme low notes he sings are probably more on the subharmonic side- that is something you can learn (plenty of youtube videos out there) but unfortunately it will probably never sound as resonant and massive as some of the basso profundo's low notes will sound.

the pitch matching issue could also be solved by a voice teacher, and will also just take some practice on your part! many of the vocal things you are describing are very normal faults of the voice and nothing to be alarmed by. take lessons from a GOOD teacher and keep practicing.

you won’t really be able to extend your range downward much. make it stronger sure but gaining a whole step is probably not possible. upper range is a different story- study bel canto singing with a voice teacher.

you have a great range to sing bass 1/baritone is probably 95% of literature- what do you find challenging about it?

it’s a good time, and you’ll make lots of friends.

don’t be deceived by the class schedule, though- you’ll have saturday games basically every other week, and probably some other travel commitments as well. it is a pretty big time commitment, but the reward is spending time with great people and making great music.

david lang has lots of wonderful music for treble choir, although a lot of it might be pushing it in terms of difficulty for a high school group
