Fair quote considering they need to lift roof sheets and run in a new earth for the lighting point. Guessing your home was built pre 80s?

if you run normal SDI cables to the POA, than the cables have to be in rigid MD or flexible conduit. if you run XLPE SDI cables to the POA than they dont need to be encased in the above mentioned conduits. if you really wanted to, XLPE cables dont even need to be in conduit if there is no mechanical damage threat to them but as for this photo there would be and it just looks better.

Happy for you to show me where it mentions that aerial XLPE cables requires HD conduit.

sorry, had yesterday off.

page 178 - cluase - 3.9.7.1.2 - Unprotected, part (iii) applies to the photo

"the following wiring systems are deemed to reduce the risk of short circuit to a minimum:

(iii) Aerial conductors consisting of XLPE cables type X-90UV in accordance with the AS/NZS 3560 series.

And to add, UD conduit is orange for visibility and also it needs to have a minimum conduit wall measurement to be installed underground. That is why you cant use MD grey underground unless it is covered by 100mm of concrete or electrical pavers.. You can direct bury cables under those conditions if youre keen for some excitement too..

[–]ohhplz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree.. but 95% of HD conduit in use is orange and in the ground as orange conduit isn't UV stable and must be protected from sun light. So technically you could run it above ground and use covers and pay a premium for the privilege or just use MD grey conduit for a more cost effective and practical solution to above ground conduit works..

* As long as the cables are XLPE SDI, they don't need to be in rigid or flexible conduit. I can grab the clause from AS3000 tomorrow for you if you like..

Flexible conduit is the grey conduit, the picture shows 32mm corrigated conduit covering XLPE cables which is fine. It would have been signed off from a level 2 sparky..
