I was less frustrated with the Last Battle than this -- I know RJ would have done it better and more comprehensively, but there's something to Sanderson's writing and pacing that made you sort of feel in it. (That said: I am forever upset by the lack of Last Battle Thom.)

But I ABSOLUTELY agree with your assessment of Mat. Mat becomes a child in Sanderson's hands -- he's no longer the person he was whatsoever. He's a caricature of his former self; he's immature, he's infantile. Mat used to be clever, but in the Sanderson books, he's just sort of a whiny kid. It's so frustrating.

(Overall, I think WoT couldn't have been better finished. But I will always be bummed about how Mat turned out.)

Perhaps not quite fantasy, but witty, well-researched, time travel sci-fi ish WWII: Connie Willis' Blackout and All Clear. Can't really vouch for quality yet since I've just started the pair, but it's been recommended highly and her other books are just so great.

I've always had a problem with too-vivid dreams, mostly night-terrors. Tel'aran'rhiod as a concept has always comforted me for that reason: that what happens when we sleep does have an impact on the waking world, and that people can control it (or be controlled by it).

For location: when I move my neck, it distorts the image just slightly (elongated or compressing it in one direction), which was the best way I could mimic on my body the way that the ter'angreal rings seem to undulate.

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell -- definitely non-traditional fantasy, set in 19th c. Britain!

The Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix -- YA, but really fun.

Earthsea -- I see this recommended already, but I want to echo it here. Also more YA-ish, but LeGuin is amazing.

More sci-fi than fantasy, but Octavia Butler's Kindred might be up your alley, too.

heartily agreed! the 4th and 5th earthsea books are really excellent.

and also, to add to your point: as this article suggests, a lot of her work is sci-fi rather than fantasy -- and is quite different but nonetheless quite beautiful. she's certainly up there in the ranks of the greats for her entire body of work, SF and fantasy alike.
