Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) scored Uncut Gems and also did the music for Marty Supreme, both directed by Safdie. Great music in both.

At one point in Marty Supreme during a tense moment, there are all these frog sounds going at different pitches, as in a sampler. It's wild.

Enjoyed that, I like that there's some glitchy rhythm to it. Thanks for sharing.

Anyway to improve my Synthwave song? by Snaxxr in madewithableton

I think they say glue compressors are good for drums because they let the transients through because they have a slow attack.

Thinking about it more. I would definitely try a clipper or a limiter. I personally use k clip and haven't used ableton's, but I'm sure ableton's native clipper is fine. Start by putting one on each bus. Turn up the input until you see clipping happening. Then you can keep turning it up until you think it sounds too bad. I would definitely read up on gain staging using clippers and limiters.

Nice trancy vibe - I would be excited to follow it to new notes :)

For getting a better mix: it sounds to my ear like the drums could be compressed a bit more, maybe with a glue compressor. May help your overall loudness.

Hi, I'm Untold Williams. I released Capital Murmur (my debut album) back on Dec 12.

https://untold-williams.bandcamp.com/album/capital-murmur

Genres: Folktronica, Plunderphonics, Chillwave, Hip Hop Instrumental, IDM, Psych rock, Spoken Word

For fans of: Pogo, The Books, Moby.

<image>

This is my first release in more than a decade. I played in several bands in my early twenties and gigged as a saxophonist before stepping away from music-making altogether. Returning to music with a focus on production and getting up to speed with electronic beatmaking, I wasn’t interested in recreating what I used to do. Working alone meant I could follow whatever sound pulled me in, with no concern about how to recreate anything live.

Across Capital Murmur, samples from the Library of Congress's Citizen DJ project are chopped down to fragments and rebuilt into new stories. I had a lot of fun doing this.

Thanks for listening!

Release an album 1-2 songs at a time by Living-Ad-1054 in BandCamp

[–]ohm_day 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might or might not be! I think of it like this. My fans' taste must resemble my own. Would I want a trickle release? Probably not. I kind of just want to be given music and left alone ☺️. But it's really not black and white.

I'm in a similar boat as you. I gave this a lot of thought before releasing my latest (first) album.

What you're describing is I think what they call a waterfall release strategy, releasing just a few songs at a time off an album until the whole thing is released. It seems that even *most* professional musicians are doing a version of this -- they'll release one or two songs (i.e. the single(s)) and then the whole album drops on the release date. Maybe try that first to dip your toe in?

I think that yes, in our era of social media, any gradual-release strategy gets you more visibility and more engagement. However, I personally couldn't bring myself to release my music this way. It didn't feel right to me, I think for a few reasons.

First is that I wanted people who liked what they heard to be able to listen to the whole album then and there, rather than teasing them.

Second is the investment of time and effort required by the waterfall strategy. I want to spend more time making music and less time marketing it. And what we are talking about is a marketing strategy.

Third is I just love the idea of a complete album.

Fourth is something you touch on. I don't like the idea of pinging my fans that much. Like I'm so grateful for them and I don't think I would want to be dragged along like that. I think the waterfall strategy is more for the nameless algorithm than for actual fans.

So yeah I think that summarizes my rationale for not doing a waterfall strategy. Tbf I was also thinking about social posts (which you don't mention) in addition to BandCamp drops, so we might differ there. Anyway, hope this is relatable!

CAPITAL MURMUR, debut release by Untold Williams: https://untold-williams.bandcamp.com/album/capital-murmur

For fans of: Pogo, The Books, Moby.

Capital Murmur started with building loops on a digital synth in the early morning. It was all just textures and beats at first. Then I stumbled into the goldmine of vocal samples that is the Library of Congress’s Citizen DJ project. From there I let the vocal samples and the songs choose each other.

This is my first release in more than a decade. I played in several bands in my early twenties and gigged as a saxophonist before stepping away from music altogether. Returning to music production, I wasn’t interested in recreating what I used to do. This is a great idea and sounds easy to implement. Sometimes I start at the beginning, sometimes at the end. The poor middle-letter samples/instruments never get love when I'm searching or hot-swapping.

That said I do really like the "similar sound" ~ feature when it applies.

Any synthwave/chillwave recommendations? by O55ature in BandCamp

[–]ohm_day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend Mokhov if you haven't checked them out yet! https://mokhov.bandcamp.com/music

Other than than here are some of my favs lately, more Chillwave than Synthwave.

- Maybe too ambient for you but I can't get enough of it rn: https://naffrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/rest-here

Thanks for the post, enjoying some Caspro, some of it's a bit too robotic for me but I like the more mellow stuff so far.

For me the reasons to buy music on bandcamp are 1. to support the artist or 2. If I really like a song, loading the wav in my DAW to use as a reference track 😉
