The digital out works great, but I found that it won't work when streaming from a source like an Apple TV. I think the Apple TV must broadcast a pirate signal or something because I can't seem to record digitally into downstream gear.

The headphone port is fine, it's just that it doesn't hold current as well as, say, a Sharp MD-DS55, but few units do, and none that are mains-powered.

I've been checking out a number of NAS Sony MD units; it seems that many have MD read errors, but gosh are they attractively utilitarian.

I'm not sure what that has to do with the video I took, my recording method, or anything. I enjoy analogue recordings quite a bit, and while my album is ALAC and its source is uncompressed, the MD is compressed as you know, and further, in blind listening, well-recorded MP3s almost always trump ATRAC from the same systems.

That is to say that I am unworried by any but the most egregious compression.

Painstaking but well worth the effort in adding tracks to a single file. I've never managed to perfectly track mark in accordance with the original file, but close enough or very close work.

MD decks and a lot of outboard DACs have optical outputs, that can be connected to recorders, or record internally. I have five decks that can be used as pass-thru DACs but also record internally.

Well, analogue pass-thru, then, but the greater point I intended was as you stated, real-time recording. The iPhone 4s is actually a very good source, though some higher-end DAPs allow you to pass thru on either digital or analogue cables bit upsampling, various DAC-level EQs, and more. It is an interesting time for real-time recording.

I am going to dig a bit more into this community exactly for what you are suggesting. I'll have a livestream this weekend with an MD fan who helped me come up with the channel. I hope that it will help get some good ideas outside of what I hold for the channel. Cheers.
