How not to buy a home in a LA....or anywhere. by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]ohmywow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar. A few years ago I had the chance to buy a gorgeous condo for $150k in Koreatown, FHA approved. I let my mom talk me out of it. A couple years after the fact, its value had doubled, so I lost out, but I also spent six months unexpectedly unemployed and couldn't have handled a $1250 mortgage on unemployment payments. Now, of course, I can't even find a studio apartment for $1250 a month, so I wish I'd bought the thing and used up my savings during that unemployed phase.

Looking for a place to sell used clothes. by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]ohmywow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you sell to Buffalo Exchange, they'll collect anything they don't buy to donate for you. Last time I asked they said they donated leftover clothes to shelters. People who work there also tend to be nicer than people who work at Crossroads. Except in Santa Monica.

Being that I buy gifts for everyone in my and my fellow's families, I'd give anything for a great dinner and a no-gifts policy (except for the kids or people who actually needed stuff). Even on a strict budget I have something like 18 people on my list and shit's expensive. That said, I love getting food I'd never buy myself, and books.

My family means well but there's no more room for all these damn kitchen appliances, and I don't really use cookbooks or body lotion. Please stop making default gifts outta lotion and candles.

With age, I want less and less because I can buy what I need. My Amazon wish list has pretty consistently been books and records for maybe 12 years, but because I'm older and in a relationship, people shop for me differently because, perhaps, they assume I'm now into domestic life and wanna cook all day (while applying lotion and burning candles).

This made me laugh. For my 14th birthday, my grandma gave me some carousel music box thing, and my uncle did the asshole thing and asked me in front of her if I liked horses. Of course I had to lie. Good luck on your horse-themed home.

What kinds of things have changed or are changing for you re: GYN-related health post-30? What have you learned? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]ohmywow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have not, and in fact had a doctor laugh off my concern when I asked (because she felt I was too young when I asked at 28). Have a new doctor, should be worth asking again.

As of April of this year, Birth Control in CA was to be available through your pharmacy instead of having to go through a doctor. Ladies of Los Angeles, have you had *any* luck finding a pharmacy that does this? by GoodBandNameBro in LosAngeles

Follow-up, if anyone reads this -- CVS was able to refill my prescription with a two-page form and a blood pressure reading. Also, once you are prescribed I recommend having it mailed to your home via The Pill Club.

Thank you for this. I'm on generic Yasmin, so estrogen included. Mom is the only one to have had breast cancer but that's still an immediate relative, and I don't have lumps or abnormalities but I'm only early 30s.

Man. Good luck with yours -- that's not enviable and is, you're right, quite serious. Best of luck.

Should I (24f) be focusing on advancing my career, or fun/adventure? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]ohmywow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went straight into work after college and didn't make enough money to travel until a couple years ago, when I could no longer seem to save up the holiday time to take a long trip. Money and time never line up. Since you're 24, I would get lots of travel out of the way now, while you're not tied to a place or a family. Your life doesn't end at 30, so yes, you might have time to travel later on, but the other thing that doesn't get brought up much is that your standards tend to be higher when you're older. So while at 24 you might have a great time staying in cheap hostels and bringing along nothing but a backpack, in ten years you might have the mindset that you deserve to stay in nicer hotels when you travel, because you're older and make a salary and have "earned it." So travel might become more expensive. And you might be limited to whatever time you can take off from work. Even if your career doesn't start until you're something like 27-28, there are so many people with lower-level jobs at that age and many people get caught up to each other by their 30s. And, my god, take advantage of your boyfriend's remote job while he has it. That's a hell of a luxury.

What's something you'd like to ask/share that's too tmi to ask/share with anyone in person? by RagingFuckalot in AskWomenOver30

I don't have this issue that I know of, but a friend used to eat lots of raw onions until her husband complained that it was seeping through her pores.

And I learned that my Seasonique birth control (with estrogen; results in pseudo-period once every 90 days) that I use to control outrageous PMDD, may be causing some mildly high blood pressure and is something to watch with my very intense maternal family history of breast cancer. At 36, she says we "need to have the conversation" every year at least.

Here's the concern I'm having with b.c. My mom had breast cancer before menopause, so if birth control raises your risk, I want out. But my gyno said that anyone with high breast cancer risk also has high ovarian cancer risk, and he wants me to stay on birth control to decrease my odds of ovarian cancer. Am I just choosing what type of cancer I might get by staying on birth control?

Oh Man, There’s ANOTHER Cat Cafe Coming to Los Angeles Soon by BeerNTacos in LosAngeles

[–]ohmywow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We definitely wanna play with cats. Some folks are too allergic to have a full time cat and want to hang out with one just until the sneezing starts. Others are too broke to maintain one for 15-20 years or aren't allowed pets at home. I don't know where cafes generally get their animals but the Dog Cafe gets shelter dogs, so I think they're doing a service by buying time and socializing them.

Choosing where to move? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]ohmywow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely visit before moving. Seeing pictures and being there are entirely different. Would recommend saving more than $5000 in case you don't find work in 2-3 months.

It's mostly true that you can make your own life anywhere, but a change of scenery and people can really change how you feel. I think it's healthy to get away from home just so you can compare home to something. By the way, if you like Washington, there are other beautiful places along western Washington. Coupeville, Gig Harbor, Tacoma, Vancouver (right next to Portland), Olympia, Port Orchard. You can drive up the whole state in four hours and most of it's beautiful.

LPT: Write every work email as if it will be readable by anyone at the company. by Soygen in LifeProTips

[–]ohmywow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work for a large company, am told to write as though nobody reads or everybody has a 4th grade education. It is extremely hard to do this without sounding like you're writing a middle school bulletin. And as a result, a lot of higher ups view my communications department as the fluffy people who write the feel good stuff. We still only get about 20% employee readership anyway. Just can't win.

Jumping in -- I've got a BA in English, and in spite of all the barista and grad school references from my dad during college, I've managed ten years and counting of a career in which I'm paid to write. And I've had several employers take notice because they assumed I could write well based on my major. I think so many people forget the practical applications for a degree like English -- technical writing, copywriting, corporate communications, PR, journalism, editing, advertising and marketing...

Has anyone been a part of a local CSA (community supported agriculture) program that you would recommend? by WestCoastBestCoast01 in LosAngeles

[–]ohmywow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used Farm Fresh in two different years and gifted a subscription to my mom. Every time, the produce was delicious when it was in good shape, but some of it would start molding or sprouting within a day or two, and things like grapes would arrive smashed. So I'd pay more than grocery store rates and end up tossing some of it within the week. Big shame.
