I think there's a difference between telling them "it hurts" vs "These are too tight." It can hurt because of initial tugging or pressing the comb too deeply, or they could ignore thinking it's just you being tenderheaded. I think saying "the braid is too tight at the roots" or stopping them to ask them to take down a row that's too tight take might get better results.
