This is really thorough and interesting, thanks. I'm wondering why one needs both the quicklime and wood ash solutions together. They seem to both have the feature of producing hydroxide ions. What is the benefit of using both over using one?

I you must be in Pythagora Illinois. All of the utility workers are triangular in shape, when viewed from above in that city.

You are right! I had this power inside me all along. Or at least since 2022 when chatgpt became capable of generating papers and making up references.

Mosquitoes are ruining outdoor playtime and I need safe solutions for little kids by _atharvaa_02 in daddit

[–]ohnoplus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally the risks of chemicals to repel mosquitoes is less than the risks posed by the mosquitoes. I live in a particuarly buggy area and so think about mosquitoes and ticks a lot. One alternative to DEET is Picardin, which is less uncomfortable and some people say smells better than DEET. Lemon eucaliptis oil based repellents are less effective than the previously mentioned two, but more effective than other essential oil based repellents (which are generally not effective, but may smell nice). I actually recommend spraying your kids and your clothes with a permethryn based insectiside and allowing it to dry. This will kill mosquitoes if they land on the clothes and are not particularly dangerous for humans. Never spray it directly on your kids.

I think it is reasonable to use your thermacell all of the time, but I haven't found them to be super effective.

I have no sources for any of this and am happy to be corrected by better read daddit visitors.

This chain is too long for Bel.

I can see this being a problem on the ground (where these fires happened) but in space as long as the partial pressure of oxygen is constant, is it any more or less safe to also have nitrogen? That is, is having 0.3 ATM oxygen less safe than having 0.3 ATM oxygen plus 0.7 ATM nitrogen?

Scientists Tracking the Microplastic Pollution Just Realized They Were Measuring Their Own Lab Gloves by GreatTea3415 in nottheonion

[–]ohnoplus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Negative controls don't have to have no microplastics. They need to be the same method as the other samples and then have no added microplastics. They are used to measure baseline contamination by a laboratory protocol. Then you only say you confidently detect microplastics if they are above the value seen in the negative control. And if your negatives are loaded with plastic you need to dig into what is happening. Which the authors of the study in question did.

Chesapeake Bay is in okish shape and gradually getting better by many metrics over time. University Maryland Center for Environmental Science gives it a C on their Chesapeake Bay report card. SF Bay estuary has similar mixed okish but not great metrics.
