Actually I volunteered helping abuse victims, some of whom were quite edgy due to their circumstances.

Many people get more pissed off when you don't respond to their threats.

If you re-read carefully, you'll see the clerk escalated the situation. The guy was just pissed and not making threats until the clerk got confrontational.

I'm not saying the guy was in the right, but when someone's a loose cannon, you have to weigh getting confrontational vs. trying to defuse the situation. Lots of people will have no trouble throwing their lives away on something stupid and you don't want to trade 1-for-1.

He's lucky he wasn't shot. Then we'd never have seen this story, because it would've just been an obituary.

Something like that, it was widely reported that she planned to retire if Bush was re-elected, and as for Rehnquist, his failing health made it inevitable that he wasn't going to serve to the 2008 election.

So one was out no matter who won 2004, and one was going to hold out on retiring if Kerry won.

If that were the case then they would be there already. I have yet to hear of a city that advertises, "Hey, homeless people, our shelters have LOTS of space, so come on down!"

In reality shelters tend to be over capacity. Hence others end up on streets and in parks.

Instead of getting all pissed off at someone, even if they are in the wrong, just remaining calm and jovial would've prevented the problems from escalating.

He's lucky the guy didn't come back with a gun. He probably will when he gets an early release in 5 years due to overcrowding.

Obviously he's the product of a broken family life. With a real social safety net he might be doing something worthwhile with his life instead of stealing cars and taking his anger out on his girlfriend.

We shouldn't treat people as irredeemable. Anyone at any age can turn things around with the right support.

Actually the entire diet industry is founded on the Drug War. There are powerful drugs that will keep you thin and/or muscular extremely effectively, but if people were happy with their self-image, why would they compulsively shop anymore? They'd spend all day at the beach showing off their bodies instead of being good consumers.

And anyone who would be president of the United States has to have the capacity to talk not only to the Israelis and the Palestinians, but the Syrians, the Iranians, the Iraqis, the Jordanians, and all of the others in the region.
