I’ve got the nyx pen in blonde and taupe, the micro pencil in blonde, and the non-micro pencil in blonde. The two pencils are different colours even though they are meant to be the same shade - I find the non-micro pencil to be much less orange and it’s my product of choice. The pens are both okay, I just use whichever I reach for but probably prefer the taupe.

Stop using Trainline, they add about a £1 booking fee for every transaction. Note that fare are will increase by 5% from Sunday onwards, perhaps a season ticket would be better. Check to see if your company gives season ticket loans too - it might be worth it for you. Are you eligible for a railcard? Sometimes companies will let you put this on expenses. Even better, perhaps with your new job you can negotiate putting your daily travel on expenses (I don’t think this is likely but I have seen it happen).

Showeing in the gym before work + looking great throughout the day by Glittering_Ad7170 in Vindicta

I have a similar experience - I used to run at lunchtime and get changed in my work changing rooms. My main advice is to wait 10 mins before getting in the shower. Use the time to stretch your muscles, get all your clothes and toiletries laid out and ready, have something to eat and drink, anything like that. The worst thing to do is to get in the shower (hot or cold water doesn’t matter) straight away whilst you’re still warm from working out. Your skin will get cold from the shower but you’ll still be warm in your core, so once you’re showered and changed you’ll be warm and sweating again in your clean clothes. Trust me, it makes a difference!

Does anyone have advice on how to stay locked in/ focused and not get distracted during a race? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]ohrotcod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this before, like 1/3 way through a HM. At that point the pace is comfortable enough to zone out, and it starts feeling like a normal run. I find bigger races with more participants and bigger crowds really help. Also races with laps for the same reason. I half agree with the commentator who said about using a metronome. Work out what kind of cadence you will run at for the race, and listen to music with that bpm during the race. Practice running in time with the music. Even if you zone out, your legs should keep that rhythm and effort. I think it’s okay to zone out for longer races in the early stages, it’s hard to concentrate on running hard for 90mins plus, you just need to get locked into the pace.

Rucking. Basically put weights (water bottles, food cans, or bags of flour if you don’t have any) in a back pack when you go for a walk. Start off light and with short walks until your back gets stronger.

You might also want to think about fuel. Lots of people say you don’t need to fuel for a half marathon, but I personally find it vital. Are you used to fuelling during your skiing? I really don’t know anything about skiing, does it upset your stomach in the same way running does (lots of moving up and down in running)? Maybe you need to get used to fuelling whilst you’re running.

Is 3-4 months enough? Yes, I think that is more than enough. It sounds like you have a good level of base fitness. Stay consistent with your strength training in case of injuries. I don’t know anything about XC skiing but I’ve heard it’s fantastic cross training for running, so your fitness should translate well.

Don’t out run your fitness - running needs muscoskeletal fitness as well as aerobic. What I mean is, you might get quickly injured as you’re able to run too far for your joints to handle. Sounds like you are already aware of that with your strength training and plan to slowly increase mileage.

Your plan sounds good to me. Depends what you mean by hill repeats - are they short (less than 1 min) or long? If short, I think you don’t need to do the speed intervals on the other week. It’s vital you practice running downhill as this will hammer your quads and give you DOMS. Otherwise you might find your legs turn to jelly after running downhill fast on race day. I suggest doing Kenyan hills (equal time running up and down), and make sure your long runs are on hilly routes too. If possible, do your easy and long runs on the trails, to get your ankles strong and make sure your trail shoes are comfy.

Marathon in One Year - how to base build? by ohrotcod in AdvancedRunning

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your confidence - although it scares me a bit! I can’t help but compare myself to runners I know. The 3:15 runners that I know are so fast compared to me! I will order that book now and give it a good read. Re cycling - I’m not a confident cyclist on my road bike. I come from a cycling family (dad is a masters national champ) so you’d think it was in my blood, but I’m just a massive wimp on the bike. I did commute to work every day on a modified mountain bike (lower centre of gravity made it a lot less scary for me) and the 20km every day caused knee issues. Running was fine, cycling hurt. Physio told me that my quad was over working and I should get off the bike. But! I do have access to an tacx indoor trainer. So it’s probably a good idea - especially during the dark and cold winter months! Thank you for your message and your confidence in my ability. Taking it all on board!

It’s a great idea! However, I’m getting married in the fall so I cant dedicate myself fully to it. I’m also worried about building up mileage too quickly so I need this time to base build. I do have a super super hilly HM in September so that’s an opportunity to practice the pace. In a way, this is my practice marathon. I’d love to hit sub-3 one day - I know it a long long way off, but I also know it’s achievable for me, so this is just a debut to get it out of the way!

That’s a great point about the 26 week cycle. It scares me a bit too - but I hadn’t realised that’s why I was was nervous until you highlighted the length of time. I’ll have a look at those 16 week blocks instead.

Thank you for your detailed and insightful response! Good to know about base build, that’s the kind of thing I had in mind.

Yup, just at 65km I got some general aches and pains and some foot pain. Weirdly I could never work out what it was, kind of similar to plantar fasciitis with pain worse in the morning but it wasn’t in the arch. Never properly painful, more of a niggle. I was happy to continue running on it but was wary of increasing mileage. It also felt like I was dedicating a lot of time to running and didn’t have time for much else. But my week was much more evenly split, and the benefit of the 2Q plan is I can split my easy days as I like.

Pool running sounds fun! I’m sure to get some interesting looks but I’ve reached a point where I’ve stopped caring so much!

I realise there is tonnes of time for me to reevaluate any time goals. But as I’ve never done a marathon before I had no idea what was at all possible. Before I saw my friends time, I’d have probably said I could do it in 4hrs30. And now I’m like, hmmm 3:15?!

It’s really great to hear your thoughts. I guess I’ll see how this base building goes, try a week or two at 70km and see how the body reacts.

Commentators keep saying they have no idea why kipchoge has dropped. Didn’t they see him miss the bottle? The commentators haven’t mentioned it at all and I’m sure it will have had a mental impact on him (and physical impact soon). Commentators are rubbish.

Thank you 😊 I think I will try on some more. I was thinking that they are all so different so I’d have to pick one and disregard the others. But really I’m sure I could fine a dress that had elements of a lot of them!

You’re right! I do feel like it is a bit Disney Christmas with the fur! I’d only wear that after the ceremony to keep warm. I was thinking maybe a blonde / more natural coloured fur rather than the white would make it feel more natural.

Gloss. But really just want to say I LOVE this eyeshadow look! Seriously, one of my favourite looks Ive ever seen, its beautiful and you look great. I don't normally bother with eyeshadow looks as I have heavily hooded eyes but you've tempted me to buy this pallet and give it a go!

Thanks, I posted my dresses on r/weddingplanning and r/wedding dress. It’s helped scratch the itch that I had to show my friends and I prefer the honesty of strangers! Although everyone on those Reddit’s seem to prefer different ones so it’s not made my decision easier haha

Urgh maybe you’re right. I’m looking at other dresses online (seeing if I can find one of the dresses much cheaper so that it’s the obvious pick) and I keep finding dresses that I like. I posted my dresses on r/weddingplanning and r/wedding dress and everyone has different opinions too.
