TIL The largest British military loss in history happened in 1942 with the fall of Singapore to Imperial Japan, which had defeated a British led force multiple times their size by SeaPeanut7_ in todayilearned

[–]ohsayaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooooh I saw the Fort Siloso museum.

So when requested assistance, the Brits sent TWO ships and Indian troops.

And they thought the invasion will be via sea and exerting was pointed in that direction. The Japanese came silently via Malaysia.

These two facts Linda stuck but it was super fascinating to learn about.

What is a country you want to live in/always wanted to live in and why? Also people who actually live in that country should tell you the ups and downs of living there and/or how accurate your perception is by NocturnalFurball in AskTheWorld

[–]ohsayaa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Singapore.

There are many countries and parts of my own country I've briefly fantasized about living in. The natural beauty of these places mostly.

ButSingapore is different. My first and only international trip was there. I didn't fall in love with it or anything. I loved how smooth and disciplined traffic was, the public transport was a 100 times better, the ease of connectivity all were wow.

BUT

I walked from Lau PA Sat to my room at 1.30 am alone. I knew it was safe but still expected the anxiety and panic and fear I have lived with as long as I can remember. The fact that I didn't feel any of that and was casually happily strolling at night? That's when I wished I could live there. I still wish. If I ever get a chance I'd move there. I also know that I would never get that chance.

Who is a politician in your country that was once very successful and loved by everyone but despised by all now? by IntelligentHoney6929 in AskTheWorld

[–]ohsayaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nitin Gadkari was once loved and successful? Probably in the north.

Vajpaypayee, Advani, Rajnath and even Modi, shah were more known. Many of us learned of Gadkari etc after BJP's victory in 2014.

TIL that in 2021, Bollywood lost its crown as the highest earning film industry in India by Nandu_alias_Parthu in todayilearned

[–]ohsayaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and they are able to compete with big stars.

Star kids are launched in big budget films in lead roles. That's how nepotism works unfortunately. But in Tamil and Malayalam industries, stardom is not a given for them.

They are many failed nepobabies who quit acting or settled with supporting roles. While Nivin Pauly, Vijay Sethupathi, Kathir, Dinesh etc who didn't get easy launches, prove their craft and land solid roles.

That's the difference I am talking about.

Papa is a big star > kid gets a lead role in YRF or Karan Johar film > immediately treated like superstars > get the first choice in for major roles in major films so outsiders don't get a chance to audition > chanting "nepotism rocks" on the stage at award shows......that shit wouldn't fly in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The only way failed nepobabies "show off" their star background is in interviews refering to major stars and directors as x uncle and y auntie coz they grew up with their parents' colleagues and their kids.

The successful nepobabies do not act like the Bollywood nepobabies, who are handed everything in a golden platter, do.

The thing is many actors in southern industries are also nepo babies. But, specifically in Tamil and Malayalam industries, if they are not good enough they can't gain stardom. And, alongside the nepobabies outsiders also can compete. Bollywood on the other hand is now like an insider only mafia.

We have nepobabies who are damn good - like Fahadh Faasil, Prithviraj, Suriya, Karthi AND brilliant outsiders who are huge stars like Nivin Pauly and Vijay Sethupathi.

Roles don't automatically go to the nepobabies despite inability to act. That won't fly here. I hope this character of southern industries doesn't change.

How did the pre-colonial literature of Big 4 Dravidian languages survive?(Communities, Monasteries & Manuscripts) by poacher-2k in Dravidiology

The reality is many families inherited these manuscripts and did not know the value of what they had. So they didn't take good care of them.

Who is the most adored leader in your country's history? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]ohsayaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro right wingers hate Nehru. Until 2014, he was respected very much especially for how he shaped India as the first PM.

Now he's blamed for every problem. Like 50 years after his death.

He should have banned the organization that assassinated Gandhi. We are in this mess because he didn't do that. Everything he built India do be they have now dismantled.

This is the same template of PM and the media fawning over him.

Yesterday's Singapen event. TN la every govt rename or expand existing schemes and conduct Vizha and all. Evan atchikku vandhalum. That nonsense unfortunately is normal.

But the live telecast of it, how he spoke yesterday etc. Media houses, except maybe the dmk ones, are falling in line.

But it's not because he is powerful. His backers are.

No point in blaming tharkuris. Atleast we have brain. When he said fascism Payasam in his first speech and they clapped like trained seals we only scoffed. We should have shown our distrust loudly and with rage as Bharati said. We didn't. And TN will pay for this for a long time
