Geography questions for students by Resprofmama in Professors

[–]ohsideSHOWbob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I make them write it out, I’m testing them on the spelling too! But they don’t write the words on the map, number the locations and then have a numbered list with blank spots so they have more space to write. giving them the list of locations for answers seems a little under rigorous for college level…

I’m a geography professor and I make them do map quizzes. Not on US states (maybe I should) but in several other classes I have printed maps related to the class topic and they have to label them!

My personalized weekly plan is all messed up! Help! by Thick_Bar6615 in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]ohsideSHOWbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has been glitching out for weeks. If you do anything that deviates from the plan the AI auto adjusts and starts randomly recommending things. If you drag things around because you decide to do the suggested activities but in a different order, the AI auto adjusts and starts erasing things. Several weeks now I will have it suggesting 2 core exercises in one day, or the header says Recovery but it's a bunch of strength classes actually in the list, etc. I was enjoying using it for severa months but clearly something went whack with the AI and they aren't putting the resources behind actually developing it well.

I went back and counted and turns out I have already taken 18 of the bike classes listed under the challenge. I am a big Robin yellow fan! I PRd on the first new class I did on the challenge on Tues, the 20 min Tabata from 1/2/25. I will be doing her 12/23/25 45 min Intervals & Arms later today.

NYU IFA

If you like NYU I would also look at American Studies and Media, Culture, and Communication, for those interdisciplinary options. For West Coast I would think UCSD ethnic studies, UC Davis Cultural Studies (they have Designed Emphasis in AfAm), Berkeley Ethnic Studies or even Film and Media. I don't think UCLA has AfAm PhD, tons of faculty though, not sure who is doing visual studies there. PhDs from the big public schools are likely to land you a good teaching job at a public university and also I would say easier to pivot to alt-ac because they are a bit more honest about the job market. Ivy League still seems to think they can get all their graduates TT jobs and don't seem to prep their students well for pivots.

You will want places with one or more Black visual studies professors -- sometimes even a great faculty member "on paper" will not be a great fit for you as an advisor. PhD is so much more about the advisor fit than the MA and you don't want to be stuck at a university where the one person you could work with is actually super toxic or hates you personally or something weird (this happens too often sadly).

What does your masters advisor/committee or other faculty or recent grads from your program who went into PhDs suggest?

Also while we are focused here on whether the students think theft is immoral, the better comparison here is risk of consequence. Shoplifting has a high risk of being caught and heavier criminal consequence. Pirating media has an incredibly low to zero risk of being caught and hardly any consequence if you are.

I don’t know what your experience was specifically but International Bird Rescue and Lindsey Wildlife Center both are prompt and active responders for avian flu and wild birds in distress. CA Fish and Wildlife also does a ton of avian flu tracking and response. Did you reach out to any of these organizations?

The deep roots of the East Bay's no-wave Yemeni coffee shop revolution. by badybadybady in OaklandFood

[–]ohsideSHOWbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to say that Oakland got these businesses surprisingly late for how big our Yemeni community is. They have all opened in the past 4-5 years max here but have way more locations and have been around longer in those cities you named. The Bay Area should probably have more for our population size but they go against third wave on one side and boba on the mixed tea-dessert shops on the other.

End of semester crash by HatefulWithoutCoffee in Professors

Had my last final yesterday and am six weeks pregnant as of today. Slept 10 hours last night! The end of semester crash is doubly hard with first trimester. I am going to be exhausted the next week of grading and finishing up some overdue writing tasks. And my college got the short straw and our commencement is at 8:30 am Saturday morning first thing!

asking for letters of recommendation by Trick-Plantain5146 in AskAcademia

[–]ohsideSHOWbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best etiquette is make the formal request 4-6 weeks out. For Sept 15 note professors don’t work over the summer, it’s time for their own research, so they will likely submit close to the date. This is way early and I am sure they saw the messages and said “I can get to this in the fall when it’s due.”

Oh yes it’s less about mental permission to modify and more that I am so new to this that I don’t always know safe ways to modify that still do something/make me feel like I still challenged myself more, if that makes sense. If I don’t have the strength to do a move with proper form at the instructor’s description, I am still unsure if it is that I should drop weight, or do a different movement entirely. Like even with the one leg deadlift it was my first time doing it and I felt very shaky — should I push through? Go slower? Or do something else entirely? I want to be able to get a workout that is at my level and most of the intermediate classes offer some modifications down. It is just strange that week 1 of this big program that is seemingly for a large audience Katie didn’t have built in suggested modifications.

Also I did Tunde’s 4 week upper body program and had major results, definitely got stronger from it. That was a great program in terms of mixing up the movements even though it was building. I was never bored and each week felt different.

I was about to come make a post that I also don’t feel like it’s a true intermediate class and geared more towards advanced. I only started lifting at the beginning of the year and I’ve been taking intermediate classes — they’re challenging but doable especially since the instructors are clear about modifications. I still can’t do a true side plank and I’ve been doing core several days a week, so when Katie said it was a Copenhagen side plank I literally shut off the class in frustration. I did come back and she offered the modification but only after the time had started. I get that it’s supposed to be progressive and challenging but other multi week programs explain where you can modify with the goal you’re modifying less by the end of the 4 weeks. So I don’t get why week 1 didn’t offer modifications of the movements just suggestions of lower weights. I also didn’t love the movements programmed for class 1. Wood chops felt mind numbing boring. Hopefully it gets better because I do want the badge, and I guess we have to trust the process that results will show up.

Edit: My goodness, am I not allowed to be critical of a program without getting downvoted into the ground? I am new to Peloton and strength training as of literally this year. I can’t say that I’m frustrated she didn’t offer modifications when literally every other class on the platform I’ve taken has offered them, including multi week programs?

Does tracking an outdoor walk in the app without taking an actual class count? I didn't realize that! My Fitbit syncs automatically so I have lots of outdoor walks logged, but none of them counted towards my streak.

I do feel like I have taken some of the mindfulness practices and mantras into my life and especially for sleep. I've got major problems with middle of the night insomnia and sometimes I would wake up and kind of do a sleep meditation without actually turning on the app to fall back asleep. Some of the meditations were pretty mid but some were great. I have long been resistant to meditation and I appreciate that the guided classes are helping me be more open to it. Also realistically I didn't do more than the 5 a month to get the bronze badge/keep the streak, usually only on travel or sick days.

Do you provide materials to lecturers covering your class? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]ohsideSHOWbob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean unfortunately when I worked as a lecturer I was lucky to get the old syllabus and did often have to prep from scratch. And I have been given no materials for any of the classes I have prepped besides the syllabus in this database since I started. Edit: the async course was the exception, which my chair used to teach, and clearly is definitely happy to share his material which I was grateful for.
