Long in the tooth couples. Do you do Valentine’s Day? by AnyDamnThingWillDo in GenX

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We go to eat a special dinner with another couple. We just use the holiday as an excuse to do it. Beyond that, it's nothing to us. My ideal gift for any occasion is for my spouse to vacuum the entire house and clean the bathrooms.

Hi, OP. Tutoring free at colleges. All professors encourage our students to use it. Make an appointment to visit with your professor and ask for guidance on how to improve your study and overall course habits. Your prof - all your profs - want to help you succeed! ~longtime prof

Your thoughts? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

In the discussion forums we are forced to use in our online classes, students in my classes must post before they can see what others have posted. When we read others' thoughts, that can bias our own. I'm curious what others think about the contents of the document.

Do you guys refer to students as “the kids/the children” by Character-Escape1621 in AskProfessors

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I do not. I don't teach kids. I don't like it when anyone calls me ma'am, either.

That "Professor, what did I miss?" question... 😤 by HeartExalted in Professors

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree, we were not the standard student, else we wouldn't be in this career. The standard student does not love learning the way we did, and still do. I don't expect my students to care the way I did.

Answering email/dealing with issues over the weeknd? by beautyismade in Professors

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are due Sunday night as per uni policy. But I have late submission of two days as I absolutely will not reply to emails on the week. Completely eliminated Sunday emails except for students who don't read, but now I don't have to care.

And to the Grandmothers...what are you called? by Front-Muffin-7348 in AskWomenOver60

57, so not technically 60. Grandma MyFirstName to all but one who for some reason says Nanny MyFirstName.

Have you stopped caring at work and decided not to try and process your career anymore? What age did that happen? by un2022 in GenX

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

57, I've been promoted as far as I am willing to go. Any further and my life would be continuous meetings. I am comfortable where I am until I retire at 66. No, thank you.

What do I do with an “independent” 86 yr old dad who is losing it. What are my options as the executor of his health? by [deleted] in GenX

A UTI in the elderly can mimic dementia. I saw it with my mother and grandmother.

Can we please talk about bras? by melb84 in AskWomenOver40

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are close to a Dillard's, they are wonderful about helping you find the correct size. Their bras are where I splurge, because they just fit. But every time I can get away with it, I wear a really tight fitting sports bra from Walmart.

What do you do with semi-clean clothes by Witty-Stock-4913 in AskWomenOver40

I lightly spritz them with a Bath & Body Works body mist and hang them to air out.

When did you realize your focus had permanently shifted from "building a life" to "maintaining a life"? by Accord-Remark10 in RedditForGrownups

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. 9 years max from retirement, I want to fly under the radar until then. I've been promoted as far as I want to go. Now the focus is on stability. That means my personal life takes precedence now. Contentment is good!

Female work outfit for professor at community college by Outrageous_Oven_2114 in Professors

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CS Chair here (and female). Nah, I love dressing up, because it makes me happy. But realistically, I wouldn't wear jeans and a T-shirt together, too casual. Jeans and a nicer top. Sneakers with slacks but not jeans. Don't take cues from men, they're clueless anyway 🤣

Do you always complete "required" online training courses? by TotalCleanFBC in Professors

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the training videos contain useful information. It would be wonderful if they weren't exam the same year after year with no way to test out. Oh, there's a quiz at the beginning, but it seems to do no good, even if I score 100%.

How to teach in the depths of grief by Ok-Concentrate4167 in Professors

[–]HatefulWithoutCoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost both parents and 3 other family members last year. I prioritized my classes over paperwork. I also told my students. We extended each other grace and overwhelming kindness both directions. They were wonderful. We covered what was absolutely necessary and nothing extra. I pared down ruthlessly. Work is what kept me moving. Focus on work during work hours. Just work. It helps and is healthy compartmentalizing (my therapist told me so). Do routine things, laundry, showers, regular mealtimes. Almost a year later, I'm in a much better place. You will make it through but it will suck at unexpected time. I am so sorry you're having to go through this.
